Description
To complete this assignment, it is expected that you will use elements of ethnographic research to explain how the members of this community approached their rhetorical task. Your ethnographic research will help you better understand the discourse community, in which these authors are composing, and will help you understand how these writers are approaching their rhetorical task (s). In order for this assignment to be successful, I would suggest that you work with a discourse community that you are already familiar with or one that you have easy access to. Your case study should work to discuss the connections between the choices these writers made with the expectations and habits of the broader discourse community.
When you are working on this project, use the following questions to guide your research and your writing:
- Who is doing the communicating in this community? That is, who are the authors that are writing?
- What kinds of texts (Genres) are they using to achieve their rhetorical goals?
- How do they go about composing those texts?
- When you complete this kind of work or similar work, how would you explain it to people outside of that community?
Your goal for this project will be to write a “case study” of your time observing and interacting with people in a particular discourse community. We will discuss the case study genre more specifically as we continue to work on this project.
