Legion Killer Video Reflection Paper (20 points)

HUNT_FOR_THE_LEGION_KILLER

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 8,000 to 18,000 individuals in the U.S. each year are hospitalized with Legionnaire’s disease, a type of
pneumonia with a fatality rate between 5-30%. Your assignment is to write a reflection paper to the “Hunt for the Legion Killer” video to be shown in class about the
outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease that occurred in Philadelphia in 1976.

After watching the video, write a paper, using the following guidelines to reflect upon ONE aspect of the video that you found interesting or compelling.
1.(3 pts) Briefly introduce your topic and summarize the portion(s) of the video that you wish to reflect upon (do not attempt to summarize the entire video).
2.(7 pts) Reflect upon ONE aspect of the video that interested you. Below is a list of a few questions to consider if you are not sure what you would like to reflect
upon. Be sure to chose only one aspect to reflect upon, explain your reasoning (do not simply state what you think but also WHY), and use specific examples from the
video or other sources to support your ideas. New paragraphs should have topic sentences that refer to your introduction/thesis statement(s). Also, consider using the
“claim, support, warrant” method of explaining your reasoning.

Example:

Claim: I like to go to school

Support: Because my friends are there

Warrant (explains the support): My friends make me laugh.
3.(4 pts) Clearly state your conclusion(s) and the reasoning behind your conclusion(s).
4.(2 pt) Your paper must be at least 1 page and no more than 2 pages with 1-inch margins, double-spaced, and 12-point font (name, date, title, etc. not included in
length).
5.(2pts) This is a formal writing assignment. Minimal typos, no “texting” speak, complete sentences, non-conversational writing style, appropriate punctuation, and
proper grammar are expected.

If you’re not sure how to get started or what to discuss, here are a few questions you may want to consider:
•What did you think about the work that was done by the CDC’s epidemic investigators and other scientists related to the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak? What is your
overall impression of the effort it takes to investigate such an outbreak? How do you think it impacts how well we manage disease? Was there any part of the
investigation you found particularly interesting or surprising?
•What did you think about the reactions and responses of the general public and members of Congress to the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak? Did you find any of these
reactions and responses surprising? What do you think led them to respond in they way they did? Compare their response to how people have responded to other diseases
of the past or in modern times. For example you may compare and contrast the responses depicted in “The Plague” video to those depicted in the “Hunt for the Legion
Killer” video. What was similar and what was different about these two disease outbreaks? How did the era in which each outbreak occurred influence the people’s
reactions to the outbreaks?
•After the first few days of the outbreak, it was determined that Legionnaires’ disease was not being transmitted directly or indirectly person-to-person. If
Legionnaires’ disease had begun spreading person-to-person from those initially infected to their families and communities and then across the country, do you think
that the reactions and responses of the public would have been different? How do you think the mode of transmission affects our response to disease?
