Your object is to consider how the later poet takes the first poem and transforms it.  Even an apparently irreverent version of the prior poem can, in its way, be loving and affectionate towards its original.  Does the later poem tease out meanings in the poem that inspired it?  Place those meanings in a new cultural context?  Does the poet want to make a point?  To what degree is the later poet writing an homagethat is, treating the original with honor and respect?  Or is the later poet in some way arguing with the earlier poet?
