Proposal Guidelines:

1) You must include a thesis statement (what your contextual analysis of the show you have chosen will tell us about the show), and a little bit about how you plan to make that argument (what your evidence is). Provide a bibliography of at least three sources, but include as many as you want.

2) You are not required to have academic sources, though you might want to have them for reference if you are talking about specific historical events or how other writers and scholars have viewed and reported those events. HOWEVER, if you are talking about things included in pieces of legislation, FCC documents, or something else, you do not need to refer to the textbook or a secondary source, you can (and should) cite that document itself as a primary source.

Write a one page proposal with thesis for the show Gossip Girl based on the requirement above, below is what I wanna talk about
“I found the business aspect of television very interesting, therefore for my final project I would like to dig into one show and analyze the commercial in it, how do they represent the economic and society back then, who are their targeted audience, and why would the production team choose certain brands to do commercial for and why would the companies choose the show to show their product to the viewers. I would like to choose shows like Gossip Girls which its targeted viewers are around my age, I feel like shows like this would be more relevant to my life and I would have a better understanding of it.”

5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font.

– At least 3 bibliographic items.

– References and comparison to 2 songs from the course slides.

One song from the list found below in this module will be examined and deconstructed in detail. The song must be from the provided list.

The paper should be no shorter than 5 pages (excluding bibliography) and must reference 2 other songs from the lecture slides.

These references are meant to draw a connection between the songs on the list all released within the last year and the historical material that is discussed in class.

If you would like to expand on your discourse from Paper 1 you may use the same 2 songs, however remember that self-plagiarism is still plagiarism and it may tricky to avoid.

The continued use of Stingin Like Tabasco is suggested, along with at least one other written reference from the course materials and one print resource of your own choosing.

If you are stuck for bibliographic materials , contact your TA or myself to point you in the right direction.

You may use Genius, Wikipedia, or any other online source if you want but they DO NOT COUNT as one of the above 3.  Genius is often unreliable and Wikipedia is a collection of sources – you are free to use them alongside the others but be sure to double-check anything that you take from there. Remember, as I said for the last paper, “wrong is wrong” and if you include wrong information, no matter where you retrieved it from, you will be penalized.

Deconstruct the song in terms of the parameters as on Paper 1 signification, flow, political content, etcbut locate it in terms of the other two songs.

The grading rubric will be similar to the Paper 1 rubric.

Some Things to Think About
Below are two opinions on Hip Hop from 20 years ago that serve as kinds of predictions. Since you are writing about Hip Hop from “now ” and comparing it to Hip Hop from “then”, read these and think about whether or not you agree.

If you would like to use Greg Tates article Hip Hop Turns Thirty” as a source, I encourage it or anything else from Flyboy 2 , but regardless, meditate on these two quotes from the article before you begin writing.

“What the heck are we celebrating exactly? A right and proper question, that one is, mate. One to which my best answer has been: Nothing less, my man, than the marriage of heaven and hell, of New World African ingenuity and that trick of the devil known as global hyper-capitalism. Hooray.”

“Well tell them how fools thought they were celebrating the 30th anniversary of hiphop..when they were really presiding over a funeral. Well tell them how once upon a time there was this marvelous art form where the Negro could finally say in public whatever was on his or her mind in rhyme and how the Negro hiphop artist, staring down minimum wage slavery, Iraq, or the freedom of the incarcerated chose to take his emancipated motor mouth and stuck it up a strippers ass because it turned out there really was gold in them thar hills.”

Likewise, for a different perspective, any chapter from Nelson Georges Hip Hop America, could be a wise source, but here is a quote from Chapter 16 the final lines of the book – to ruminate on before you begin writing.

“The truth is that hip hop in its many guises has reflected (and internalized) our society’s woes so evocatively that it has grown from minority expression to mainstream appreciation..This thing labeled hip hop has simply been in the middle of much, and nothing at the turn of the century has changed that. The allegiance of its true believers is deep and looks to be lifelong”

“The long-term direction of America, and hip hop’s role in it, will be decided by two very different factors. First, the state of America’s soul. Will a commitment to social justice, to nonpolarizingpolitics and old-fashioned community resurface? If so, such a humanist movement would certainly alter the culture, perhaps spawning a musical movement as optimistic as the golden days of Motown. Don’t hold your breath.”

