Step 1: Watch Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson (a link is available in this module).  I would encourage you to watch the entire film.  At a minimum, watch sections 1-6 and 21-40.

Step 2: Use one secondary source to research a related topic on the linkages between gender, race, and sexuality during this period in American history.  This research can focus explicitly on the life of Jack Johnson or explore a related topic from the film that you find interesting.

IN ADDITION : Questions to address might include (but are not limited to) the following (you do not need to answer all of these questions take one as a starting point for your essay):

From watching the film, what do you find most striking about the connections between gender, sexuality and race in this period of American history?  Why?
What has your research added to your understanding of the linkages between gender, sexuality, and race in American history?
