Question #1: Read Chapter 12 – Decision Making, then discuss the following questions:

 

What are some of the biases that would underlie a police officerвЂTMs discretionary decision whether or not to make an arrest? What biases or beliefs do you possess that would impact your decision to make an arrest or to release the offender?

Design a process for determining, on a case-by-case, which juveniles should be diverted from court processing. Is this a predictive decision? What is being predicted? How should the decision process be structured? Who should make the decisions? What kinds of information should be used? How should it be presented? How would you evaluate the decisions?

 

Question #2: Read Chapter 13 – Organizational Effectiveness, then discuss the following questions:

 

Describe the goals of a local police department. How do official and operative goals compare? What variables would you suggest using to measure achievement of those goals? Is the meaning of variables clear?

Consider the effectiveness of a drug court using a variety of theoretical perspectives. Would you reach similar conclusions using a goal, strategic, constituency, and system resource model of effectiveness? Under what circumstances might the theories lead to different conclusions about the courtвЂTMs effectiveness?

Develop a plan for a multi-goal/multi-measure evaluation of a prisoner reentry program. What kinds of structure, process, and outcome variables would you measure? How would you use the evaluation procedure to provide information for the ongoing assessment and improvement of the program?

 

Question #3: Read Chapter 14 – Change and Innovation, then discuss the following questions:

 

A growing number of entry-level criminal justice practitioners have college degrees. Will the advanced education of these practitioners create greater or less resistance to change from within criminal justice organizations?

To what extent does the classic paramilitary structure of police and corrections organizations create a climate that is not conductive to change?

 

Question #4: Read Chapter 15 – Research in Criminal Justice Organizations, then discuss the following questions:

 

How do you think research has influenced the criminal justice system since the PresidentвЂTMs Commission in 1967? What examples can you give of research findings that have had a direct or indirect bearing on practice in the field?

Critique the major sources of data about crime in the United States. What are their strengths and weaknesses? How should they be used in research, and how should that research influence management and policy? What cautions would you suggest?
