To make a difference for others

To have the opportunity to learn and grow through education and experiences

Learning Transfer

We have established that organizations invest in learning to address business needs and opportunities. Learning objectives are, in effect, business objectives. In solid organizations usually there are systems in place to set, measure, monitor, and reward achievement of business objectives. We usually do not find those same systems in place for training and development.

Talk to any group of laymen or professionals about what s broken in the current learning and development process, and most will tell you its the lack of serious post – training follow – through (Zenger, Folkman, & Sherwin, 2005, p. 30).

D4 states high impact learning drives the transfer of learning back to the work of the enterprise. They do not leave it to chance or individual initiative. Instead, they put in place systems and processes to actively encourage and manage the transfer process. Learning transfer is the process of putting learning to work in a way that improves performance.

In the chapter on D4, we introduce the concept of learning scrap and the high cost of doing nothing to ensure learning transfer. The elements that define the transfer climate and determine the results that training ultimately delivers is fully explained. We review what it takes to improve performance and discuss breakthroughs in the management of the learning transfer process made possible by technology.

Take a minute and watch Josh Kaufman talk about how to learn anything and think about how this can help trainers make the learning transfer happen.

Assignment Instructions

The United States is in a period of major transition from an economy where mass production manufacturing industries constituted the core to a one in which industries based on information and knowledge form the core.  In addition to the shift from mass production to knowledge-based enterprises, both the workforce and consumer population has also changed significantly.   These changes have stimulated changes in employment laws and regulations as well as in management and human resource policies and practices.

Read:

  1. Muhl, C.J.  The Employment-at-will Doctrine:  Three Major Exceptions.
  2. Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination
  3. K. Reardon, “The Memo Every Woman Keeps in Her Desk. – The case study concerns a woman who believes that she and other women are being discriminated against in her company.

Forum:

  1. If Liz Ames at Vision Software sends the memo she has written to her boss and is subsequently terminated would any of the exceptions to the “employment at will” doctrine apply to her case?  Would she be protected under any federal law?  Explain your reasoning.
  2. Josie Zaroft, a 56 year-old senior software engineer at FutureApp, has informed the human resource department that in advance of scheduled gender reassignment surgery, she would like the staff to refer to her using only female pronouns.  The head of HR, Susan, once dated Josie when she was known as Joe, a biological male.  Susan calls Josie in for a performance review and states that Josie will not receive a previously-promised promotion because her transition will make it difficult to manage the team of older male tech workers who just wont understand this she-male fad. Susan further states that Josie must be crazy and is too old to be performing drag in the office.  Has Josie suffered from any discriminatory practice under federal law? Identify which federal laws prohibiting job discrimination might apply, and explain why.

Reply to this person’s respond in 3-4 sentences

  1.  This is a very hard case, we can look towards the likes of Charlie Rose, Matt Laur, and others for advice, of the laws versus the street rules. Legally Liz should not have been fired. She was using HR to express her opinions against sexism, but in reality, as seen with Rose and Laur, the stores were covered up and the people who raised the flags were fired. Liz says He’ll dismiss me as a radical feminist or a chronic complainer. The employer is always at a huge advantage, Liz could raise the flag, and then they could fire her for something else that could be totally fake, and it would be very hard to prove it otherwise.  Technically she is protected under federal law, but the company would most likely fire her for something else and it would be nearly impossible to prove that she was fired for her memo.
  2. Josie for sure is facing a discriminatory practice simply because the government says harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, genetic information, or age; are protected under the Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination Questions And Answers. It is very simple, they cannot legally not promote her due to gender or a surgery of any kind. It is not only wrong but illegal.

