Refine and pose a reasonably complex problem definition along with a set of objectives (elements that you want to exist in your solution). Do not go beyond the objectives stage.
Remember: SMART Objectives are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-scaled. They are not alternatives and they are not action steps. This can be tricky, so think carefully and evaluate your list!
Provide your view and just enough background detail to allow the reader to understand the problem and objectives. Be sure to complete a root cause analysis of the problem as outlined in Smart Choices.
The length should be between 550 and 800 words (excluding the title page and references). Assignments under 550 and over 800 words will attract penalties.
Formal writing is required using APA.
Copied input, quotations, and paraphrasing require citations and references conforming to APA 6th edition standards to avoid the dire consequences of plagiarism and cheating.

Prepare a problem statement
The Problem Statement introduces a reader to a real situation that is not ideal. When writing a problem statement, you are describing a situation you want to improve. A problem can be your perception that something is good, but could be better. A problem can also be your perception that something is outrageously bad and needs to change.
Answer the following:
- What are the people in the situation doing wrong? What are the 5 WHYs?
- What are the key essential issues and root causes to their dilemma?
- What is the result or significant impact on the company or customer in the situation?
- What domino effect does it start? What will be the future impact of this course of action if continued to be followed?
- Who/What are the key contributors that instigate the negative situation?
- Who/How are others reacting to the situation and does this create a pendulum effect to this situation?
