Choose a social issue affecting the workplace and working environment, and develop a paper that thoroughly discusses the issue from both the workplace and societal viewpoints. Be sure to include the positive and negative aspects of the issue in relation to the workplace, society, and workers, especially the unique worker groups who may be most affected (e.g., women, immigrants, LGBTQ citizens, the working or middle classes, and racial, ethnic or cultural groups). Analyze how the issue could be positively supported using various social controls (e.g., laws, organizational policies/practices, training/education, government or corporate involvement, or social change) and recommend interventions in these areas. In addition, discuss the potential social or economic benefits which may result if your recommendations were implemented.

Choose one of the following social issues:

The role of women in leadership

Faith-based decision making in business (hiring and customers served)

The use of immigrant labor in California

Sexual harassment

Executive versus worker compensation disparity

The gender wage gap

Whistleblowing

The paper must be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly sources (three of which must be found in the University Library) other than the textbook to support your claims. Cite your sources in text and on the reference page.

Control theory originated with the goal of managing small, mechanical operations (such as the thermostat example in your lecture) but it has since been applied in broader contexts. For this assignment, select a service operation (a bank, hospital, auditing company, financial consulting, etc.) and apply control theory to a particular process within the business. Explain how the concepts found in control theory can be used to ensure the smooth operation of the process. In a bank, a process to which we could apply control theory could be managing the length of the lines. In financial consulting, control theory could be applied to maintaining the balance between risk and return.

For this assignment, begin by choosing and describing a specific process within a service operation. Describe what the goals would be (maintain risk levels, manage queue lengths, maintain medicine inventory, etc.) and then explain, using relevant vocabulary, how control theory can be used to keep the goals on target. Use research to both find details about your selected type of business and also to learn more about control theory concepts. Be specific in your description and give concrete examples of what must be done. To support your arguments, create two graphs: the first should depict the feedback loop in the operation and the second should show the stability of the operation (how the value of the objective will behave over time). The online lecture has examples for both of these graphs.

Read Mattel and Toy Safety, which is Case Eight in the Cases in Business and Society section at the end of the book. This case describes the 2007 Mattel toy recalls, which were in response to findings that several childrens toys were coated in lead-based paint.

Write an eight to ten page paper that addresses the following questions. Support your opinions with scholarly research.

  1. Do you believe that Mattel acted in a socially      responsible and ethical manner with regard to the safety of its toys? Why      or why not? What should or could Mattel have done differently, if      anything? Be sure to support your answer using your research findings.
  2. Who or what do you believe was responsible for the      fact that children were exposed to potentially dangerous toys? Why do you      think so? Be sure to support your answer using your research findings.
  3. What is the best way to ensure the safety of      childrens toys? In responding, please consider how the following groups      would answer this question: government regulators (in the U.S. and China);      consumer advocates, the toy industry, childrens product retailers; and      standard-setting organizations. What might explain the differences in      their point of view? Be sure to support your answer using your research      findings.
  4. What do you think is the best way for society to      protect children from harmful toys? Specifically, what are the appropriate      roles for various stakeholders in this process? Be sure to support your      answer using your research findings.
