Surrealism was a Major Art Movement out of post-WWI Europe, in which realistic images are juxtaposed in an unexpected context. Many Independent Animation Artists applied this to experimental stop-motion work. Choose 1 film from the list below, and compare it to Tim Burton’s Nightmare before Christmas. Discuss the use of metaphorical imagery, and how this relates to the storytelling. Consider the kind of storytelling; is it poetic & sublime, stream of conscious & illogical, frightening & nightmarish, whimsical fantasy, etc. Explain how the visual elements such as lighting support this world: bright colors with even light, hard-edged rim light with dark cast shadows, soft & muted tones, etc. Other visual elements would include texture, character designs & shapes, and staging. Make 3 main points, and support with 2 or 3 examples from each film.
