Writing Counterargument and Rebuttal Paragraphs

Forum Objective: Learn how to write a counterargument/rebuttal paragraph for analysis paper. Learn to analyze both sides of an issue.

You will be submitting a problem analysis paper.  Your in-depth analysis may involve your looking at your position on an issue, but also at the opposing position, the view that is the opposite of yours.  This week you will practice looking at the opposing view, recognizing its strengths, and pointing out its weaknesses. One result of this process is that you will most likely feel more confident about your stance, as you have thought about and prepared responses to objections that you might face.

For this forum, start by reading , which is linked here.

Initial Post

Considering the principles explored in this article, as well as lesson materials previously covered, write two (2) paragraphs for the paper you just finished  “The Benefits of Traveling to Education”.

First, post your thesis statement (a single sentence that is not a question) in bold; then post your counterargument paragraph and rebuttal paragraph for your persuasion paper that you just finished.

  1. One paragraph will be the antithetical paragraph, offering a view that opposes yours. This is your counterargument paragraph. Ease your reader into the paragraph. Maintain your identity as the writer who supports your stance. You might start your counterargument something like this, There are some who feel this view on ________ is flawed. They say that _________ “
  2. The second paragraph will be the reinforcement of your thesis, addressing the objections identified in the counterargument paragraph.  This is your rebuttal. Make the transition from counterargument to rebuttal a smooth one. You can use wording like this to get into your rebuttal: While some objections have been made regarding _________, the case for _________ is still a strong one.

Sample Initial Student Post

Thesis: Food from McDonalds is good for ones health because McDonalds serves fish sandwiches, chicken sandwiches and nutritious salads.

Counterargument paragraph (state what the other side thinks)

McDonalds serves unhealthy food because McDonalds’ main sales are high calorie drinks, fatty hamburgers, and oily French fries. Only a small minority of total McDonalds’ sales are healthy, such as salads and fish sandwiches. In addition, McDonald’s hamburgers are 1,000 calories per serving.

Rebuttal paragraph (refute the counterargument)

It may be true that McDonalds sells unhealthy hamburgers; however, McDonalds’ salads contain lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, and other healthy ingredients. Leafy green vegetables have antioxidants that help fight inflammation, heart disease, and cancer. Eating McDonalds’ salads is good for one’s health….

Note: There is an excellent guide called Human Capital: A Guide for Assessing Strategic Training and Development Efforts in the Federal Government published by the United States General Accounting Office. Although this relates to the government and not the private sector, it contains excellent information that can be applied anywhere.

Milestones: Project PhasesIn Detail

Part 1: Select an Organization to Be Studied

There are a number of ways in which an organization can be selected. One option is to look outside your organization for companies that would be interested in participating in the project. Another is to volunteer your own organization, or if you are not currently employed, use a church, school, club, or other organization.

Once your organization has been selected, you will need to learn a great deal about it. It is essential for you to understand the organization’s business, goals, objectives, and mission in to complete this project successfully.

Submit the required information on your selected organization as a Week One assignment.  This week one assignment is worth 80-points.  Please note that you will also be submitting a written report for this project in Week 5.  The Week 5 Paper assignment is worth 100-points.

Part 2: Conduct a Needs Assessment

Training and development processes begin with a needs assessment. Given the economic pressures that businesses face today, it is imperative that those needs be connected to specific organizational performance issues. There are three different forms of analysis you will need to complete.

  1. Organizational analysis involves determining the appropriateness of training given the organization’s business strategy, its resources available for training, and support by managers and peers for training activities.
  2. Person analysis involves (1) determining whether performance deficiencies result from a lack of knowledge, skill, or ability (a training issue) or from a motivational or work-design problem; (2) identifying who needs training; and (3) determining employees readiness for training.
  3. Task analysis identifies the important tasks and knowledge, skill, and behaviors that need to be emphasized in training for employees to complete their tasks.

Hints for a Successful Needs Assessment

As you conduct your needs assessment, you may want to consider four potential sources of information that may help you in your analysis. Information such as employee turnover analysis, incident reports, long-range production goals, employee satisfaction studies, and physical plant layout can tell us a lot. Examples of other documents you may wish to consider include the following.

  • Business documents: Key business documents can be used to determine areas of poor performance and developmental needs. Such documents may include
    1. unit productivity reports;
    2. customer satisfaction ;
    3. communication reports; and
    4. competitive analysis reports.
  1. Are human rights individual rights, or do they also include group rights?
  2. The Ralph Bunche website provides an intriguing question: Are we, citizens of the United States, doing a good job of upholding the rights listed in The Declaration of Universal Rights?  Why or why not:?
  3. In her article entitled Anthropologists, Cultural Relativism, and Universal Rights, Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban states that:

“Cultural relativism, long a key concept in anthropology, asserts that since each culture has its own values and practices, anthropologists (and outside viewers of a society) should not make value judgments about cultural differences. As a result, anthropological pedagogy has stressed that the study of customs and norms should be value-free, and that the appropriate role of the anthropologist is that of observer and recorder.”

