Use to write two examples about Privacy and Power.
Here is the introduction.
As the internet first became available in the early 1990s, the world experienced a way to communicate and deliver information that has never been experienced before. People were now able to communicate across states, purchase products in different countries, and build multidimensional businesses in the process; however, as the internet started to grow and become ingrained in every facet of the modern world, adverse side effects began to arise due to the rapid growth of the World Wide Web (WWW). As the number of users and websites increased, the amount of data that was being produced grew exponentially. This exponential growth of individual user data drove companies to begin to collect and analyze that data to help predict consumer behavior and individual purchasing habits.
This information proved vital for corporations to help foster and grow their businesses. However, as more businesses began to solicit users for their personal information, third party companies began to surveill large online websites for more targeted and directed consumer information. This direct and targeted surveillance of everyday internet users is becoming a growing concern and ethical issue for the individuals who use the internet in their daily lives. This collection and distribution of consumer data and information show the need for privacy and regulation on data collection and distribution while engaging in online activities. The average daily consumer is, mostly, unaware that their personal information is being collected and used to create more targeted and direct recommendations towards them.
However, with the recent revelations of these third party phantom companies operating and collecting consumer data without consumers consent, there is a growing need for expanded regulation and increased scrutiny of third party data collectors and their large scale social media conglomerate counterparts. In order to more clearly understand the ethical and moral problems that are operating in the data collection industry, and the need for consumer privacy, individuals need to take a greater look into three theories that are ingrained into this issue: critical theory, culture theory, and systems theory.
Critical theory is concerned with the abuse of power in an organization and the ways in which individuals can liberate themselves from being dominated or oppressed. This theory is strong in understanding how these powerful companies hold power over their customers by collecting their individual data. Next, culture theory explains the culture and identities of an organization and how they operate within an environment. Culture theory takes a look at how large organizations create their own identities and how they manage their organization, especially in the social media and technology industries. Lastly, systems theory looks at the communication within an organization and how the system of ordering helps determine the success of the organization. Systems theory is prominent in the social media and technology sector through how they disseminate information between the user and the company.
Describe one of the safety committees your organization uses and how it reduces risk within your organization. Who are the general members of the group, how often do they meet, and is there a regulatory requirement that they report or publish notes? Is this a good use of the staff’s time or would another method that still addresses the safety goal of this group be more efficient? (2 paragraphs).
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), and the Joint Commission (JC) require that health care organizations maintain risk management programs to address infection control. Detail three measures that your health care organization (or any health care organization) could implement, beyond what is currently in practice, to support the delivery of safe health care services and avoid the spread of infection (e.g., placing hand washing devices at all of the public entrances of the health care facility). Support your response with a minimum of two peer-reviewed references (2 paragraphs)
In your paper,
Analyze the five components of emotional intelligence and their relationship to transformational leadership.
Discuss how to use transformational leadership combined with the use of emotional intelligence to improve a situation involving teams at work.
Distinguish between transactional, situational, and transformational leadership and the usefulness of each in impacting team performance.
Discuss the impact of culture and ethics on the leadership of teams.
Fiction Analysis Final Draft
By the due date assigned, submit your revised analytical essay on short fiction as a Microsoft Word document.
Revise the Week 4 analytical essay by doing the following:
- Consider how you want to incorporate the ideas and arguments from the outside source you located for your Week 5 scholarly article discussion. Include at least one quotation from the source in your final draft. Be sure to use APA style to cite it appropriately in the body of the essay and in the references section.
- Consider the feedback you received on your rough draft from your instructor, peers, and Smarthinking (if submitted for review), and determine what changes you want to make. Do you need a more engaging opener or a stronger thesis? Do you need to reinforce your arguments and add more supporting evidence? Do you have areas to develop or clarify? Are you satisfied with your conclusion?
- Once you have revised the essay, review it for editing issues. Run the spell checker and grammar checker in Word, and then proofread, looking for typos the checkers might have missed. Read it out loud to listen for awkward places and fine tune the flow.
