Jacob is a 16 year old high school student who was referred to the school counselor due to repeated behavioral problems at school. Jacob has a reputation among the employees at his high school for being “trouble”.  Jacob frequently gets into conflicts with his teachers, often resulting in school suspensions. He has been kicked off the school football team due to recurrent arguments with his coach, which had escalated into a physical conflict.

Jacob’s mother had attended one of the therapy sessions, at the request of the school counselor. During that session, Jacob was antagonistic towards both the counselor and his mother. The counselor noted that Jacob repeatedly resisted his mother’s efforts to make suggestions to him. When the school counselor suggested that Jacob have a psychological evaluation, his mother sighed, and explained that they had tried that before, and when Jacob became antagonistic with the psychiatrist, he was asked to leave. His mother resignedly said “these situations seem to happen all of the time with Jacob”.
