Sociological Journal and Observations 

 

Throughout the class students will be expected to apply concepts from the course to their lives based on the guiding questions below. The purpose of this exercise is to encourage students to examine the role of social stratification in their lives. Each student is required to complete eight (8) entries (1 pages each, typed).

 

Select three (3) questions from the following:

  1. What career have you      chosen? Consider how social class influenced this decision. 
  2. What career have you      chosen? Consider how gender influenced this decision. 
  3. What career have you      chosen? Consider how race influenced this decision. 
  4. Discuss how your career      choice is influenced by the intersection of your race, class, and gender. 
  5. Discuss the social class      of which you consider yourself a member. Why do you place yourself in this      class? How did you become a member of this social class?
  6. Have you observed any      incidents of racism? Describe what happened. Do you think others also      believed this incident to be an example of racism? Why or why not?
  7. Have you observed any      incidents of classism? Describe what happened. Do you think others also      believed this incident to be an example of classism? Why or why not?
  8. Have you observed any      incidents of sexism? Describe what happened. Do you think others also      believed this incident to be an example of sexism? Why or why not?
  9. Have you observed any incidents of      homophobia? Describe what happened. Do you think others also believed this      incident to be an example of homophobia? Why or why not?

Three (3) questions from the following

  1. Gather information from      the New York Times which      suggests evidence for or against the arguments presented by each      theorist. Discuss your conclusions.      
  2. Identify the jobs you or      your parents have had. Which theory      or theories best explain the levels of income you or your parents earned?
  3. What do you think causes      social inequality?
  4. Suppose you had to teach      someone to be a member of your social class. How would you do that? 
  5. Describe the socioeconomic      factors that enabled you to attend Saint Leo University.
