1. Think about a park, conservation area or open space that you visited in the past. Reflect on why you visited and what features of the site most interested you. What specific ecological values did the site have in meeting the needs of human society? (the park will be Central)
2.Congratulations on making it to the end of the course! We hope you have discovered more about the world around you. What was the most surprising thing you learned in this course? What is one thing you learned in this course that can be applied to your life right now? Was there any material that you struggled with? How would you explain climate change to a family member? What would be the hardest part to explain?
After watching the movie, The Story of Plastic (link on the class web site), answer three of the
following seven questions. Each answer must be at least 250 words long. While you can include
your opinion, your answers should be primarily fact-based, drawing on the content of the movie
and material in readings. You may (but are not obligated to) refer to outside sources (e.g. a
newspaper story youve read).
1. The movie opens with the quotation, The future of plastics is in the trash can. What does
this quotation mean?
2. Who are the stakeholders, or claims-makers (revisit the Hansen reading from 9/14 for a
reminder) when it comes to the issue of plastic waste? What claims is each of them making?
3. What role does the fracking boom play in the growth of plastics?
4. Only 2% of plastic is effectively recycled. What does that mean? What happens to the other
98%? Why? What are the consequences of this?
5. At a recycling center in India, one of the interviewees says, The entire economy around
recycling is possible because we have poverty. What does this quote mean?
6. What obligations do plastic producers have to deal with the disposal phase of plastic?
7. Carroll Muffett, with the Center for International Environmental Law, says To a far greater
extent than in any other product chain, plastics are driven not by the demand for them but by
the supply. Explain what he means by that.
In this assignment, you will select a specific environmental problem of your choice and write a research paper using the Iceberg Model as a framework. Include in your paper the four basic levels to situations (i.e., events, patterns, structures, and models).
Your paper must be between 1,500 to 1,800 words not including a cover page or references and double-spaced (5 points) and must include a labeled Iceberg Model diagram (10 points) (you can use a PPT slide to draw it, save as an .JPG and insert it into your written report. You should fully describe the environmental issue complete with references (20 points) and a description of the four iceberg models (10 points). Include a conclusion where you consider potential sustainable solutions (5 points). I have given you several potential references to identify global problems so you can use any and all of them as references if they apply. You should have between 3 and 5 references for this assignment.

Find a minimum of 5 sources that relate to any one of the above topics (Coastal Erosion) These articles must be from textbooks, newspapers, journals, or the Internet (see below). Use the information in these articles to write your paper. In your paper, discuss briefly the main issue or concept involved; what ideas, solutions, or input to this topic you have; and how this topic relates to you. If space permits, mention what you found that was particularly interesting.
MUST USE THESE TWO SOURCES OUT OF THE 5: https://www.nps.gov/articles/coastal-processes-erosion.htm (Links to an external site.)

Population Pyramid Assessment
Assignment
MID-TERM PAPER
Research activity
Select one country and assess its population pyramids for this year, and 20 years before and after. Take screenshots of the pyramids to include in your essay. Use those pyramids to assess and reflect on “Population pyramids: Powerful predictors of the future” regarding changes and shifts in your country’s population and the potential for overpopulation. Consider which stage of the demographic transition your country is in. Additionally, you are also required one outside source that addresses birth rate, death rate, life expectancy or migration rate for your selected country.
Items you should note:
The population pyramids and their shape, compared to Figures 3.18 and 3.19 (73-74)
A discussion of demographic transition for your country
A discussion of an additional population statistic from an outside source.
Be sure to record correctly formatted citations for each source you access.
Writing Activity
Using your acquired outside sources and textbook, construct a cited essay of 500-750 words that describes the potential for overpopulation for your country using the data and ideas you have gathered and assessed. Your researched information should be cited, and quoted material should not exceed 15% of the paper.
In 2-3 paragraphs, describe thoroughly, clearly, and in detail the pattern of changes easily visible in the apparent position and motion of the Sun in the sky over the course of a year, as observed by ancient astronomers and discussed in our class.
The short answer response will be graded based on its content and thoroughness (60%), the clarity and accuracy of your response (20%), and the use of details , evidence, and examples (20%). For example, if your writing is generally correct, but vague (“Astronomers figured out that the Earth orbits the Sun”), then you may lose points for details and example (When did that happen? Who was involved? What was the evidence?). You should also remember to stay focused and answer the questions; essays that do not directly address the questions given in the prompt–including long essays that wander off topic– will lose points for clarity and accuracy.
One of the key starting points for understanding environmental movements of the past, present, and future is making sense of how we think and talk about nature.
1) In the topic of your post, name an environmental issue you are interested in.
2) Then, post a paragraph (~200 words):
– why this issue is interesting to you, and how you are involved in it (can range from simply learning/reading about it to organizing protests about it)
– connect it to the readings with citations (Author, Date)
3) respond to at least 2 of your classmates, drawing connections to other issues you see posted, relevant readings, current events, etc. (i.e. don’t just say “that’s interesting!,” bring something to the conversation)
This is the classmate discussion post which I want you to respond:
Fires in Southern California
Living in Southern California has exposed me to multiple fires throughout my lifetime that have threatened my, along with countless others, safety and sense of security. For many, the frequency of these wildfires is alarming and is cause for concern, and rightly so. The issue of the increase in impact of wildfires in Southern California is interesting and pertinent to me, not only because it is one that is close to home, but also because it is an indicator of a much larger problem that we face today: climate change. According to the US Forest Service, the chaparral ecosystem is well-equipped and adapted to recover from fires, and fire can actually be an integral component in the regeneration of the species residing there. However, the increased frequency and intensity that has been observed in recent years is counterproductive to growth, which makes it a topic of interest among scientists. My involvement in this issue has been limited to reading about it in the news and in papers. In addition, while taking a class in Conservation Biology, Dr. Jon Keeley delivered a lecture about the ecological impacts of wildfires in different regions of California. I was reminded of this lecture after reading the introduction of Uncommon Ground, in which the author writes about the prominent wildfires that could be seen from Irvine as scientists convened to discuss the manipulation of ecosystems and the definition of nature (Cronon, 1996). This essay caused me to think about how these issues extend through time, and although scientists have been privy to human degradation of the environment and its implications, it continues to persist today.
A literature review is a synthesis of chosen evidence and resources on a topic of interest. Your assignment is to select a topic of interest and complete a literature review. You are expected to select a minimum of 5 articles. Your review should be between 6-8 pages (not including title and reference page). It is imperative that APA (6th edition) formatting is utilized.
Essential Steps of the Literature Review:
Define the research problem/topic
Determine key terms
Select primary sources of evidence
Read and synthesize evidence
Write a synthesis of findings that compares and contrasts findings
Components of a Literature Review
Introduction
The introduction serves the purpose of presenting the problem and briefly explaining the significance of the topic. You should also share your search strategy with the reader.
Body of Literature Review
The body synthesizes the findings from the studies reviewed. You will first complete an annotated bibliography of each reference. For each study, you should briefly explain the purpose, procedures for data collection, and major findings. Be sure to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each study.
Discussion
The discussion section is your opportunity to compare and contrast the evidence you reviewed. How is one better than the other? How do studies compare or contrast with each other? This is where you draw conclusions based on the available literature.
Reference Page
List all sources utilized to complete the literature review. If it is cited in the body of your writing it should be listed in the reference list. APA 6th edition should be strictly adhered to. Utilize the Writing Center if needed http://student.barry.edu/writingcenter/
