Goal: The goal of this assignment is to compare a performance of Classical music to pop/rock music using musical terminology to express your ideas.

Course Objectives:

CO-1: Identify Western music by style and era.
CO-2: Apply musical terminology, concepts and critical listening skills to a given major composer and style of music.
CO-3: Analyze the social, political, and cultural influences on Western and non-Western music.
Description:

Choose an excerpt from two concerts, one of a pop or rock concert of your choice and one of a performance of music from the Classical Era (1750-1800 AD) chosen from the list below. Watch approximately 10 minutes of each concert. (Please note: The rock or pop concert you choose should be one you watch during this course, rather than a performance you watched or attended prior to the class.)

After viewing the concert excerpts, construct a comparison of these two concerts and address the following:

1. Explain why you did or did not enjoy the concerts.

2. Evaluate similarities and differences between music in the Classical era and rock/pop music. Be sure to reference specific musical attributes of the concerts, and use musical terminology and information from the course materials to express your ideas.

3. Discuss the types of people who attended concerts in the Classical era and those who attend rock or pop concerts today, and why people attended concerts in the Classical era versus today. (Be certain to use specific information from scholarly sources to support your points about concerts during the Classical era.)

4. Analyze how new technologies, such as digital media and the internet, change the ways music is experienced.

Classical Concert List

“Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

“Violin Concerto No. in D major,” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

“Symphony No. 25 in G minor” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

“Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major,” Franz Josef Haydn

“Piano Sonata, Op. 40, No. 2 in B minor,” Muzio Clementi

“Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major,” Ludwig van Beethoven

“Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major,” Ludwig van Beethoven

This paper should be 750-1000 words in length. This assignment should reflect knowledge and understanding of the course materials. Points should be supported by specific information from scholarly sources and musical terminology should be used to express ideas. This paper should be written in paragraph form using complete sentences with a clear introduction and conclusion. Be sure to reference both concerts in the introduction and conclusion.

In addition to these elements, please be sure to fulfill the Requirements for Writing Assignments (see below), including citing all sources (including the concerts) both in the body of the text and in a reference page. Please note that MLA is the standard citation style in the humanities. Here are some good sources of information for Evaluating Online Resources, Citing Sources, and Writing & Grammar Resources. The video links for the concerts should be cited in the body of the text and in your reference page.

EXD 101- Intro to Experience Design Final Project Guidelines

The Premise
Throughout the semester you have learned about Experience Design and how it can be used to educate, entertain, and engage audience from a variety of different demographics and cultural contexts. Now, it is your turn to be the designer!
Pulling from the theories, methodologies, and content that we have covered in this class, you are to design an experiential attraction (theme park ride, museum exhibit, escape room, experiential marketing campaign, themed restaurant, etc.) according to the following guidelines. This assignment is made up of two parts:
A verbal presentation during the Final Exam period.
A written portfolio to be turned in to the professor no later than the Final Exam period.

The Portfolio
There is no required length for the portfolio, but it needs to be clearly divided into the six sections listed below and should show a fully-developed original concept from the student. Please write in full sentences and use proper grammar when doing this assignment.

Section 1- Overview and Walkthrough
What type of XD space have you created?
What is the theme of your experience?
What is the goal or big idea of your experience? What sort of design aesthetics do you use to get the ideas across?
    Where is it located?
What are the microexperiences littered throughout the macroexperience?
Take the reader through the touchpoints of your experience
o    Cover in as much detail as you possibly can, from the second the guest walks in the door to the minute they leave.
Section 2- Demographic Research
Who is this experience designed for?
o    Is it tailored for a specific demographic, or are you going for mass appeal?
What kind of an audience are you trying to attract?
o    International?
o    Local?
o    Regional?
Would you have any competitors in the region? If so, who are they?
How do you plan to market your experience?