THEN REPLY TO THIS PERSON’S RESPOND (3-4 SENTENCES)

1. Firstly, the employment at will doctrine states that if an employee doesnt have a written employment contract and the term of employment is indefinite, the employer can terminate the employee for a good cause, bad cause, or no cause whatsoever. However, there are some exceptions to this doctrine. The public policy exception states that an employee has been wrongfully discharged when the termination is against an explicit, well-established public policy of the State. Next, the implied contract exception is applied when an implied contract is formed between an employer and employee, even though no express, written instrument regarding the employment relationship exists. Lastly, theres the covenant of good faith exception which means either that employer personnel decisions are subject to a just cause standard or that terminations made in bad faith or motivated by malice are prohibited. When looking at Liz Ames termination I believe that the public policy exception applies to her situation. It is now become commonplace to give women equal opportunity in the workplace and to respect them as equals. Her termination was clearly based on Clarks naiveness and unwillingness to accept the fact that theres discrimination in his company. By simply deciding to lay her off he is going against this policy or norm. Not only this but under the policies of Title VII, Liz is protected against discrimination or harassment based on her sex, something she had to endure while at Vision Software. And now it is only exasperated by Clarks retaliation to her complaint.

2. I feel that Josie is definitely suffering from discriminatory practice. Title VII can be applied here because Josie is being discriminated against on the basis of her sex. Just because someone doesnt identify with their biological gender, it doesnt mean that they are any less capable of completing the tasks at hand. And the older tech workers may not understand this sex change, but this is no reason to belittle Josie and take away an already promised promotion. Additionally, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act can be applied here. There is no set age for when someone can or cant perform drag. This is completely opinionated and wrong. Josie may be older but she should not be made to feel as though she is less than or that she cant have her own autonomy in the workplace.

Instructions

Review the processes of invention and innovation. Then, select a new product   that you have been introduced to in the past 12 months. You are encouraged to   research this new product using outside sources. You can use the same company   you have been researching, or pick a new one.

You are to create a PowerPoint presentation about future inventions this new   product could help to inspire and what innovations could be developed to   enhance  and improve this product. Analyze how these two areas could impact the   company.  Your PowerPoint presentation should include the following   elements:

  • Slide 1: Title page
  • Slide 2: Description of the new product
  • Slide 3: Description of the importance of R&D to include lead users        and market research
  • Slide 4: Discussion of appropriate structure and culture within the        company necessary to support innovative ideas and products
  • Slide 5: Exploration of future inventions inspired by the product or        analysis of future innovations of this product (Was this a successful        invention leading to innovation?)
  • Slide 6: Prediction of product demand in five years
  • Slide 7: List of sources using APA guidelines

Please ensure that every slide has a title at the top explaining what the   slide covers. To complete this assignment, a minimum of two reputable sources   must be used, cited, and referenced. Add citations in proper APA format, use   applicable pictures or graphics, use a slide template, and avoid wordy slides   by  focusing on bullet points. Remember, this is an academic   presentation.

Read the Casa De Paz Development Project case study found at the end of chapters 1 through 5, CPM 4e and answer the following questions in a paper formatted using a question-response format:

Question 1 (taken from Unit 3) If you were the project manager, what expertise would you like from the sponsor, stakeholders, or core team members to create a milestone schedule with acceptance criteria?  Minimum 250 words.

Question 2 (taken from Unit 5) – What would you want to see in a team charter (i.e., rules of engagement) for this development project?  Is this different (Agile environment) than other (Traditional Suburban Homes) environments?  If so, how is it different?   Minimum 250 words.

Question 3 (taken from Unit 5) – List types of decisions that would need to be made and the appropriate person, group, or method for each, for example, individual team member, the collective team, scrum master, and/or product owner.

You will be assessed on content and mechanics.

Content (30 points/question):  The content must be based on the case study materials and reading assignments.  The PMBOK 6e and CPM 4e, along with other reputable resources can be used to supplement the responses through summarizing, paraphrasing and quoting those sources.

Mechanics (10 points):  Each question response must be at at minimum 250 words.  “Minimum” is that amount typically needed to meet expectations (to earn a “B”).  To exceed expectations (to earn an “A”), a deeper discussion is needed. Each reference should be listed at the end of the paper following APA guidelines.  Online blogs are not acceptable references.  See Purdue OWL website for guidance on in-text citations.

Your Instructor will use Turn-it-in to ensure your paper is authentic work. To avoid plagiarism, see the course home page for more information and use the Purdue Online Writing Lab to learn how to paraphrase, summarize and cite the references you use in all academic writing assignments.