“One day ..all this fun and fury will seem as antiquated as spats and big bands do to us. The next generation may reject hip hop for the next sweeping cultural trend. And, by the logic of pop culture, they are actually supposed to.  But, whether they like it or not, they’ll know there once was a hip hop America.”

Watch the play Pipeline Directed by
Lileana Blain-Cruz/Habib Azar

Here is a list of things to take note of and look for YOU MUST ADDRESS THESE
QUESTIONS IN YOUR PAPER.
1) What is the goal of the producers and creative team in bringing this
production to life for audiences to see? Does it speak to a specific age
group? What is the message or messages? What are some themes that run
through it and how can it impact our society and the audiences of today?
Basicallywhy does this play exist?
2) What technical element stood out to you the most? Lighting design?
Costume design? Scenic design? Sound design? Who was the designer and
why is the element that popped for you take precedent over the other
aspects?
3) Which actor(s) stood out as the strongest and the most connected to the
material? Choose at least 2 and go into great depth about their
performances and WHY you are choosing them.
4) Was this a cohesive production? Did all of the elements meet each other
well in the performance you witnessed (Acting, Directing, Design)? What
was absent (if anything?) or what could have used some adjustments?
These are just SOME things to look for and take note of. Of course, any other elements
or moments in the performance that you would like to highlight, is absolutely
acceptable.

REMINDER; this is a 2-3 page essay (12 pt font, double spaced) and ONLY 15% OF
THIS PAPER IS ALLOWED TO BE A SUMMARY OF THE SHOW. This is not a re-cap
essay of the plot of the show but rather a paper articulating your opinion on this artistic
process. IF YOU SPEND THE WHOLE PAPER TELLING ME WHAT HAPPENED IN THE
PLAY, IT WILL REFLECT IN YOUR GRADE.
In your essay, be as specific as possible. Point out a specific moment or scene in the
play (and between what characters) that backs up your opinion or critique. Watch the
play closely, and take notes (subtly) so that you remember important
moments/experiences afterwards.
When citing examples from the show, such as specific actors and the characters and/or
a specific design element, make sure to refer back to your program for the individual(s)
name. I will be looking for these examples in your essay so be clear.
For citing examples of actors/acting you may use these setups:
Polina Petrova, who played the role of Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
OR
The character of Willy Loman, played by Polina Petrova, in this production of
Death of a Salesman,.
AFTER CITING THE ACTOR (PLAYING THE CHARACTER) THE FIRST TIME, YOU CAN
THEN JUST REFER TO THE ACTOR BY LAST NAME THROUGHOUT THE REST OF THE
ESSAY.
For citing examples of designers/design you may use this setup:
The lighting design, by Polina Petrova, in this revival of A Streetcar Named
Desire, really stood out to me
When composing your review essay, I will look to see that you are following standard
college level essay writing. Spelling and grammar will be counted towards you
grade. One hint is that when referring to a play/musical title, please put it in italics. It
should NOT be underlined or in quotes.

For this assignment, you will study the evolution of a genre, in the way that we have been studying
the horror film in class. Working with two thematically linked films in your genre from different
periods and outside research from at least three sources to help you identify the genres history,
myths, conventions, and iconography, you will develop a thesis about the genre and how it works
across time and in an ever-changing culture. Your paper should consider how genre creates meaning
in these two films and how this reflects a larger argument about the genres relation to the culture in
which it is produced.
This is, first and foremost, a paper about genre. Your films are illustrative examples of the genre
within a historical/cultural context that will help you understand how and why it has changed over
time. They will also help limit your focus, as not every generic myth, convention, or icon will be
relevant to your films and your thesis. You are not simply discussing your films similarities and
differences. Your argument and analysis must demonstrate a historical understanding of the genre
and how your films work within the genre. You should examine the generic myths, conventions, and
iconography at work in the films, as well as the ways in which the style (or formal elements)
influence how audiences understand and interpret these various generic elements. For example:
How is the convention of the zombie different in a classical versus a modernist horror? How is this
difference indicative of the broader changes in the genre between the two periods?

250-350 word RC Response:

1st paragraph: What was your reaction to the article?

2nd paragraph: Identify a potential connection between the topic of the reading and a person, group, or movement of your choice.

Be sure to cite your work properly, including quotation marks and page numbers when adopting even short passages from the original text.