- Make sure you have applied APA rules of style to source citations as well as the overall formatting of your essay.
Submit the essay to the Submissions Area when you are happy with your finished product.
Scholarly Article Annotation
By the due date assigned, post your annotated bibliography entry for a scholarly article to the discussion area. By the end of the week, respond to your classmates posts with your feedback, questions, and suggestions.
For this assignment, find a scholarly article on your Week 4 short story in the SUO Library. First, complete the lecture on conducting research in the SUO Library. Next, enter the online library and find one credible, scholarly source examining the short story that was the focus of your Week 4 rough draft. Do not use popular publications, such as summaries from Masterplots or The Introduction to Literary Context, or other media that are not research oriented. Refer to provided for this course by South University Online Library Services.
Post an annotation of your source to the discussion board. Your annotation should include:
- A complete APA citation of your scholarly article
- A paragraph of summary of the key points presented in your source
- A paragraph explaining the sources quality and how it is relevant to your analytical essay
Here is an example of an annotated APA entry (not an actual source):
Smith, A. (2016). Journey into the unknown. American Literature, 22(3), 4-5.
This article compares Nathaniel Hawthornes Young Goodman Brown and Eudora Weltys A Worn Path, discussing the protagonists journeys as a focal point. The article examines these two main characters and their different paths in life. Those paths led Young Goodman Brown and Phoenix Jackson into the forest on very different quests, but both were determined to take these journeys that were emotional, meaningful, and dangerous.
Smiths article offered a fascinating perspective on the motives and outcomes of these two disparate characters and their life paths that led them into the unknown. I gained a better understanding of my character, Phoenix Jackson, by reading this article and contrasting her with Young Goodman Brown. There are several quotations and ideas I will be able to incorporate into my final draft.
Examples of Journals with Scholarly Articles:
- Studies in Short Fiction
- The Explicator
- Modern Fiction Studies
- Language and Literature
- Critique
- Modern Language Notes
- Nineteenth-Century Fiction
- Twentieth-Century Literature
Your replies to classmates should be at least a paragraph in length and made with an eye to expand, clarify, defend, and/or refine their thoughts. Consider asking questions to further meaningful conversation. Participation must be completed by the end of the week to earn credit.
Post directly to the discussion; do not attach a document.
Supplemental Materials:
Who Do You Think You Are?
Identify the various cultural groups you belong to, both voluntary and involuntary. Choose one of these groups and think about your membership in that group. Think about how belonging to that group influences your perceptions and values. For example, how is your worldview influenced by belonging to your family? By being male or female? By being Asian American, or White, or an international student? Etc.
(I’m nternational student from Qatar )
Using either Hofsteades Value Dimensions OR the range of values described by Strodtbeck and Kluckhohn, describe how these value orientations affect your communication with others.
Be sure to make a clear link between what we have learned from class and how it relates to your analysis of your communication behaviors. You should use terms we discussed in class in your analysis. Each paper should have an appropriate introductory paragraph with a central idea expressed. The paper should also have an appropriate conclusion that sums up the paper. Finally, the paper should be free of errors, use correct grammar and spelling and be college level quality.
Format: The paper should be a full 2-3 pages (500-750 words) (no shorter than 2 full pages/500 words), double-spaced, 12-point font (Times New Roman, Cambria, Book Antiqua, Arial, or Calibri), and 1-inch margins, please. I do not need a cover page. If your only references are the book, I do not need a reference page. If you do use other sources, you should use APA format when citing in the text of the paper and on a reference page. Sloppy proofreading can cause you to receive a lower grade.
Fiction Analysis Rough Draft
By the due date assigned, attach the rough draft of your essay as a Microsoft Word document to the Discussion Area. By the end of the week, comment on at least two of your classmate’s submissions using the peer review questions provided below.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Your instructor will assign five short stories for the class to read and discuss this week. Check the Week 4 Announcement for a list of the assigned stories. You must choose one of these stories to earn credit on the assignment.
