The energy sector is not only challenged by the transition from the fossil fuel and nuclear energy age to the solar and efficient energy age, but also by the ongoing digital transformation. Decentralized energy production e.g. with PV-systems enable the consumer to take an active role within the energy value chain (“prosumer”). Due to the unpredictability of the increasing renewable energy production and to balance the load on the grid, more focus is put on the demand side management of private households. On the other side new information technology concepts such as smart grid, smart metering and smart home are going to change, the way energy providers create their business value.

The journal can focus on business model transformation of (traditional) energy provider or smart energy start-ups – new business models:

a. Market analysis of (new) business models of energy providers or smart energy start ups

b. Analysis of relevant technology enabler and their impact on existing business models and their potential for new business model developments

c. Development of possible new business models for smart energy

d. The business models can be structured with the business model canvas by Osterwalder and Pigneur.
