Based on the video above, Part 1 of Jazz, by Ken Burns, answer these questions.

1. What is one new or surprising thing you learned from the video? (A one sentence answer is fine.)

2. Prepare an essay describing the historical and cultural conditions and events that led to the development of jazz in New Orleans in the early 20th century (as depicted in the video). How did these conditions/events lead to the particular musical characteristics of jazz?

Your essay should be about one page in length, (including your short answer to question #1), and should use good English structure and correct spelling. The assignment is worth 10 points.

FOR VIDEO:

This video is from the longer series, JAZZ, done by Ken Burns.  The first episode, Gumbo, gives the background of jazz, and shows the cultural mix that existed in New Orleans that made the development of the music possible.  Although the music didn’t really develop until the beginning of the 20th century, the video begins before the Civil War, when the various cultures began to settle in New Orleans.  “Gumbo” is a thick soup containing a mix of various meats and seafoods, rice, and vegetables.  This is a metaphor for the mix of cultures that existed side by side in the city.

The video is 86 minutes long, and may take some time to load.  So wait, even if it takes several minutes, and even if it doesn’t seem to be doing anything.

To view the video, go directly to the library’s homepage, which is

http://www.laspositascollege.edu/library/index.php

Then click on the link Audio, Video, Image in the first column, which will bring you to another page where you can click directly on American History in Video.
At that point, you will need to login with your W number and PIN.

And here is the link to American History in Video that will allow you to login in remotely:

http://lpc1.laspositascollege.edu:2048/login?url=http://search.alexanderstreet.com/history

You  will then be required to login with your W number and PIN. You  can then search videos by title.

(I can provide login )

it’s going to be an application for my honor thesis, my topic is “Through Alice in borderland: difference between western and oriental thriller”, it is going to be a research based thesis with a supplement video if applicable. the reason i chose it its because i am asian and am studying western films, so i wish to learn the difference between the two both culturally and aesthetically. and for the extension of my current course work just say something like learning about alfred hitchcock I am more interested in suspense and thriller films, also learning about american tv and film history made me more interested in research into asian medias and how those two relates with each other, how does western culture effect asian media and vice versa. and for the A preliminary bibliography and/or filmography for the project, do some research and list around 5-6 sources includes both papers and films/tv shows. (i’ll write question 4,5,6 so don’t worry about those.)

Everything you need for the Film Worksheet is in the worksheet, itself, but here is additional information:

The Film Worksheet assignment is similar to the Art Worksheet, except that you will have more to keep track of — sound effects, moving images, and a plot with characters. I recommend looking over the film worksheet before you go to the theater and make notes afterward. You will be surprised at how much you remember.

SELECTING A FILM
When you select a film to see, you will find that the Internet has some helpful websites that list all films in American theaters, along with their reviews and cast credits. This semester Im providing you with links to a few of these websites, instead of a list of specific titles. So, your job is to carefully pick a film to see.

Look for films that you think have enough of a plot and technical aspects to write about in a balanced discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the film. Chances are the films that interest you, because you know something about the topic, will be films you can write about intelligently.

Here are a few of the websites the websites:

Internet Movie Database (IMDb)

Please write a 2-page essay analysis (1000 words) on an indigenous curator that you think is doing important work. Describe one or two exhibitions they have curated and the arguments they developed and the type of work and artists that were exhibited.

Your paper must be supported by two quality research sources. These sources must be annotated. Your conclusion should include some critical reflection related to issues of diversity, equity and decolonization towards indigenous empowerment.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe Written Assignment (1 of 2)
Shout, Sister Shout by Gayle Wald, questions about Chapters 1-4

1.    In Chapter 1, author Gayle Wald describes aspects of Sister Rosettas background and her hometown of Cotton Plant, Arkansas. In weeks 2-3 of this class you learned a great deal about the hometown of Florence Price, who grew up nearby in Little Rock and was roughly the same age as Katie Bell, Sister Rosettas mother. What parallels can you draw between what you learned about Florences world in Little Rock and life in Cotton Plant at roughly the same time? (Please write 150 words, min.)

2.    Chapters 1-2 describes the particular religious denomination in which Sister Rosetta was raised. What was this denomination called, what were its distinctive characteristics/origins, and in what ways, according to the author, did the church provide Rosettas earliest musical template, the sound palette on which she would draw throughout her career? (p.10) (Please write 200 words, min.)

3.    Chapters 3-4 describes Tharpes move to New York, success at the Cotton Club, Caf Society, Savoy Ballroom, and a moment of virtual overnight celebrity at a concert called From Spirituals to Swing at Carnegie Hall. For this question, go listen to a live recording from 1938 of this event. Listen to Thats All and Rock Me (these start at 41:05/tracks #17-18 on the video). For an interesting comparison you can also listen to her commercial recording of “Rock Me” from earlier that year, and the big band/swing version of the same song she recorded with Lucky Millinder soon after. What does Wald have to say in Chapters 3-4 about why Tharpes musical style and stage persona was so appealing at this particular moment in time? (Please write 200 words, min,)

Sister Rosetta Tharpe Written Assignment (2 of 2)
Shout, Sister Shout by Gayle Wald, questions about Chapters 5-7 and epilogue

1.    Chapter 5 is about the musical partnership between Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight. Crank up the songs Up Above my Head https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-Jr-W6A5rs and Didnt it Rain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJLSbDPqfCE  and reflect on what you learned about this relationship from this chapter. (100 words, min.)

2.    Chapters 6-7 discuss (among other things) Rosettas life on the road as a touring musician, constantly hustling in service of her career. What did you learn about that aspect of her lifestyle? (100 words, min.)

3. At certain points throughout the excerpts of this book, Wald shows how Rosetta Tharpe was sometimes uncomfortable moving between the world of black sacred music (gospel) and the secular (and often white dominated) spaces of popular music. Looking back on the chapters youve read, what moments caused ambivalence or discomfort for Rosetta, and what are your thoughts more generally about how religious and secular music mix in the marketplace, and how race might potentially complicate this? (200 words, min.)
