his week we examine freedom. To do this, we read about economic freedom, equality of opportunity, and equality of outcome. Like all societies throughout time, social paradoxes elevate frustration levels. You read about two inconsistencies including that while our model of modified capitalism encourages economic self-interest while our model of self-governance encourages that we voluntarily assume the role of being our brothers keeper (i. e. engaged citizenship). You also learned that Americans are not as interested in equality as they are in the sense of fairness.
Life exists in the tension between the ideal and the pragmatic (the real world). Think of an example in your life, whether at work, home, school, or during your relaxation time, when you, or someone you know, struggled with a conflict between, the way things ought to be, and the way things are. How do you do it?

Operational Assignment Details:
This assignment is due on Sunday at 10 p.m. CST. Your substantive comments are due the following Tuesday at 10 p.m. CST. Each journal entry should be a minimum of 300 words. Your journal entry narrative is subjective and can be written in the first person. Citations are not required, but the inclusion of the assigned reading articles is strongly encouraged. This Assignment Project will introduce the student to the various tools, models, and theories that can be used for preparedness including the five steps of the FEMA Planning System.

In any discipline including crises, the importance to look at the different sciences and theories to consider and apply is crucial. The models and theories that can apply to crises can be taken from various planning, leadership, and modeling applications. These theories, models, and tools vary and will depend on the type of situation faced.

During this module, some of the different models, theories, and tools will be considered and surveyed. In the Case study, the student will survey and synthesize these to the FEMA Planning System.

Consider these basic definitions from Webster’s Dictionary:

Crisis: A difficult or dangerous situation that needs serious attention
Risk: The possibility that something bad or unpleasant (such as an injury or a loss) will happen
Management: The act or skill of controlling and making decisions
Crisis and risk management are both involved with dealing with threats to an organization.  Depending on the threats faced, an organization can mitigate or eliminate the threat by implementing a management program. Both crisis and risk management deal with threats, but risk management deals with threats before the event occurs and crisis management deals with a threat as it unfolds or after the event occurs. Some of the types of crises can include natural phenomena, malfunctioning equipment, human error, confrontation (strikes, boycotts, etc.), malevolence (intentional efforts to harm a company), and flawed leadership. 

For this Assignment, you are to answer the following:

Explain the difference between risk and crisis management and the role of the National Response Framework and the National Incident Management System plays.
Do you consider crisis management a part of risk management? Justify your answer.
Describe the types of crises faced by your organization today. In your opinion, which type is the most important to be prepared for and why?

Instructions
This assignment is in three parts. All three parts must be completed.

PART 1

Your boss has asked you to review the accident information for the CSU Widget Factory. The information he sent you is provided here.

Using the provided CSU Widget Factory OSHA 300A log, calculate the total recordable incidence rate (TRIR), the days away, restricted, or transferred (DART) rate, the lost workday injury and illness rate (LWDII), and the severity rate (SR). Be sure to show your calculations in a Word document.

PART 2

Using the CSU Widget Factory OSHA 300A log (from Part I), distinguish some of the leading indicators that you would use if examining the CSU Widget Factory Safety Management System. Prepare a summary of your findings, including any suggestions for improvement.

PART 3

Your boss wants more information on one of the accidents listed on the CSU Widget Factory OSHA 300 log. He has sent you the OSHA Form 301, Injury and Illness Incident Report, for the accident involving William Smith (available here). Mr. Smiths supervisor filled out the form, but it only includes basic information. To prepare to conduct a more thorough investigation, do the following:

Develop a list of five questions to ask Mr. Smiths supervisor about the circumstances surrounding the incident. Explain the importance of each question you create.
Select two theories of accident causation, and explain how you would use them to help in the accident investigation.
Your submission must be a minimum of two pages, not including title and reference pages, and follow APA guidelines. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. 

Located current job opportunities in the criminal justice field in the areas of Court or Juvenile Officer, Law Enforcement Officer, and Adult Corrections/Probation Parole Officer that will correlate with your interview assignments. Sources may include newspapers, state job service websites, federal agencies, or publications. Once selected, a summary of the job announcement, the source and application procedures should be posted to the discussion topic.

Complete a case essay on any United States Supreme Court case that involves an interpretation of the Constitution – this encompasses most of the cases that come before the Supreme Court. However, please choose a case that was heard by the Supreme Court from 2009 to the present. Again, please do not choose a case that is older than 2009. This will help ensure that you are writing your essay on current, relevant case law.

– Your essay should be around 2 pages and contain the following information:

– Who is involved in the case?

– How has the case moved through the legal system (who filed it, in what court? What appellate court heard it? How did it get to the Supreme Court?)?

– What was the issue in the case?

– What did the Court decide? (note that the US Supreme Court is called “Court”, not “court” and not “SCOTUS”)

– What was the Court’s analysis (WHY did they decide as they did)?

– Did any Justices dissent, and if so, what did they have to say?

– What is the impact of this case?