Some think that Anthropologists should not just observe culture but take a stand on key human-rights issues.  Do you agree?

This assignment is very important

A Life review is a naturally occurring, universal process consisting of reminiscence, thinking about oneself, and a reconsideration of previous life experiences and their meaning. You will be doing a Life Review on an older adult (65 years or older), by interviewing them. This Life Review assignment can be done with a family member, a loved one, a friend etc. DO NOT ASK SOMEONE YOU DO NOT TRUST, I DO NOT WANT YOU UNCOMFORTABLE OR IN A COMPRIMISING SITUATION. Ultimately, I would love for you to interview someone you have a connection with and someone you would like to know more about (as long as they are 62+).

The Final Life Review Paper should be 6-9 pages long (do not exceed 9 pages) and are due on the dates stated above. These submissions must be typed in Times New Roman, size 12 font, double spaced, and in APA (6th ed.) format with in-text citations and include a Title Page, Abstract, and Reference Page (Title, Abstract and Reference pages are not included in total page count). I will accept late papers; however, you will be penalized 7 points for each day it is late (unless you have an excused absence and provide documentation of the situation (such as doctors note, family issue, jury duty etc.), in which case, keep me in the loop.

This is the final submission of this paper and must include The Interview (including the setting portion of your proposal), Theory Application, and Reflection. The Interview (4-6 pages): Please include the highlights from the setting portion of your Proposal with this portion of the paper, as you are telling the story of the life of an older adult, you want to give the reader a good amount of detail of their background. This section is written in paragraph format in descriptive writing form (example is provided on page below, along with recommendations for the interview). Application of Theory (1-2 pages): This portion allows you to coin learned course material to your interview. In this section, incorporate what you learned in class, into this interview. Please state and define the theoretical approach(s) you are using to analyze the interviewee. It is a good idea to describe the older adults wellness and capabilities at the time of interview. Show your understanding of course concepts in your application to the interviewee. Three citations necessary (any material presented in this course can be used), dont forget: whenever you cite a source you need to give the appropriate APA reference. Reflection (1 page): Reflect on what you learned from this assignment. Address elements not only learned from the older adult, but also the interview processes and application of course concepts. Moreover, state what you learned from this writing process. Describe what you would have done different through this process and explain why. Also, briefly describe your own personal reactions associated with ones own aging process.

Possible Theories of Aging to use for your paper, please refer to your text and outside sources for more theories and or detailed information on these theories (pick at least 1):

For this assignment, you are required to read the Global Health article found under the Content section of Beachboard. This reflection asks you to discuss the phenomenon of Population Aging and the many implications that go along with this phenomenon such as economic, health care quality, and social systems.

According to Arthur Guarino, assistant professor in the Finance and Economics Department at Rutgers University Business School,

Nations will have to make changes or face slower economic growth and increased social costs to deal with aging populations. Guarino discusses this phenomenon as a deeply troubling issue for economists and policymakers, this phenomenon is known as the Population Aging Phenomenon. The Population Aging Phenomenon is a major concern since it has numerous global economic and financial implications impacting economic growth, health care costs, and social support systems. According to the Global Risks Insights Website: The United Nations projected that by the year 2100 the worlds population will become 11.2 billion and from that 3.2 billion will be at least 60 years old. Even before that occurs, the Second World Assembly on Aging stated that individuals over 60 years old are beginning to outnumber children under the age of 15, however, developed nations

attained this distinction in 1998 (Guarino, 2017).

Improvements in healthcare and fighting infectious diseases such as polio, malaria, and HIV mean people are living much longer. Furthermore, families are shrinking in size as women, on average, will bear 2 children by 2100 rather than the present 2.5 children. Combine this with an increase in more people over age 60, then the aging population will only increase over time. The economic implications of an aging global population have many dimensions that developed and developing nations are trying desperately to confront.

Please research, discuss and brainstorm the many implications of the Population Aging Phenomenon. Such implications can include (but are not limited to) economic, social, psycho-social, healthcare, environmental, education, demographic etc. What does it mean to have a global aging crisis? What are the advantages and disadvantages of an aging nation/ globe? What is most alarming, in your opinion, about the Population Aging Phenomenon? Moreover, this paper also asks you to look at a nation experiencing this phenomenon (any nation of your choice, you can choose the USA if you like) and discuss how this nation is handling their aging population. What are the implications this nation is dealing with, in regard to, an aging population, and how are they handling them? Lastly, spend thought on how we can improve and or eliminate the issues associated with the Population Aging Phenomenon. Write creatively and honestly in explaining your ideas and what the future can look like when your solutions are implemented. This reflection must be at least 750 words and cite at least 2 sources APA format.
