Summarize
We all face ethical dilemmas in our professional lives. Sometimes the issue can be something seemingly small, like a co-worker who regularly takes office supplies home for personal use. At other times it can be a big issue like a conflict between regulations and the rights of an individual to services. For this discussion:
Summarize an ethical dilemma you have encountered. Include enough detail so that your peers can understand the depth of the issue.
Describe your role in this issue and how you handled it.
Relate how a code of ethics might have helped or did help in resolving this.
Tell us about the outcome.
Finally, describe what you would do differently today.
Discussion 2
You have examined the code of ethics for ASPA, a national professional association representing the field of public administration. You have as comparison another code of ethics that you located, and the reading from Frederickson. Based on what you understand about the field, write a personal code of ethics for your professional position in public administration. You will examine this again in Unit 10.
Week 2
Ethics, morality, and values are often used interchangeably, yet the terms have very different meanings. Using the text and at least three other peer-reviewed sources, define the three terms, and provide examples from the work environment of a public administrator. Argue which term is most important when considering the provision of public services and the individual public administrator’s role in that work.
Some have argued that our treatment of the environment is a violation of ethics on a number of levels: taking from others the right to clean air and water, reducing our resources; and causing permanent damage that cannot be repaired. Using ethics, morality, and values as your guide, make your own case for or against this viewpoint. Use science and its interpretation to help argue your point, and describe the ethics of its inclusion as well.
