TWO OPTIONS THIS WEEK.  You have the option of completing the usual and boring Weekly Writing Assignment that includes the 3 questions OR you can write a “THANK YOU” letter to someone who has played a vital role in your education.  If you choose to write the THANK YOU letter, it can be addressed to a parent, friend, sibling, mentor, teacher – just someone who has played an important role.  Whether you choose to send the letter or not, is up to you .  Just make sure to submit it for a grade.  The idea is to reflect on your educational journey and take the time to say thank you.  Due by Sunday, March 8th no later than 11:59 p.m.

Discussion 2: Evidence Based Practice

Competent social workers have many types of skills to complement a wide variety of theoretical knowledge. This skill set and knowledge base is often informed by research. Whether research is quantitative, qualitative, or a mixture of both, the information that well-formed studies yield contribute to the knowledge base of the social work profession as a whole.

For this Discussion, consider how evidence-based research informs social work practice. Think about how research findings translate into social work actions.

By Day 4

Post your explanation of how research informs a social workers application of the steps in the process of evidence-based practice. Be sure to explain how research contributes to what a social worker may do in practice. Please use the Resources to support your answers.

Chapter 14: What formats and aids are most used by group therapists?

Papers are graded on the depth and quality of your thinking about the issues, the insight expressed in your observations of self and group processes, and the degree to which you are able to integrate theory from the readings with your observations. APA format is required for all academic writings.

Answer the following discussion questions: 400 Words each 

1) Beginning with the 2000 U.S. Census, respondents could choose to identify themselves as members of more than one race. When certain people identity as multiracial, why does society not see them as such? Past U.S. president Obama had a white mother and a black father, but he is often called the nation’s first black president, while George Zimmerman (shooter of Trayvon Martin, 2012) has a white father and a Hispanic mother and has been variously described as white, Hispanic, or multiracial in the media. How does society decide whether persons of mixed-race parentage are white, people of color, or both, and is the logic consistent? what factors seem to affect these choices?

2) Analyze the complex interplay among public opinion, data on the causes of a social problem, and the creation of public policy about immigration. Why have politicians been successful at using the “immigrants cause crime” argument to garner support for recent changes in the law even when evidence suggest otherwise? Are average voters fact-checking their politicians? Is this even easy to do? What social changes might facilitate this process?

3) What are some common media messages about racial/ethnic minorities, such as African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans, and how might internalized racism based on such stereotypes play out specifically for these groups in real life?

Write a 175- to 265-word response to the following:

• Is it immoral or insensitive to set evidence-based medical practice over other cultural medical beliefs?
• Fadiman compares the Hmong to a visual perception puzzle (p.237). Do you agree or disagree with her metaphor? Explain your reasoning.

 Requesting assistance on completing a research based written assignment. This paper should be between 4-6 pages. This paper will pose a very specific sociological research question about families and analyze the available research evidence to develop an answer to that question.  When you submit your topics, it must be in the form of a question (i.e. what is the relationship between social class and divorce rates?) All papers will be written in APA format, as can be found on the course information page and include at least 3 references (including 2 scholarly articles).

 

For this assignment, imagine you have been hired as the new Diversity & Inclusion Specialist in the Human Resources (HR) department of your current company or another company of your choosing. One of the first tasks you are given is to create a Diversity Proposal for your manager in response to an anonymous complaint (below) that was recently submitted to the HR suggestion box:

Complaint: I have been working here for 4 years. I am tired of watching the same Diversity in the Workplace 20-minute training video each January in order to satisfy the companys annual diversity training requirement. Nothing around here shows that this company values diversity. As one of a few people of color at this company, I feel like Im just here to increase diversity numbers so that the company looks good on paper. When are we going to actually do something to recognize all types of diversity? There are more aspects to diversity, besides race, that make individuals unique.   

Create a 500- to 800-word Diversity Proposal that addresses the following questions:

• 1.What is the business case or proposition for recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion?
• 2.How can we create a company mission and company goals to outwardly express and reinforce our commitment to diversity and inclusion? What might our mission statement say to express our commitment?
• 3.What are at least two short-term actions (less than 6 months) that the company can take to immediately address some of the concerns expressed in the anonymous complaint?
• 4.What are at least two long-term actions (6 months to 2 years) that the company can take to address some of the concerns expressed in the anonymous complaint?
• 5.How can the company enhance its current annual employee diversity training? Why is this training important?
• 6.What initiatives can the company implement to celebrate diversity beyond race?
• 7.How can these initiatives bring employees together to celebrate diversity and promote inclusion?
