For your first paper, discuss the origins and development of the “culture wars” as described by Hartman. Consider the following sets of questions:

Where did the idea that changing structures of knowledge and thought could reshape politics come from? How did it shape ensuing debates? Give at least two examples from different chapters.

How do the problems of difference and equality shape how race and gender were politicized after the 1960s? Give at least two examples.

Why do you think culture war concerns over identity became more important than debates over economic structures in American life?

Use only Hartman and supplementary material discussed in class (no outside sources). Use at least two contemporary news sources in addition to readings from Hartman.
