Where should we place the blame–chronologically and policy-wise–for New York City’s urban crisis and mid-seventies financial meltdown? Do you think the Lindsay administrations alleviated the problems facing the Big Apple or did they further pave the city’s road to implosion? What were the effects of New York’s financial collapse, and how did municipal neglect and capital divestment of certain neighborhoods actually work toward an innovative cultural explosion?
Grades will be based on the following assessments: content and analysis, organization and style.Try not to be overly mechanical in your writingbe smooth and lively (take a cue from the readings youve been assigned).
Citing: You dont need a works cited page, but you do need to either use footnotes or in-text (parenthetical) citations. If you use footnotes, you can just enter the last name of the author and the page # (and no, thats not proper Chicago style but for these purposes itll do). If you use in-text citing, just put the authors name and page # within parenthesis.
Authors names are on the syllabus. If page numbers arent readily available, then base it on the sources numerical flow (if not paginated, then if its the seventh page in order, then call it 7).

**PLEASE USE SOURCES BELOW, while you do not need to use all of them just make sure that you use whatever you need for the essay, these are the sources I was given and I need to at least make sure that they cited.**

Aim for at least 600 words. If you like, you can prepare your actual essay answers in advance and then paste your answer into the assignment but this is not necessary or mandatory.

Write a well organized essay that includes:
–an introduction with a thesis or interpretive statement;
–well-constructed paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting details;
–evidence from a variety of times and cultures;
–a conclusion that wraps up the main issues.

3-4 pages, double spaced
Write about one topic from this course, as if you were trying to explain it to a student that did not take this course.  Make sure this topic is not too broad.  The format is still a formal essay, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Use 2-3 readings from class to explain this topic to the other student.  These must be readings from our course.  You can use PowerPoints or videos, in addition to at least 2 readings from the course.
At least one reading should represent a different time period.
At least one reading should be a primary source.
Be clear about your time periods.
You should provide historical context for your sources.  For example, you should make note of the date of the sources. For example, if it is from 1905, what else was happening in 1905? What else is important from 1905 to explain your source? Who wrote the source?  If your source was written in 1970, and was about acquaintance rape, what is significant about the 70s that would allow someone to write about this topic?  Illustrate historical knowledge; do not treat your sources as if they could come from any time period.
Provide a brief reference list, that lists your sources.
When using a source, provide the title and date.  If quoting, provide a page #.

The Spanish had a long history of conquering in the name of the Lord, from the reconquista to the conquistadores to the settlement of the New World.  Spain justified its conquests as its mission to save the souls of heathens, while putting them to work in subhuman conditions.  Explore this paradox, of conquering and killing in the name of saving.  Remember to think about what else is going on in the world in regard to the Protestant Reformation and the Inquisition.

2. Compare Indian society with that of the Europeans.  What differences were there?  Similarities?  Be sure to include in your analysis ideas about religion, land, and gender roles, as well as notions about freedom.

3. Explain as thoroughly as you can how the slave trade affected African society.

Write a full three-page document, double-space, 12 font, with detailed information.  (See syllabus.) Cite your sources after each question.  (Foner, pg. numbers), (recorded lectures), etc.  I will assign a grade based on your thoughtful and complete exploration of the assignment

You will write a four to five page essay explaining how different historians have approached the Great Depression in New York. You must use six secondary sources. Two of these sources should be books, two should be journal articles and two should be book reviews.

The essay will be 4-5 pages. Use Chicago Manual of Style Bibliographic form. See https://clas.uiowa.edu/history/teaching-and-writing-center/style-and-citation/bibliographic-forms

Despite overwhelming and credible evidence about African contributions to global history and culture, perceptions remain about the continent’s (and by extension its descendants) supposed barbarism, ignorance and depravity.  In this week’s discussion forum, please consider the following:

How and why were these perceptions created in the first place?  What purpose did or does negative imagery about Africa serve?  Is it important that these ideas about Africa, and its past and current inhabitants change?  Why or why not?  What can or should be done to change these perceptions?

Your post should be 2-3 full paragraphs.  Please include page numbers from the textbook of the information you use.

The War of 1812 is a very interesting war to study because it is often referred to as the Second Revolutionary War. After reading about the war in your textbook, give your opinion as to WHY President Madison chose to war with Great Britain considering how young the United States was compared to the great British Empire at that time.  Discuss at least 2-3 reasons for the War of 1812 and whether or not you think the U.S. won the war?  Why or why not?