Compose an analytical essay of at least 1,200 words in which you offer an interpretation of a literary element in one of the assigned short stories. Write your analysis focusing on one of the following elements in one of the assigned stories:
- Character
- Theme
- Symbolism
- Imagery
- Setting
Start by selecting one of the short stories assigned by your instructor. Brainstorm to identify the literary element that you would like to explore in the story. Choose from character, theme, symbolism, imagery, or setting. Then, develop a thesis that offers a specific interpretation of this element. If you have trouble coming up with a thesis, contact your instructor, who will help you. Do not do any outside research at this point. When finished, the draft should be at least 1,200 words (approximately four double-spaced pages). Use APA formatting and citations.
NOTE: Your instructor may allow you to combine two literary elements in your thesis statement if they work together to support your point. Also, your instructor may allow you to compare or contrast some element in two of the assigned stories (e.g., the grandmother characters in A Worn Path and A Good Man Is Hard to Find). Ask for approval before beginning one of these approaches.
Tips for the Essay
- Open your introduction with an engaging opener, such as a question, quote from the story, or interesting idea. Then, connect to the short story and mention the title and the author. End your introduction with a thesis statement that interprets a literary element of the story.
- The body paragraphs should support your thesis. Present specific aspects of the short story that help to illustrate your points. Make sure to quote from the story and analyze specific lines that support your argument. Body paragraphs typically have at least two short quotations each as supporting evidence.
- Include a strong concluding paragraph that summarizes your main points and explains the significance of the thesis. Finish this paragraph with a strong and satisfying ending.
APA Reminder
Use APA style for formatting the essay and for source citations. Begin with a title page. Include a running header, and use proper font and spacing. End with a separate references page. Refer to the Week 1 lecture on avoiding plagiarism for an APA essay template and additional resources.
Peer Responses
By the end of the week, respond to two peers essays, using the following questions:
- Does the introduction have an attention-getting opener? Does the introduction give the author and title of the story? Does the introduction have a thesis statement as its final sentence? Does the thesis offer an interpretation that is clear and specific? What are your suggestions for the introduction and thesis?
- Is each body paragraph organized around a key point? Do the paragraphs offer support with direct quotations from the story? Are the quotes and examples analyzed and explained? Do you disagree with any parts of the analysis? What aspects of the story are left unexplained? Do you have any suggestions for improving the body paragraphs?
- Does the conclusion summarize the main points? Does it have a strong ending that leaves the reader satisfied? Do you have suggestions for improving the conclusion?
Peer responses are worth 30 points toward this assignments grade, so do not miss out on this portion of the assignment! Remember that all peer responses must be posted by the end of the week to earn credit.
Theme
By the due date assigned, post your response of at least 150-200 words to the Discussion Area. By the end of the week, comment on at least two of your classmates’ submissions.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Your instructor will assign five short stories for the class to read and discuss this week. Check the Week 4 Announcement for a list of the assigned stories. You must choose one of these stories to earn credit on the assignment.
Prompt:
Select one of the stories assigned by your instructor, and develop a one- or two-paragraph response to the following:
- Identify one of the main themes used in the story. Explain the message the author is conveying by telling the story in this way.
- Provide at least one specific example and at least one quotation from the story to illustrate your point.
- Discuss how this message affects your reading and interpretation of the story. Is the story more effective or powerful because this theme is included?
Theme refers to the underlying messages or major ideas presented in the story. The author presents some belief about life by telling the story in a certain way. You, as the reader, can interpret what message you received from reading the story, but you must be able to offer evidence to support your viewpoint by sharing examples and quotations from the story.
Tips
Remember to provide evidence for your claims in the form of quoted passages from the story. Quotations, paraphrases, and summaries should be cited according to APA rules of style, including in-text and reference citations. Quoted material should not exceed 25% of the document.
Check grammar and spelling before posting.
