This is the third (of five) Critical Thinking Posts for the course. It must be posted on Canvas by 8pm on Friday, January 10th, 2020.

Remember, this is an opportunity for you to take a position on a media and culture issue using your informed opinion by the theory and concepts you are learning about in this course.

Your answer must be a balance between what you think with what you have read, watched, listened to (provided by Dr. Dorsey-Elson), heard stated during a relevant mini-lecture AND/OR information you attained from a credible source (which you must state so that Dr. Dorsey-Elson can verify its validity).

Your critical thinking writing post is completed correctly when you respond directly to the questions that Dr. Dorsey-Elson posts and you use complete sentences that are proofread for grammatical errors. Late critical thought posts will NOT be graded.

Please write a 12 to 15 sentence response to the following multi-part question:

What are your current online music listening habits? Do you use platforms like Spotify, Soundcloud, or Pandora? How often do you use these types of sites for music? Are they changing your music taste? Introducing you to new genres? New cultures?

In a minimum 250 words, write a paragraph that answers the following questions:

What does the word “literacy” mean to you?

How does Gee define discourse?

What is a discourse “identity kit”?

Why does Gee believe that discourses are “inherently ideological”?

Do you agree with him? Disagree? Both? Why? (Use examples and explain)

Proposal for Social Change Assignment    (See Calendar for Draft Due Dates)

Writing for Social Change is based on the longstanding tradition in Western culture of using

literature as a tool for social critique, as a means of calling for social change and justice, and as a

tool for social transformation (hecua.org). We have already read examples of calls for large

scale change (The Declaration of Independence).

The goal of this research-based persuasive proposal is to help you identify one specific, concrete

area of personal interest (and narrow a topic), develop your skills as a writer and encourage you

to share your voice and participate in a democratic society by examining the role of literature and

literary production in creating social transformation.

Objective: Write a 4-5 page proposal for social change using MLA documentation.

Narrow the topic (propose a specific change in your neighborhood, community, school and/or

workplace). Be specific in your problem statement (thesis). Write as much as you can from your

own knowledge and experience. Then, use research to support your ideas. Include a personal

interview and a local news article.  You will need to paraphrase from outside sources which

support your own ideas. Quote any exact phrases or sentences you utilize in your paper. Make

sure to add in-text citations after any ideas you have brought into your paper from outside

sources. Read the section on plagiarism in the syllabus. This will emphasize the importance of

documenting information.

Format:  Fit your proposal in this outline, so you can visually see how the components fit

together and help you trim your paper. Break your paper into the following sections:

Background

Problem Statement (thesis)

What is Being Done

What Needs to Be Done

Implications for the Future

Mental health professionals are a diverse group and range greatly in their scope and depth of practice. In terms of doctorly prepared practitioners you will often find yourself working with psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, and neuropsychologists. Using websites such as , explore these careers and what roles these professionals play. Then consider the three cases below and imagine you are the case worker for each instance. Your job is to refer the patient to one (and only one) of the professionals (i.e., psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, or neuropsychologist) who is the best choice to evaluate and manage the case.

  • Case 1 (Gary). Gary is a 23-year-old male who just last year enrolled in community college and who came to the attention of his professors when his grades started to drop. When asked what was going on he stated that there were people watching him all the time making it hard for him to sleep and therefore to study.
  • Case 2 (Connie). Connie is a 40-year-old mother of three and has been employed at a local warehouse for the last many years. She is well liked and gets great job performance reviews. Recently she has shown instances of being late, her work has declined, and she has been seen crying when off alone. She states she is upset over her children leaving for college and her husband not giving her much attention.
  • Case 3 (James). James is a 30-year-old semipro ball player. He was, until recently, moving up in his career and was getting a lot of attention from scouts. However, just in the last few weeks his pitching started to suffer, he became irritable over nearly everything, and was just found slumped over the steering wheel of his car that had rolled into another parking space. He was uninjured but seemed very confused.

In your initial post,

  • Determine which one (and only one) of the professionals (i.e., psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, or neuropsychologist) is the best choice to evaluate and manage each case.
    • Who do you pick?
    • Why?
    • Why not one of the other practitioners?

Concerning issues in mental health, select one or more items below and, using your own words, discuss with the class:

  • What is the importance of prevention in mental health care?
  •  What is the status and contemporary issues of inpatient mental health treatment?
  •  What are the controversial legal issues involving the mentally ill?
  •  What national and international organizations promote efforts for mental health?
  •  What are the challenges for the future of abnormal psychology?

Communication is used to inform, to persuade and to analyze. In this assignment, you will persuade the reader of your point of view by supporting a thesis with objective facts and credible evidence.

In the week 2 forum, you selected your topic for this paper. You will take a stance on this issue and support your stance with credible evidence in your body paragraphs.

For this assignment, you have traditional and creative options. Choose what will challenge your writing and what would be appropriate for your topic and field:

  • Traditional 5 paragraph essay with 1 paragraph introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and 1 paragraph conclusion.
  • Op-ed newspaper article.
  • Blog post.
  • Letter/proposal to stakeholders.
  • Press release.
  • Letter to the editor.
  • Presidential address.
  • Election speech (written only).
  • Application for a position related to the topic.
  • Defense attorneys opening statement.
  • Case brief.
  • Advocacy statement.
  • Call to action paper.

Guidelines:

In order to persuade the audience to accept the position you are advocating in this paper, you will use different kinds of appeals:

  • ethos (which involves the credibility of the speaker, writer, or authority being cited);
  • logos (which involves facts, statistics, and logic); and
  • pathos (which involves emotions).

A good persuasive argument uses credible sources, objective evidence, and emotional hooks to make use of logos, ethos, and pathos respectively.

Be sure your thesis statement is very clear.  It should be a single complete sentence, including both a subject and a predicate, that combine to make claim. Example: The USA should be more competitive in establishing a presence on Mars.

Your introduction paragraph should include a hook to grab the reader’s attention.  The thesis statement is typically seen in the first paragraph. Your body paragraphs will support the thesis. You should use credible sources and cite them according to the style of your discipline. Your conclusion should reiterate the strongest points from your paper and give the audience something to consider, moving forward.

Requirements:

  • PURPOSE:   To persuade
  • AUDIENCE:   The applicable audience for the type of document you’ve chosen to write.
  • LENGTH:   500 – 750 words (Times New Roman font)
  • SOURCES:   A minimum of 3 with at least 1 from the library, and at least 1 from a professional journal or organization
  • FORMAT:   The citation style that is appropriate for your discipline
  • DUE:   SUNDAY 11:55 pm EST of Week 5
