Assignment Details

This is a 3-step project:

  1. Identify a change.
  2. Find 6 articles.
  3. Write an annotated bibliography for each article.

Please read the detailed instructions below carefully.

Step 1: Write 34 sentences answering the following questions:

  • Identify and describe a recent change that occurred in your workplace. It could be a change in the levels of staffing; a change in policy, such as time off or tuition reimbursement; a change in use of equipment or supplies; a change in charting or computerized medical records; and so on.
    • Describe the change in 3-4 sentences.
    • 1 of the sentences should address the rationale for the change.

Step 2: Begin researching scholarly articles from the library from the past 5 years that are related to the change issue identified in Step 1.

  • Complete a 6-column table of the references you found, including the following:
    • Author(s) last name, first initial.
    • (Year).
    • Title of article.
    • Title of Publication,
    • Volume #(Issue #),
    • Pages of the article.
  • A minimum of 6 scholarly references are needed to complete this assignment; you may find more.

EXAMPLE
Change Issue: Low Census Staffing Policy
Currently, when the patient census is low, staff go home based on tenure; the same staff are continually going home, resulting in a lower paycheck for these nurses. The proposed change is to rotate all staff to leave when the census is low, regardless of tenure, so the burden of potentially lower pay is shared among the entire staff and not the same few.

Author Last Name, First, Initial.(Year).Title of Article.Title of Publication,Volume #
(Issue #),Pages.

Step 3: This step requires the development of an annotated bibliography for each of the 6 articles listed in Step 2. This step should be 6 paragraphs total (1 for each article that is summarized and analyzed) and approximately 450700 words in 23 double-spaced pages.

Consider the following:

  • Summarize the main points for each of the 6 references (must be from within the last 5 years) from Step 2, each in its own paragraph.
  • Use the MEAL method of writing, where each paragraph contains a minimum of 4 sentences:
    • M = Main point
    • E = Example and/or Evidence (citation)
    • A = Analysisrefers to what was significant about the article and how the article was related to the change topic you selected.
      • Be sure to include at least 1 analysis sentence about each reference in that paragraph.
    • L = Link or transition to the main topic
  • Remember to cite each article appropriately (Author(s) Last Name, Year) and include an APA formatted reference page. (See APA 6th edition).

As you have explored this week, there are various methods a researcher may use to engage in quantitative research design. While the methods presented this week are not exhaustive, they do introduce numerous features that you will likely encounter when reviewing, accessing, and researching the nursing practice literature. Whether you are creating new research or searching the literature to add support for a research question you are interested in, understanding the quantitative research designs that may be used for nursing practice will likely inform how you will conduct research for your health care setting. As you continue to build upon your research skills as a nursing researcher and professional, understanding how to engage in quantitative research design is a valuable asset.

For this Assignment, view this weeks Quantitative Research Designs PowerPoint webinar and pay close attention to its content on the basic elements of research methods (e.g., sample, data collection, measurement, analysis). Then, be sure to review the research study by Sand-Jekline and Sherman (2014), included in this weeks resources.

Note: While not a required resource, you might find the definitions in the Encyclopedia of Nursing Research helpful for this assignment.

This assignment involves identifying and describing the strengths and weaknesses of the research method used in the Sand-Jecklin and Sherman (2014) research article in this weeks resources.

  • Focus on the research design, sample data collection methods, tools used for data collection, and the plan for data analysis as discussed in the Sand-Jecklin and Sherman (2014) article.
  • Identify at least two strengths and two weaknesses of the study based on reliability and validity by including additional support with citations from resources not assigned this week.
  • Use the copy of the Journal Club Template for Quantitative Research located in this weeks resources. The template includes an area for each element discussed in the study.
  • Be brief, paraphrase and summarize each of the elements clearly on the form.
  • Provide the full citation of the article used for this Assignment on the template.

Nature offers many examples of specialization and collaboration. Ant colonies and bee hives are but two examples of natures sophisticated organizations. Each thrives because their members specialize by tasks, divide labor, and collaborate to ensure food, safety, and general well-being of the colony or hive.

Of course, humans dont fare too badly in this regard either. And healthcare is a great example. As specialists in the collection, access, and application of data, nurse informaticists collaborate with specialists on a regular basis to ensure that appropriate data is available to make decisions and take actions to ensure the general well-being of patients.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your own observations of and/or experiences with informaticist collaboration. You will also propose strategies for how these collaborative experiences might be improved.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the evolution of nursing informatics from a science to a nursing specialty.
  • Consider your experiences with nurse Informaticists or technology specialists within your healthcare organization.

Post a description of experiences or observations about how nurse informaticists and/or data or technology specialists interact with other professionals within your healthcare organization. Suggest at least one strategy on how these interactions might be improved. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain the impact you believe the continued evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty and/or the continued emergence of new technologies might have on professional interactions.

Describe your acculturation experience as a new graduate to the culture of the nursing profession. How is it similar or different from the acculturation experience of a new nursing colleague who joined your team within the past year?

Submission Instructions:

  • Your initial post should be at least 500 words, formatted and cited in current APA style with support from at least 2 academic sources No later than 5 years old.

Your written assignment for this module should be a 1-2 page paper (not including title page and reference page) that describes the following:

  • What did you learn from this course that you did not already know?
  • How will you apply what you learned to your patient care?

You should include a minimum of 2 references. Include a title page, in-text citations, and a reference page in APA format.

The theoretical foundations of qualitative and quantitative methods are very different, but many researchers believe both methods should be used in the research study to increase validity and reliability. What advantages or disadvantages do you see in using both types of methods in a nursing study? Support your answer with current evidence-based literature.
