I. COUNTRY QUESTION

1.Describe a national hero or heroine from the country, someone who is famous or admired for things they did in or for their country. This should be one nicely written paragraph with a picture (see examples at the end of the homework). Cite at least three sources in MLA format that discuss the person (you dont want to say someone is famous just because theyre listed as so on a single website, right?). Include a photo, and make sure to credit the URL where the photo came from. (This question is worth 40 pts, so put some work into it).

This can be a political figure, a scientist, philosopher, activist, or artist (literature, art, music, literature, activist, etc.). Someone admired today for their accomplishments or personal qualities. No sports figures please. Include when they lived, where they lived, what they dida little bit about their lives. Discuss things they said or did that demonstrate the qualities they are admired for. Remember you are choosing the hero from the locals perspective, not necessarily yours. They should preferably not be the founder/first president of a country (theyre pretty much always considered as heroes).

Note this assignment will involve a fair amount of creative googling, following links, then following those links, etc. You may have to read some of the countrys history too. Skimming tourist websites may also provide good leads.

Tips on how to search:
– Search term suggestions (using Senegal as an example):
Senegal famous people
Senegal famous women
Senegalese writers
Senegalese activists
– See who is depicted on the currency or stamps of your country.
– See if there are any Nobel Prize winners from your country.

CountryLicious (http://countrylicious.com/) can be a good site for non-cultural information such as economy, demographics, and famous people…

Doing one or all of the above, and/or your own googling, might yield, for example, Mariama Be from Senegal, Hafiz from Iran, or Julio Garavito from Colombia. Sample bios for these people (that I wrote, and that can serve as examples) are at the end of this document.
CITING WEB SITES

Remember (and this can be found many places), a general guideline for formatting web citations in MLA is:

If there is no named author of the article:

For in-text:
(Name of article/web page).

For Works Cited:
Name of article/web page. Website name, Publisher name [this will often be the same as the website name), date published (if there is one). Web. Date accessed.

If there a named author of the article:

For in-text:
(Authors last name).

For Works Cited:
Authors last name, first name. Name of article/web page. Website name, Publisher name [this will often be the same as the website name), Date published (if there is one). Web. Date accessed.

Examples of in-text and works cited references can be found in the Heroes examples at the end of this homework.
