Your assignment is to write a 4-5 page essay analyzing a historical film (not listed on the syllabus) about the conquest of the Americas. A list of suggested films has been posted on Canvas.

Focus your analysis on the following questions:

To what subgenre of the Historical Film genre (epic, war, biographical, topical, etc.) can the film be ascribed?
How does the film illustrate (or problematize) the basic components of the subgenre it represents?
How are historical figures and/or events portrayed in the film?
What fictional characters and/or situations can be identified? What is their purpose within the context of the narrative?
In which ways does the film claim historical authenticity?
What contemporary concerns are expressed through the reenactment of the past?

Then develop an argument about the way in which the film approaches history.

* You are not required to do any additional research for this paper. But you should draw upon some of the theories about the historical film that we have studied in class, testing them against your close reading of the film.

Tips

Avoid plot description. Aim instead to analyze how specific cinematic techniques function to underscore the films mode of historical thinking.
Organize your essay around key points in your argument, rather than a chronological examination of the film.
Be sure to use precise film terminology. (prop, performance, tracking shot, tilt, dissolve, jump-cut, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, etc.)
Avoid vague language. (The use of long-shots is very effective) Aim instead to analyze the specific effect of individual techniques. (Long-shots and well-choreographed crowd scenes convey a monumental vision of history.)

Thread Prompt:

Johnson states (2010), This book provides an opportunity to understand the intellectual crisis facing the church in the area surrounding psychology and counseling, and it does this by exploring five major positions evangelicals have taken regarding the relationship of psychology and the Christian faith (p. 38).  In this weeks reading of Psychology and Christianity: Five Views, Levels-of-Explanation View, Christian Psychology View, and a Biblical Counseling View are discussed.

Provide a brief overview of each view discussing the critiques each.
Even though all the models have not been discussed so far in the class, of the 3 presented this week, which one do you feel more closely aligned to how you view integration? What would you change or remove from this view to make it fit more closely to what you believe integration should look like? Use the text and scripture. You can also use the other class texts to help to connect the different conceptualizations of what integration looks like.

Reply: For your reply, respond to 1 classmates post who chose a different prompt than yourself, identifying at least 2 strengths and 2 weaknesses in his/her reasoning as well as 1 question that comes to mind based on that classmates post.

First Module: In Discussion 1 you identified the classifications of the Special Population students – classifying students according to the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Federal Law. In addition to these classifications, there are additional ones in the American Disabilities Act. For this module, combine the Carl D. Perkins classifications with the American Disabilities Act classifications and record definitions for each one. Write a 1-page conclusion describing how this information can benefit a CTE teacher. ONE PAGE IS NOT A SHORT PARAGRAPH; IT MUST BE NO MORE THAN ONE INCH TOP AND BOTTOM AND ONE-INCH MARGINS. YOU CAN DOUBLE SPACE.

2nd paper

Second Module: There are different teaching strategies/pedagogy that teachers use for different student learning styles and students with different abilities and disabilities. Regardless of the students ability to learn, a teacher should use the following resources to develop lesson plans: Learning Pyramid, Blooms Taxonomy. Search the internet for these two models. Graphically show both models and write a 2-page paper, your observation, of the models can be used to develop lesson plans that insure special population students will learn. TWO PAGES IS

NOT A SHORT PARAGRAPH, IT MUST BE NO MORE THAN ONE INCH TOP AND BOTTOM AND ONE-INCH MARGINS. YOU CAN DOUBLE SPACE

Select one of the four mindfulness based interventions we discussed in class (MBSR, MBCT, ACT, DBT)
Introduce and summarize the intervention:  Make sure to describe a) the theoretical underpinnings of the intervention, b) key components of the interventions including the target population, structure/delivery, c) form and extent of mindfulness based practices used in the intervention, d) additional difficulties/diagnoses this intervention may be effective for according to research.
Search the academic databases (beyond google scholar) and pick 2 research studies (including meta-analyses if these are available) that examine the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of the specific intervention you chose.*  Upload a copy of the selected articles with your submission
Summarize the research findings   Make sure to describe what was studied, target population, what type of control group was used, what was the research question, the measured variable/s, findings, and your own short critique of the study
Discuss the research findings in light of the proposed mechanisms of action articles we discussed in class:  What possible mechanisms of action are relevant with the intervention? How might they related to the intervention’s effectiveness with a particular population, or it’s lack of effectiveness?  Explain the connections. If none of the proposed mechanisms seem to fit suggest why that may be and propose your own theory about the mechanism of action relevant to these studies and interventions.  Make sure to demonstrate your understanding of mindfulness practice and its proposed mechanisms of action.
*Make sure you pick research that is of good quality, i.e.:

Published in a peer reviewed journal
Publishes in the past 7 years
Includes a control group
Reasonable sample size
Has interesting results

Critical thinking involves not just thinking, but thinking in a way that evaluates something. Evaluation can take different forms, but it basically boils down to placing a value on something. So, in thinking critically, you are figuring out whether or not it is true; accurate; clear; valid; good; etc. These are all forms of value judgments.

Before you can criticize anything, however, you have to understand what you are criticizing. If you dont, then your criticism doesnt apply. You cannot accurately criticize that which you do not understand.

Hence, this essay assignment is an exercise in understanding. In particular, this is an exercise in exposition. Well talk more about exposition in a later unit. For now, all you have to understand is that exposition is explaining and teaching. You are NOT summarizing. Exposition is helping someone understand what it is that youre expositing. So, in order to exposit something, you need to have a pretty good understanding of it. (Can you imagine having to teach something you dont understand?)

Short Essay Assignment

Watch the following short video lecture: Belief Holism, Consistency, and Rationality. If the link does not work, you can copy and past the URL: https://youtu.be/W5IeXE9YcS8 (its about 16 minutes long).

Next, answer the following three short essay questions:

1. Explain in your own words the video lecture. Explain in a way that you are telling and teaching a friend the contents of the video.
2. Everyone has had inconsistent views. You may have come to believe something that was inconsistent with what you previously believed. This might have made you change your beliefs. What were those views and how were they inconsistent? What did you do to resolve them?
3. Think of a time when someone held inconsistent views. This could be a friend, family member, a politician, a celebrity, etc. What were the inconsistent views and how were they inconsistent? What would be the best way to resolve the inconsistency?
