Instructions:

Select ONE TOPIC out of the choices below

1. A genre of popular music that you are familiar with (country and western, rock, blues, hip-hop, rap, etc.)
2. A recreational activity that you are regularly involved in (either as a participant or as a spectator, i.e., fan)
3. A reality television program that you have access to and that interests you
One of the new social media (e.g., Twitter or Facebook)

Discuss your choice in a critical essay which includes:
-A clear thesis backed by supporting argumentation.
-A minimum of 5 (FIVE) peer-reviewed scholarly sources from outside of the course materials, which are referenced in the body of the paper and listed in a properly formatted bibliography or works cited page.
-Good critical analysis of the topic.

CHOOSE TWO OF THE QUESTIONS questions to answer. Your essay answers must begin with an introductory paragraph that includes a thesis statement. Then select two or three supporting arguments and develop them in some detail. It is unlikely that you will be able to address all of the possible issues in this brief essay, so be sure to select your supporting points carefully and bring them together in the form of a modest conclusion. You should reference the relationship between everyday culture and the idea of community. Referencing The Truman Show (movie) is highly recommended!

CHOOSE 2:
Are cultures of everyday life worthy of study?
Are traditional gender roles still reflected in the home?
Are centralization and bureaucratization still central characteristics of the social organization of the modern workplace?
Has our understanding of what constitutes community changed over time?
How is everyday culture a site of contestation?

Professor’s instructions:

Globalization refers to the increasing economic interdependence of countries with trade, it also refers to a rise in cultural exchange. It also refers to knowledge, information, people, across international borders. Whether we like it or not just like technology, globalization is not going anywhere!

There are people that believe that globalization will save the world. That it will bring development to the world and fix 3rd world poverty.
On the other hand, there are people that regard it with hostility, even fear. They believe that it will increase inequality within and between nations, threaten employment and living standards and stop social progress.

Which side are you on? Explain in 3 paragraphs your stance on globalization.

Student’s notes: My stance on globalization is positive, please write accordingly.

People in the United States vary widely in their acceptance of the sexual and gender choices and orientations.  Recent changes in the legality of same sex marriage, the changing role of women in the military, and increasing awareness of transgender issues have highlighted how much has changed in recent months.

Choose one of these sources:
Find an article or graph that illustrates a recent change in law, attitude, or policy regarding sexual tolerance.

Does it raise personal issues for you? If you were in Rasheeds position, would you feel competent to work with Steve? What if Steve discovered that he harbored negative attitudes toward African Americans? Would that make a difference in your response to this scenario?