Section 3- Concept Visuals
Your portfolio and presentation must include some sort of concept visual for your experience. This can be achieved through:
o    Concept Art (hand-drawn or via computer graphics)
o    Mood Board
o    Scale Model
o    Sketchup/Vector Model
o    A physical prototype of something from your experience
o    Storyboards
o    An Experience Map
You may use any mixture of these visuals, and you may use as many as you want.
Simple pictures on a Powerpoint will not count towards this section
Section 4- What is Your Why, and How is it Unique?
In short, why does this experience exist? What is its main goal?
How is your experience different than similar ones that are currently in existence?
Section 5- Why Will Your Experience Be Successful?
Why do you think that your experience will resonate with people in the markets you have chose?
If the opportunity arose, would your experience be viable to expand? Why or why not?
How will you gauge success (other than pure profit margins)?
Section 6- Works Cited
Everything in Experience Design comes back to research. A great XDer once said Design without research is like trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle with your eyes closed.
o    Please include all sources you found while researching this project.
o    Sources need to be cited in proper format according to the style you are most comfortable with.
o    There is no required number of sources, but Im looking specifically at variety and reliability of those found.
The Presentation
You have the freedom to do your presentation in any style you wish. Things like standard slides and lecture, hands-on presentation, business pitch, or anything else you can think of will be accepted as long as it is presented during the last class period on Finals Week.
For the sake of brevity, please aim to make these presentations five minutes in length.

The Grade (25 Points Each)
    Originality of idea
    Depth of research and design
    Visuals and Presentation
Knowledge of theories, methods, and concepts talked about in class

Select two pieces per chapter from the playlists at the end of Chapters 11-13 (A total of 6 pieces will be described).

Chapter 11: Wasteful Authority
Chapter 12: Density
Chapter 13: Improvisation
Can you hear and understand these elements?
For each piece you describe, identify at least one other element from the themes of Chapters 1-10
Describe how and where you found these other discussed topics.
What was your general response/reaction to each piece?
DON’T FORGET: At the end of your Journal, discuss your overall listening process.

Where did you listen?
How many times did you listen to each piece (roughly)
Did listen straight through or did you stop and start and repeat sections?

How and who were MIDI sequencers started by and how they helped the development of creating and making music. Also describing how MIDI sequencers are used in the current music world. How did these sequencers change the way we make music and how fast it takes? How also now sequencers are made as online plugins instead of buying the physical instrument. I also want to share how sequencers have helped me make music. All in all, I want to share the past, present and future I predict for MIDI sequencers for music makers.

answers these questions according to the readings and the film-The Social Dilemma (Orlowski, 2020) on Netflix:
In her article, Gender, Sexuality and Social Media, Alice Marwick argues that:
Social media technologies like Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook and YouTube are spaces and tools that facilitate communication. Rather than presuming these technologies to be gender neutral, scholarship has demonstrated that information technologies can perpetuate norms of masculinity, business and engineering.

Discuss the points she makes in her piece to support this contention.

According to Theresa Senft and Safiya Umoja Noble, how is the concept of mis-interpellation significant in conversations about race in social media?
The film and readings for this week pinpoint many problems with digital media. Identify what you see as the two most significant takeaways from this material.

This paper is for digging deeper into the Topic(qipao(cheongsam) between the era of 1930- 1940)

FOCUS ON ONE POINT TO WRITE.such as : Material (Fabric )/ construction(fix and style )/textile,coloror embroidery??/ etc.

What can you tell me about that garment that enhances my understanding of it?  the paper will require to look at books and articles on that fashion item and they must be scholarly sources.

Do not use Wikipedia as it is not scholarly!!!

The paper only has to be 2 pages (of written text. (A FULL 2 PAGE=2x 22= 44 lines of the main text.) times new roman, size 12

it must follow the correct research paper protocol with footnotes (MLA or Chicago style). The 3rd page must be the bibliography.

MAXIMUM quotes from the reading: no more than 5 lines.

Choose a work of art in the world in which you live, defined in whatever way you prefer, and, in no fewer than 750 words, first carefully describe it so as to identify its thematic content and then situate it within the network of social relations and historical conditions you see giving shape to its meaning. Please attach one or more reproductions of the artwork at the end of your essay. (These reproductions do not count in calculating the length of your completed work, however. Respect the required word count indicated in the first paragraph, above.)

Keep in mind that you are NOT being asked to offer your opinion of the work youve chosen to discuss; youre being asked to reason historically from visual evidence.

Be sure the text you turn in is more than a series of observations but an accomplished paper one that begins with an introductory claim, develops through a series of paragraphs with smooth and logical transitions, and concludes in a fashion that accords both with your defining claim and title.

Is making art out of issues raised by globalization socially useful, neutral, or counter-productive? In what ways? How might Burtynskys documents and/or Cole’s or Luttringer’s alter the way the viewer thinks about globalization? Use a minimum of 12 photographs, 4 from each of the three photographers to discuss in detail and to support the points you make in your essay.
