Epidemiology has evolved from tracking outbreaks caused by a virus or bacteria,
to investigating and determining other factors that make individuals and
populations more susceptible to illness and disease. The article, pdf attached,
by Michael Marmot, Social justice, epidemiology, and health inequalities
provides you with a starting point for beginning your research on this topic.
Below are two additional links from the National Academy of Medicine that
will provide you with additional information to begin expanding on the
topic. These links are provided with permission from the National Academy
of Medicine for you to read online or download as you deem necessary to
compete your research paper. I am required to use the two National Academy
of Medicine articles in my essay.

am required to find at least two other sources that discuss this topic. You
may include articles from the mainstream press, which include a wide
range of opinions on the topic, but be cognizant of that fact that the
media is not always based on factual information. At least one of your
sources should be a peer-reviewed academic or research article.
This essay should synthesize the information from all of your sources and
should demonstrate/answer the following:

1. How well do you understand the assigned reading and the other readings
that you found on this subject?
a. What are social determinants of health and what are some
examples?
b. What does health equity mean?

2. What are strategies that could address the perceived issue(s) based on
your research?

3. What changes in existing policies and programs at the state and national

5. What challenges do epidemiologists face in studying social determinants of
health?

I will be graded on how well I answer the questions 1-5 above, and expand on them when appropriate.
I will also be graded on readability (grammar, spelling, syntax) and overall
