Listen to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and in 250 words or less evaluate the musical elements used within. Consider the following when listening and responding:
– Changes in dynamics to indicate the beginning of a new movement or to add emphasis.
– The use of different textures within the melody.
– Consonance and dissonance, creating senses of repose and tension at different points in the score.
– Changes in tempo, which evoke different emotions. What does a slower tempo do? A faster tempo?
Your responses will be evaluated on your critical analysis of the score, as well as your incorporation of the musical terms. Be specific and include examples (with timestamps) from within the score to help illustrate your understanding.

Essays should be Times, 12 pt. font, double spaced and put in one .doc file. Footnotes are not needed. What you need to know is in the lectures and the textbook. Dont cut and paste filler info.A good essay is probably about 3 pages of focused analysis in support of a complex thesis statement that responds directly to the prompt questions.
Consider using the following terms in some of your essays as they are relevant. The terms pull you into some key ideas, especially regarding Hindu Krishna devotion.bhava                                rasa                          parakiya  zenana                              durbar                      sringaranayaka                              nayika                      vipralambha
Comparative EssaysFor each slide comparison, first copy and paste the information that identifies the left and right image. Then, write an analytic essay that answers the specific question. Explain how the formal elements (composition, color, space, line, texture, etc.) work together with the subject and the function of the image to create meaning. Do NOT simple describe what the works look like. Instead, craft a thesis that answers the question. Then analyze each work to demonstrate your thesis

Write a sizable post (1 pages) about the differences in graphic design for print vs. graphic design for the web: What are the differences and why do they matter? What would change in a print design if it morphed into a web interface? This can be a series of bullet points about each or it can be in paragraph format. Youll present your findings during class next week.

Select one of the documentaries listed below. All of these are available to stream through the librarys website or are on reserve at Irwin Library.  If you would like to watch a documentary that is not on this list, please check with me.

Watch the entire documentary. This is on the honor system. It is your loss if you choose not to engage fully with this assignment.

Write and carefully edit a response of approximately 23 pages (ca. 500750 words). Your response should be organized into coherent paragraphs. You may write in first person (I, me, my, etc.) when appropriate, but please maintain a formal, academic style of writing.

Your response should include the following:

One to two paragraphs in which you introduce the documentary (the title, when it was made, where it was made, who made it, etc.) and summarize its content. What is the documentary about? Who are some of the main figures? What kind(s) of music are introduced? What is the films agenda/argument/purpose? In this section, try to be succinct and objective.
Two to three paragraphs in which you articulate a response to the documentary. Be sure to explain and defend your response (i.e. it is not enough to say I loved it or I hated it without supporting your opinion). Please address both of the following:
Your broad impressions of the documentary. You may wish to consider some (probably not all!) of the following questions: What did you learn from the documentary? What did you think about the concept of the documentary as a whole? Did you respond strongly to it or not? What did you think about how the filmmakers portrayed the people/musics/cultures in the film? Would you recommend this documentary to a friend or family member? Why or why not?
Your specific impressions of a single aspect of the documentary. Identify a specific scene, interviewee, musical moment, etc. that caught your attention and discuss your thoughts on it. This could be something that you especially liked, something you found especially problematic, something that you found difficult to relate to, something that seemed very relatable, etc.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The quality of your writing is a component of your grade. I am expecting polished, proofread essays, not first drafts. If you would like help proofreading your essay, please make an appointment with the Butler Writers Studio (https://www.butler.edu/writersstudio (Links to an external site.)) or ask our GA, Daniel, for help.

Write about what you dont understand, or what you half-understand, or how the material connects to the previous week, or what about the material fascinates you and why. You must address all the readings, but you dont have to do it equally. You can problematize or extend or complexify the material. Do write in proper English; however, do not write mini papers or reports or thesis statements or anything that resembles formal writing.

In 1-2 typed double spaced pages, formally analyze one painting from giottodibone.org.

The painting is your choice. This is not a research paper, I want to hear your thoughts on the painting in your own words.

You must include a labeled image from the website of the painting you chose

All images can be found here:

https://www.giottodibondone.org/the-complete-works.html

Your paper should be formatted like this:

Description: To the best of your abilities describe what is happening in this painting as you see it.

Analysis: How is Giotto rendering this image? How is he using space/depth? How is he using perspective? What choices is he making as an artist and why? What is being shown and what is not?

Interpretation: What is Giotto trying to say in this picture by painting it in such a way?

What do you think this painting means?

Judgment: Is Giotto effective in getting his point across through the painting? Why or why not?

Read the article, then summarize the article in less than 200 words and answer the 6 questions below.

SUMMARIZE
In your own words, summarize the authors main point or argument for Daniel Connolly’s article.

Things to consider: what is the main idea set forth in the book chapter?  How does the author support their thesis?  In the end, do you believe the author has successfully argued (proven) their thesis?  How so?  What types of evidence does the author use to do this? (e.g., primary sources, secondary sources, works of art, etc.).  You need to illustrate that you have done the reading and have engaged with it in a meaningful way. This summary should be about 200 words minimum.
