question

For the three primary causes of voluntary turnover (desirability of leaving, ease of leaving, alternatives), might their relative importance depend on the type of employee or type of job? Explain.

Student response

Voluntary turnover can be very high in certain organizations. Organizations should plan to try and reduce the amount of voluntary turnover that they have. The three main reasons for voluntary turnover are desirability of leaving, ease of leaving, and alternatives. In a part time position, there may be higher turnover because employees are just job hopping due to the ease of leaving and they don’t like the way that organization is ran. When it comes to full time employment, there may be a type of turnover because they find somewhere else with more money or better working perks. The type of business has a huge impact on turnover. More blue collar jobs have higher turnover as they think the next one will be better, where more white collar jobs have less turnover because they are more confined to one area. More white collar employees leave due to more money or a better working environment.
