Central Topic: Diversity & Equality
An annotation should include a concise prcis of the book, but not a point-by-point plot summary. Plot summary is ultimately dull stuff. Just give a few sentences for an overview of the book. What larger-view context is important about the book? After you give an overview of the book, choose one or two specific details to make your point. Thatll help the reader to see and understand both the book and your points. Finish up with a so what about the book. Why is it important? Why should someone read it? Bring your sense of voice to the annotation; bring your sense of analysis and judgment to the annotation as well.
Following your annotations, write a critical commentary about the collection of four books that youve chosen. (This is why its important that theyre on the same topic, in the same genre, or share some category commonality.) Choose a central topic for analysis that allows you to provide a close reading (of the verbal and/or visual text) of the four books. How is meaning made in these books, and what do they present to children? Its crucial to stay away from plot summary here and to focus on argument. You should present a clear thesis, and develop it with further supportive arguments as well as specific evidence from the books. Your primary objective should be supporting your argument with a close reading of texts. That doesnt mean just supplying quotes or specific details from illustrations; it means you should be examining the implications and nuances of those details and evidence as you build your argument.
aim for a 4 page critical discussion/commentary on the books
it is essential to closely define your thesis, to narrow your focus to very specific scenes, and to provide a close reading, including the use of quotations or specific examples from illustrations to support your argument
