Module 3 – Case
SPECIAL OCCASIONS AND DELIVERING THE SPEECH
Case Assignment
Prepare and deliver a speech to entertain that would be approximately two minutes (equates to two typed pages) in length. The goal of a speech to entertain is to have the audience relax, smile, and enjoy the occasion.

Your speech should have a main point, or message and hopefully include a mix of humor with a more serious morals or lesson learned. In other words, there should be a point to the speech instead of a series of one-liners strung together, one after another. You might include a lighthearted story that reveals a life lesson you have learned, examine a common topic from a different (or unexpected) point of view, or take a lighthearted look at a particular issue and have some fun with it. Always make an effort to select an audience-centered topic and try to personalize your content to engage your audience.

Topics may include:

Wedding toast (best man or maid/matron of honor speech)
Birthday speech
Farewell speech
Graduation speech
Funeral speech
Commemorative speech
The speech should follow the same outline template used in Module 2’s SLP. I recommend you complete an outline for your entertaining speech before recording to make sure that you address each component in developing an effective speech. For example, the speech should include parts of a speech like an attention-getter, preview/purpose statement, credibility statement, etc., as indicated in the provided template.

This speech must be submitted in video format (Webcam or Smart Device). Please make sure to stabilize your camera before recording and filter any background noise. Your speech should be a minimum of 2 minutes in length. If your speech is more than 4 minutes long or 85 MB, you will need to compress your files before uploading. Please submit an e-ticket from the TLC homepage if you have problems uploading due to file size.

MyTLC Courses only supports the following media formats: SWF, MPG, MPEG, RM, MP3, MP4*, M4V*, M4A*, AVI, WAV, RAM, ASF, MOV, and RA.

You may use 4 x 6 note cards and deliver your remarks extemporaneously (not memorized or read word for word).

Please stand for your speech delivery and be aware that your dress is important to speech delivery. In some cases, your attire can act as a visual aid. Inappropriate and distracting clothing (e.g., text printed on shirt, graphics, and loud colors) and accessories (e.g., sparkly and noisy jewelry) can prevent your speech from being received well or interpreted correctly, and can hinder the establishment of the speaker/audience relationship.

Assignment Expectations
Create a two-minute entertaining speech based on the Module 3 SLP outline and record in video format (Webcam or Smart Device).

Assignment 1: Relating to first weeks assigned reading: Boyd & Silk prologue and first three chapters.

Please follow the word count minimum-maximum range (in parentheses) for each when writing your answers to the following questions relating to the weeks readings. Be as detailed and complete as you can within the word count range.

1. (300-400 words) Chpt. 1      Using Darwins postulates below, describe a made up, but realistic evolutionary scenario where a bird species could evolve from not having migration south for the winter into a species that does have migration south for the winter.
i.    i.    variation arising each generation between individuals within the species
ii.    ii.    a struggle for existence
iii.    iii.    heritability (offspring inheriting their parents variations)

2. (100-200 words) Chpt. 1    What are the evolutionary origins of todays domesticated breeds of dogs and why is the process of their evolution considered artificial selection and not natural selection?

3. (250-300 words) Chpt. 2  Please write your best paragraph telling me about Mendels two main principles of heredity.

4. (250-300 words) Chpt. 2  Describe the cell processes (using the proper vocabulary from the second chapter) that result in an adults genes get copied and ending up contributing to 1/2 of the zygotes genes.

5. (100-150 words) Chpt. 2    Very briefly tell me how a gene (which is a recipe in molecular form) ends up being expressed in the body of the organism.

6. (75-100 words) Chpt. 3      Briefly summarize the essential understanding that the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium provides for us.

7. (200-300 words) Chpt. 3    Regarding the modern synthesis, explain: 1) why early geneticists thought the Mendelian patterns of inheritance were incompatible with Darwins theory of natural selection, and 2) How this seeming incompatibility was reconciled.  In your answer be sure you explain how continuous variation comes about in populations (see Figures 3.5, 3.6, & 3.7 and accompanying text).

8. (200-300 words) Chpt. 3  Write on the concept of adaptations focusing on: 1) definition of, and 2) two of (what you find to be) the most interesting limitations on adaptations.

This is a 2-3 page (double-spaced) assignment. Your job is to write a personal listening reflection about Beyonc – Formation from this module of the course. In doing so, you must:

1. Describe in some way the sounds that you hear.
2. Describe what those sounds make you think about/feel, i.e. describe how the song strikes you.
3. Tie in some reading material from this module section.

You may write about any aspect of the music that you like, but your paper should in some way demonstrate your understanding of the key social and musical characteristics of the music according to the readings from our course.

This is a pass/fail assignment. If you incorporate all three of those elements, you pass. If you don’t, you fail.
