WRITING ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:

After completing the readings and reviewing the resources for this week, develop a definition of public health including the difference between public health and medicine. In addition, select one global, national, or state public health agency (as identified in readings or local to where you live), and identify the following: the service(s) they provide, any connection to the U.S.  health care delivery system (if applicable), and which of the 10 Essential Public Health Services the organization performs (may be more than 1).
This assignment should be completed in APA format and include 2-3 peer-reviewed journal articles as references. Publication dates for articles should be within the last 6 years .

Using a coin toss, you will determine the facial traits of a potential child.  The expression of your traits is driven by the combination of alleles that you inherited from your parents.  The inheritance of these alleles from your parents is random.  For example, your Mom’s sex chromosomes are XX. Your Dad’s are XY. Upon fertilization, Mom contributed one of these X chromosomes randomly (the only choice she had!)  Dad contributed either X or Y randomly.  If you are a female you inherited your Dads X chromosome.  If you are a male then you inherited your Dads Y chromosome.  Because parents only have two alleles to contribute and they will be sorted randomly, we can observe how alleles are passed on randomly (50/50 chance) and how the combination of alleles determines physical traits using a simple coin toss.

1. Make sure that you have read the assigned text reading and the module notes before beginning this activity.

2. Follow the instructions on the Traits WorksheetPreview the document [DOC, File Size 43 KB]

3. You will need two coins to complete this activity.

4.Using the Traits Worksheet, complete the table and submit your work in the appropriate dropbox.

Throughout this course you will be learning how our genes shape what we look like, how they influence behaviors and how mutations can cause diseases. But is this all we are? Lets consider a complex issue to get things rolling: smoking. We all have nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in our brains. These receptors, located on our neurons (cells in the nervous system) bind the naturally-released neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. They also bind, as the name implies, the drug nicotine. Variants of a gene called CYP2A6 are associated with the speed at which a person metabolizes nicotine. A fast-metabolizer smokes more. Can we predict which individuals might respond to specific smoking cessation medications using this information? How can we test this? Is it only our genes that mandate the addiction? Can we just blame our genes? Is it ethical to offer only some individuals medication? For this discussion, you will read some articles and begin to analyze the data supporting evidence for the gene and behavior. Try not to use personal experience, but instead approach this subject as an objective scientist gathering and critiquing the data.

Since we cannot always use human subjects, for ethical reasons, to study genes and behavior, animal models often give us a close look into cellular and molecular mechanisms. Think about all the similarities between humans and other organisms, not just the differences. For example, fruit flies have brains, eyes and muscles. They walk, mate, eat, and sleep. Both organisms are made of cells, organs and organ systems. Certainly there are similar genes and proteins that drive their development and behaviors. Nevertheless, we are not exactly the same. Keep this in mind as you participate in discussions and as you proceed throughout the course.

Begin thinking about a topic and audience for your Teaching Project assignment. The submission of the topic and audience are due week 2. Submit your health topic and the expected audience (peers/patients/community group) and consider the age range of participants. For example: if your topic is “Crutch walking for the Hip Replacement patient,” focus on the 50- 90 aged participant. You will need to consider age-specific considerations when developing your lesson.

Teaching Project Assignment (due week 6):

The Teaching Project is an individual project.  Each of you will identify either patients, peers, or a community group on which to focus. Your topic and audience must be approved by me no later than by week 2.  Incorporate content that is reflective of learning principles and cultural influences that impact learning supported by current professional sources. The teaching project is worth 30% of the course grade. The entire project consists of 2 parts: The Lesson Plan (template fully completed) & the Reflective Narrative. The following must be included in the lesson plan:

Goal of the teaching session
Measurable behavioral objectives containing all components (ABCD Method)
Content outline
Reasonable time frames (identify contextual factors related to time frames: privacy, space, interruptions, time, culture, limits, etc.)
Resources used
Methods of teaching
Tools for teaching
Evaluation of learning methods
Please make sure that there is continuity of all components.

Attach a reflective narrative (MS Word document) that documents your attention to adult learning principles, cultural factors, and contextual factors.

References other than your text are expected. You are expected to use citations within the body of your narrative document as well as the lesson plan.

A separate reference page that includes all references used within the project must be included.

The narrative and references are to be in APA format (Links to an external site.).

Please submit a proposed teaching topic and audience by Wednesday at 11:59PM via this assignment link in a MS Word document. The topic and audience must be approved prior to the development of your 3 behavioral objectives which are due this week by Sunday at 11:59PM. Therefore, it is imperative that your topic and audience are submitted in a timely manner, so please plan appropriately.

Week 1 DB: Barriers to Effective Teaching

Consider when you may need to fill the role of educator while caring for your patients. What are the three (3) greatest barriers (other than time) to effective teaching in any type of healthcare setting (or yours specifically if you are currently practicing in healthcare)? What strategies do you recommend to overcome these indicated barriers?

Here are some barriers noted by health educators.  Please feel free to use three of these or any other that impacts your role as educator.

Lack of: teaching tools; new scientific sources; good education environment; tendency for patient leaning; common language and culture for communication
Existence of: shame for learning; anxiety; frequent shift rotation

WRITE A RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING POST:

Over the course of history researchers have studied the health care industry to determine plausible advantages or disadvantages of managed care and its policy. Said research has helped the community to understand segmentation, managed care, and their relationship. Managed care positively influences the health care industry by offering consumers a broad array of services, promoting organizational advancement (Elrod & Fortenberry, 2018), and reducing the risk of liability. Managed care protects both consumers and the health care industry by ensuring quality of patient care and adequate medical treatment to consumers. Managed care improves access to services and ensures affordable costs to consumers.

Historically, the health care industry developed plans considering the needs of employers with no consideration to the needs of consumers. Once the plans were developed, the health care industry used marketing strategies to sell said plans to employers (Tootelian, Mikhailitchenko, Holst, & Gaedeke, 2016). Consumers were forced to choose a plan regardless of the cost or benefit.

The health care industry has now changed tailoring plans to benefit the consumer and giving consumers freedom of choice. Consumers have become involved in their treatment, health care options, and empowered to select managed care plans that satisfy their needs (Tootelian et al., 2016). Employers still have the ability to select managed care plans offered to their employees but the health care industry is now forced to create managed care plans that appeal to both employees and employers (Tootelian et al., 2016). The health care industry has changed significantly for consumers affording them the possibility to choose a health plan that satisfies their needs.

1.Why might a biologist be interested in comparing the amino acid sequence of proteins between two different species?  What differences might she find when comparing species that are distantly related or closely related?  Explain.
2.Trans-fatty acids are a type of unsaturated fat.  Most trans-fats consumed today are industrially created as a side effect of partial hydrogenation of plant oils (Crisco).  In trans-fat molecules, the hydrogens on the doubly bonded carbon atoms (characteristic of all unsaturated fats) are straighter, rather than kinked, in shape.  This straightening produces an unnatural molecule.  Why do you think trans-fats are considered unhealthy as compared to other unsaturated fats?  Can you explain your answer chemically?
3.Most adult humans lose the ability to digest dairy products, a condition known as lactose-intolerance because of an inactivity of the lactase enzyme for digestion. However, there is a high degree of lactose tolerant people who are from northern European descent.  How can you explain lactose tolerance from a chemical perspective and why would there be a greater frequency from northern Europe?
4.Epulos, a bacterium growing in the gut of tropical surgeon fish can reach the size of 500 micrometers.  How does this compare to other bacteria and what problems does this present the epulos?  What are some ways that a cell this size could alter its structure to survive?
