This is the Discussion Board for the Chicago: City of the Century video.
The Question:

While native-born Chicagoans came to tolerate the Germans, what group retained their contempt and why?  Explain how and why this group’s experience may be comparable to other groups who have arrived more recently to the United States.
1.    How was this group perceived and treated?
2.    What did the editor of the Chicago Tribune suggest should be done with them?
3.    In your own words, define and provide an example of a social construct.

This review will be on a documentary video about volcanoes that you watch at home. I want your personal opinion of the video. Use the knowledge that you have gained from your studies about volcanoes to construct a reasonable critique (pro or con is fine) of the video. Any documentary is fine as long as it is compatible with the theme of volcanoes and is at least 30 minutes long. Reviews should consist of between 750 and 1000 words. You can watch documentaries on television, Netflix, YouTube, websites, or any other source that you can find. Feel free to be as creative as you like. Reviews will be submitted via the “Assignment” section (formally Dropbox) of BlazeVIEW. Read the movie review guidelines that are posted in the Class Documents section in the Content area in BlazeVIEW. Late reviews will be docked 10 points.

All movie reviews must include the following information at the top of the review:

1.  The name of documentary (first 6 reviews)
2.  Medium used to view film (History Channel, DVD rental, Netflix, YouTube)
3.  Approximate length of film
4.  Classmates who watched with you (this is absolutely OK, feel free to organize viewing parties)
5.  Your star ranking for the film (out of a total possible 5 stars)

Students will be asked to research, prepare, and produce a Regional Report on a particular area or region of the world. It needs to include specific references and analysis of the region, including (but not limited to): regions culture, economy, politics, important features (physical and man-made), etc. The report must critically address the area or regions unique community in terms of identity, legacy, and cultural heritage

For many years, humans have suggested a correlation between physical characteristics such as skin and hair color, with complex human traits, such as intelligence. This video refers to this as concordance and argues that if race is more than skin deep, then such visual traits must correspond to other human genetics.  This idea of concordance resulted in expectations by student subjects in the study shown.

What were their expectations and what did the study results show?
Why do you think this was so?
How does this relate to the American perception that race is biological?
What did these students learn about genetic variation within the so-called races compared to the genetic variations between the so-called races?
