ln Assessment Item 4 (Essay) it is mandatory to include at least two scholarly articles. By completing a preliminary search this week you
will be better prepared forthe essay and can ask questions ofthe lecturer before it’s too late.
Step 1: Complete Library Database
Tutorial – this was completed last week but you may need to review it.
Step 2: Read the article on How to Find Good Scholarly Articles.
Step 3: Select two relevant academic journal articles for your chosen essay topic in Assessment Item 4 (Essay). Record the names ofthe
articles in your blog using correct referencing according to the APA referencing guide. If your blog tool does not allow forthe right
formatting just let the marker knowthis (e.g. ‘the journal title should have been in italics’)
Step 4: Briefly describe your search
process, e.g. how long it took, how many searches, what search words you used.
Step 5: As you reviewthe many articles listed ask yourself
the following questions:
Is it scholarly? How do you knowthis?
Will it help me put together a great essay? HINT
Is it easy to access?
Use the search method that works best for you. Here are the three most common:

SAMPLE ANSWER
NB: This is a real student response and so
does not necessarily represent the ‘correct’ and only way of completing this task. For example, the referencing is incorrect. The student
does however demonstrate that he/she has fully engaged with this task, developed some valuable research skills and is better prepared for
the essay assessment. This is what we would like to see in yourwork.
Stansbury, J. 8. Barry, B. (2007). Ethics Programs and The Paradox
of Control. Business Ethics Quarterly 17(2), 239-251. Retrieved from:

Because I chose the Ethics topic for my essay, it was imperative to me that l find credible and substantial information regarding ethical
models, so I decided that this would be my personal focus forthis task.
First I researched some recent contributors to Ethical Practice,
as well as performing a broad search on Ethics through EBSCO(Business) and checking the referencing of papers for regularly cited authors.
Afterjust under an hour, I had settled on Jason Stansbury as a highly credible source, and set my EBSCO(Business) search to “Author” and
seconds later I was presented with several articles, with the stand-out being the choice I made.
lfound the article to hold a large
amount ofinformation regarding my topic of choice and will be of great advantage to me in writing my essay.
Although there is no doi
available, the article is easy enough to find – it is the third result when using the EBSCO(Business) search for “Jason Stanbury, under
Author”.
My next goal was to find another credible article, with as much if not more information regarding ethical models.
I decided to
expand my search to anothe database and settled upon Emerald Management Xtra Complete (EMX Complete) – a database I have found quite useful
so far for another course.
I decided not to really use Google Scholar (though I did run a sample search, just to experience it) as the
Library tutorial described it as a lessertool and I am willing to put in the extra time to search databases individually.
In fact using
Emerald to find appropriate data couldn‘t have been easier! I opened an “Advanced Search”, searched Journals for “ethical model”, selected
dates 2006 – 2012 and the first result was the article that I chose.
The article provides a plethora of useful information to be used for
my essay and altough finding the article was easy, that does not refiect the quality ofthe information – it will be a great asset.
As for
the Authors, I perfromed a search on each ofthem and they have published 6,7 and 3 peer-reviewed articles respectively, and the article
itselfis referenced many times and downloaded over2700 times fom the Emerald site.
