Career Typology & Choice

Holland’s typology and contributions to the career field are well known and widely used as a foundation to career counseling. Holland’s career typology is grounded in the belief that individuals are attracted to particular occupations to fulfill their personal needs and provide them with satisfaction. The theory rests on four assumptions:

  1. In our culture, persons can be categorized as one of the following: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, or conventional.
  2. There are six modal environments: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional.
  3. People search for environments that will let them exercise their skills and abilities, express their attitudes and values, and take on agreeable problems and roles.
  4. Behavior is determined by an interaction between personality and environment.

In a 700- to 1050-word (2- to 3-page) paper (not including the title and references pages) evaluate Holland’s career typology and address the following questions:

  • What do you see as the strengths and weaknesses of the typology?
  • What is the connection between Holland’s typology and career choice?
  • What factors might influence career choices that were not considered by Holland?
  • What other significant contributions has Holland made to career counseling?
  • How might you use this information when working with clients?

Use at least two scholarly sources in addition to the course text.

Read the “Social Communication Deficits in Conduct Disorder: A Clinical and Community Survey” article in the required readings. What type of research method was used? What questions/hypotheses were being evaluated? What methods were used in the study to obtain results, and describe how they were summarized and organized?

This discussion question meets the following CACREP Standard: 2.F.8.i. Analysis and use of data in counseling.

Discussion—Assessment and Diagnosis

Assessment and diagnosis are the first, and most critical, parts of substance use disorder treatment. Without an accurate assessment, the client may not benefit from the treatment options selected.

Review the following scenario and address the questions that follow:

Julia got into a car accident at the end of her senior year of high school, which resulted in a broken leg and an injured knee, both of which needed surgery to repair. During her recovery, she was in a lot of pain, so her doctor prescribed OxyContin.

After several weeks, the prescribed dose of OxyContin was no longer sufficient to completely alleviate Julia’s pain. So, she decided to take more than the prescribed dosage. This not only alleviated Julia’s pain, but it also gave her a feeling of euphoria, which she enjoyed. When Julia ran out of OxyContin and was unable to take it, she experienced a great deal of pain, even in areas of her body that were not affected by the car accident. She also found herself more anxious and agitated on days when she could not take OxyContin than on days when she did take it.

Based on your analysis of the scenario and module readings, respond to the following:

Which assessment tool(s) would you use to help evaluate and diagnose Julia’s substance use? Explain why you made your choice.

  • Based on the current DSM diagnostic criteria, does Julia’s behavior fit into a substance use disorder? Explain the rationale for your diagnosis.

Agency relationship refers to a consensual relationship between two parties, where one person (the principal) or entity authorizes the other, the agent, to act on his, her, or its behalf. Agency relationships exist in most large corporations due to the separation of management from ownership. The lack of alignment of the principal and the agent interests create an agency cost. What are the main implications of this separation? What are the ways to mitigate the agency cost and align the interest of the management and shareholders?

Write a 550-word paper summarizing the path a bill takes to become a law. Utilize your selected health policy issue as the hypothetical bill when delineating the legislative process.

Health policy issue: Prescription drug abuse

Include the following in your paper:

Possible political strategies that may be employed to push the proposed bill through the varying stages of the legislative process and keep it from being stalled or killed.

Why are these strategies the most appropriate?

How will these strategies influence your particular bill?

Using a conceptual model for policy making from p. 64 in Ch. 7 of Policy & Politics, explain why the bill should be placed on the formal agenda for the legislature.

What potential barriers currently exist that could block the bill from being passed?

How will you keep these barriers from derailing your bills process?
