The social imagination is defined as the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society; the ability to see things socially and how they interact and influence each other. To have a sociological imagination, a person must be able to pull away from the situation and think from an alternative point of view (Crossman, 2015, para. 8).

Important Note: This Discussion must be completed by Day 5 of the first week of the course, or you risk being dropped from the course. This includes both your initial post and response post.

With practice, you can use your sociological imagination to better understand the circumstances of an unemployed person, a person of a different gender, a person from another country, or the CEO of a major corporation. Throughout this course you will use your sociological imagination to view situations from a variety of perspectives.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Read the three articles referenced above.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post a 1- to 2-paragraph response to the following prompts:

  • Describe a value or behavior that you think studying sociology might help you understand. You can choose a behavior you do not like (e.g., a teenager constantly looking at his or her cellphone) or a value you treasure (e.g., integrity in the workplace).
  • Explain why you chose the value or behavior.
  • How might you use your sociological imagination to better understand the value or behavior you chose?
  • Refer to 2 specific examples from the readings provided or other sources you find. Be sure to include information about each source, including title, author, year, and page number. If you refer to concepts from your Interactive Units, note the unit and element (lecture notes, video, etc.) to which you refer.

Read a selection of your colleagues postings.

Introduction
Over the eight weeks of the course,  you will work on a paper that addresses a current controversial issue.  This paper is to be in the form of an argument. You will select a topic,  choose an issue related to that topic, thoroughly research both sides  of the issue, and then write a paper that supports one side or the other  of the issue. Your paper must define the issue, present evidence on  both sides of the issue, and then argue that one side is stronger and  more persuasive than the other. Your paper must address at least three  relevant aspects of the issue. More specific directions for each part of  the paper will be found within the specific assignment in the weekly  modules.

Here is a brief breakdown of the project so that you can plan your time in the course:

Week

Task

Week 1

Week 3

Issue Review (both sides)

Week 5

  • Single-payer health care
  • Free college for everyone

  • Capital punishment
  • Universal basic income
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Care of the aging

If you want to propose a different topic, you must have the consent of your instructor.  When you choose a topic, think of specific issues under that topic that  you will explore. Click on the following link for an example:

For the assignment this week, address the following:

  • State the topic chosen from the list or topic approved by instructor.
  • State the specific issue you will explore.
    • This must be stated either as a question (“Should prostitution be  legalized?”) or a whether-or-not statement (“Whether prostitution should  be legalized”).
  • For the stated issue, state three (3) aspects of the issue that you  think you will likely develop in your paper. Briefly state why you have  chosen each aspect.
    • You are not confined to three aspects only, but you must develop at least three. As you develop your paper, you may find other aspects that you deem more relevant, and may add or substitute those.
      • Example: For the topic of prostitution, you might  examine the aspect of personal autonomy, public health aspects, and law  enforcement aspects, at a minimum.
      • Example: For the topic of free healthcare for  undocumented persons, you might address economic aspects, ethical  aspects, and public health aspects, at a minimum.

Consider the bureaucracies that you come in contact with (college, work, IRS, medical offices, or the Post Office).

For the written assignment this week, pick one bureaucracy with which you are familiar, and create a 750 (or more) word, APA style paper. In your paper describe the following:

How did you come in contact with the bureaucracy?

What shortcomings do you see in the bureaucracy? (Select and provide evidence of at least two shortcomings)

How would you resolve the shortcomings mentioned?

Do social group memberships give some individuals an advantage when navigating this bureaucracy?

1. Tell us how many you’ve seen on the list. Give me the number. ( )
2.  Tell us which films on the list you think should NOT be there and why!
3.  Tell us which films are MISSING from the list and why!
4.  Tell us which film YOU think should be #1 and why!
5.  Tell us what the criteria are that you used to make your decision about what films should be included (how do you judge a film’s worth?)

ocial change can require a large movement, or a small intervention, depending on the type of change you are trying to implement. This assignment helps you apply what you have learned this week to a situation in your community where social change may be necessary.

Review the  to enhance your presentation.

Create a 6- to 10-slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation on social change in your community.

Include the following:

  • Description of a social problem in your community
  • Examples include graffiti in parks, destruction of community property, property theft, parking violations, speeding, improper disposal of pet waste, and improper landscaping.
  • A theoretical perspective on social movements to apply to this problem
  • Include a description of how this perspective proposes to address this problem and create social change.
  • The possible social influences or agents for change to address the problem in your community

Include detailed speaker notes for each slide.

1.What global forces are affecting the U.S. economy and politics? How do those global forces affect your own life? Discuss.

2.In the once popular television show, Gene Simmons Family Jewels, did this show depict a typical American family? Why or why not? What is going on with the American family today? What historical events have played a role in shaping American family life? What do you see for the future of the U.S. family? How do religion and education impact the future of the U.S. family?

Probability and nonprobability are the two general categories of sampling. Probability sampling uses random selection, whereas nonprobability sampling does not. For example, if you wanted to study the effects of divorce on the psychological development of adolescents, you could gather a population of a certain number of adolescents whose parents were divorced. Then, out of that population, you could randomly select 25 of those people. If you wanted to use nonprobability sampling, you would choose specific people who had met predetermined criteria. For this Discussion, consider how samples would be chosen for both probability and nonprobability sampling structures.

Post your explanation of the following:

  • Using your research problem and the refined question you developed in Week 4, develop two sampling structures: probability and nonprobability.
  • Explain who would be included in each sample and how each sample would be selected.
  • Be specific about the sampling structures you chose, evaluating both strengths and limitations of each.

Sociological Investigation

The outcomes of Sociological research are literally around us every day. When we see an article telling us that more men are helping with housework in 2015 than in 1960 or that employers would rather hire a White man with a criminal record before they hire a more qualified Black man without one (both are real and recent studies) we are reading sociological research. To get you used to identify and thinking critically about these studies. Find current news of reports on a sociological study. It can be on any topic. Post it along with your response and, using the concepts in the chapter, identify:
1. The dependant and in dependant variables in the study
2. Questions you might have about the reliability or validity of the study.
3. What alternative reasons could you think of for the outcome of this study? (AKA Spurious Correlation)
Here is an example of an article you might use, this one gets pretty detailed, and its ok to find one that isnt as scientific as long as it provides enough information for your analysis.

Ethical Conflicts

A patient under the care of your agency committed suicide, and you are in charge of the adverse incident review of this case. Considering the stakeholders in your agency (clients, providers, management, third-party payers, etc.), what are the potential ethical conflicts that may arise from your role investigating this incident, and what would you do to appropriately discharge your ethical duties?

When you discuss the potential ethical conflicts, provide evidence from the scholarly articles you read for this week and/or reference specific, relevant ethical standards from the from the National Organization for Human Services.

When responding to your peers original postings, review the conflicts they selected and elaborate upon them by commenting on their approach and/or making suggestions.

Please provide an initial substantive answer between 400 words in length.
