How are human services professionals similar to and different from other professionals who work in the same agency? How are they similar to and different from non-professional helpers (e.g., volunteers) who work in the same agency? What could you do to work collaboratively with both other professionals and non-professionals in the agency?

A CEO of a U.S. corporation, headquartered in New Haven, CT, speaking at annual shareholder’s meeting in San Francisco, CA. CEO will utilize chartered private aircraft for direct air travel from New Haven, CT to San Francisco, CA and return. A scheduled refuel stop is slated for Atlanta, GA. Ground travel at San Francisco, CA via hired driver service. Ground travel in New Haven, CT via assigned chauffer from corporation. The 3-hour meeting will be held at the ballroom of a 5-star hotel in downtown San Francisco.  The hotel has a security manager and staff of 6 security officers (2 security officers per 8 hour shift). CEO will be traveling without family, but with two corporate officers. CEO will occupy penthouse suite of hotel and take all meals but two through hotel room service.

Volunteers and political officials in local communities often campaign to improve conditions and provide services to increase the well-being of individuals and families living in those communities. If you are the parent of young children, you might focus on improving the local school or creating safe places where children can play. If you are an individual in later adulthood or a caregiver for an individual in later adulthood, what community resources might be important to you? For this week’s Assignment, you evaluate the resources that your local community provides for its older members.

To prepare for this Assignment, research the resources available in your local community to support the issues and concerns of the older population. Note any gaps in these services and consider what improvements might be made to existing services as well as what services should be added.

Submit a 2.5- to 4-page APA paper that includes the following:

  • A description of the services in your local community that support individuals in later adulthood
  • An evaluation of the effectiveness of the services you identified
  • A description of service gaps you identified
  • An explanation of how to improve existing services
  • A description of services that should be added, and why

Early Adulthood in the Media

Instructions

In this unit, you learned about early adulthood in terms of physical, cognitive, and personality development, and major social life events. For this assignment, you will reflect on those topics and how they are portrayed in popular media.

Think about a film or television show that features early adults as main characters. You can choose to watch one of the following films for this assignment (if you want to choose something else, email me first for approval):

  • The Graduate (1967)
  • She’s Having a Baby (1988)
  • Young Adult (2011)
  • Garden State (2004)
  • Reality Bites (1994)
  • Into the Wild (2007)
  • Raising Helen (2004)
  • Diner (1982)
  • Knocked Up (2007)
  • Life As We Know It (2010)

Take notes while watching the movie/tv show. Look for themes that were discussed in this unit. Some examples include:

  • intimacy vs. isolation
  • dialectical thought
  • gender roles
  • attachment
  • marriage
  • parenting

Select two themes that were present in the movie/tv show, and select two scenes from the movie/tv show that best portray those themes. Write a 2-3 page paper that follows this format (minimum 6 full paragraphs…remember, a full paragraph is at least 4 sentences long, beginning with a topic sentence):

  • 1st Paragraph: Give the title of the film/tv show and a brief synopsis in your own words
  • 2nd Paragraph: Explain Theme 1, in your own words as well as citing the course material and outside sources (you are NOT discussing the film in this paragraph – only the theme and what it means for early adults)
  • 3rd Paragraph: Describe Scene 1 and explain how it portrays Theme 1
  • 4th Paragraph: Explain Theme 2, in your own words as well as citing the course material and outside sources (you are NOT discussing the film in this paragraph – only the theme and what it means for early adults)
  • 5th Paragraph: Describe Scene 2 and explain how it portrays Theme 2
  • 6th Paragraph: Summarize your paper
  • Include a reference page and in-text citations for all sources used (all in APA format

Assignment 2: Discussion: Research Questions for Correlational and Chi-Square Designs

By the due date assigned, post your response to the prompt in the Discussion Area below. Through the end of the module, review at least two of your classmates’ responses, and offer your thoughts on their findings and any recommendations you have to enhance the discourse.

Post a behavioral research situation that could use a Pearson coefficient research study and a chi square research study. Present the rationale for each selection. Be very specific in your presentation.

In discussion 1, you considered how you might create an instrument for measuring a phenomenon or client issue. For this week’s Discussion 2, choose and evaluate an existing instrument to measure the concept you identified in Discussion 1. Consider how you would compare your original measurement to the existing measurement.

To Prepare: Review the following at the Walden Library on how to find existing instruments:

http://academicguides.waldenu.edu/library/testsmeasures

By Day 5

Posta brief explanation of the existing measurement instrument that you identified. Then, compare your original measurement approach to the existing instrument. Next, explain how you would revise or replace your original measurement plan. Finally explain the advantages and/or disadvantages of using existing instruments for measurement. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.

By Day 7

Respond to a colleague’s post by suggesting one alternative advantage or disadvantage of their chosen existing instrument of measurement. Explain why your suggestions have value. Please use the resources to support your answer.

Unit Assignments Unit II PowerPoint Presentation

Imagine that you are a practicing psychologist, and you are the featured presenter for the upcoming psychology conference. Your chosen topic centers upon factors that influence human behaviors and cognitions. In your presentation, you want to teach the audience about biological, evolutionary, and environmental factors that influence behaviors. To do this, you will need to prepare a PowerPoint to present to the audience. In your PowerPoint presentation, be sure to include the below concepts: Identify ways in which the environment can both nurture and thwart mental ability. Explain how nurture and nature play interactive roles in shaping behavior. Summarize the effects of some of the main neurotransmitters in the brain, and list four hormones that influence behavior. Your PowerPoint presentation must be at least eight slides in length, not including the cover slide and reference slide. In addition to your textbook, you must use a minimum of one scholarly source. Any information from an outside source that is used should be cited appropriately according to APA format. You may use the notes field in PowerPoint to expand on your ideas, if necessary, but this is not required. Your presentation style should appear professional, using appropriate formatting and graphics. If you have never created a PowerPoint, or if you want to brush up on your skills, watch this tutorial created by the CSU Writing Center to learn tips and best practices for creating a PowerPoint: http://columbiasouthern.adobeconnect.com/powerpointbestpractices/

Please read this NIH News in Health article, “Sleep On It”, then respond to the following questions:

According to the article, why is sleep so important for memory?

How much sleep do you get each night on average?

Prior to beginning this assignment, please review all the required readings from the first three weeks as well as the articles you used in your Week 2 Discipline-Based Literature Review. During this course, you have been developing your knowledge in the area of learning and cognition. In the Week 2 assignment, there was special focus on six topics that influence a wide variety of disciplines in psychology and other fields. In the final week of this course, you will develop a Learning and Cognition Handbook based on these topics.

This week, you will write an extensive review and annotated bibliography on one of the six main course topics below:

Traditional learning theories: Operant and classical conditioning

Traditional learning theories: Behaviorism and social learning theory

Attention and memory

Decision-Making

Language acquisition

Organizational and lifelong learning

The topic you choose should be based on the area in which you would most like to develop your knowledge. Your choice should also consider your current interests in psychology and support your future career goals.

As you prepare this assignment, keep in mind that it is designed to assist you with beginning the process of drafting your Learning and Cognition Handbook, which is due in Week 6.
