This midterm exam is focused on the Mexican-American War. This conflict not only destroyed the lives of many US and Mexican families, but transformed both of the nations involved. A new border was drawn, political sovereignty was restructured, and the US extended its frontier once again, while Mexico lost a massive amount of territory. Write an essay addressing both parts of the question below:
1) What were the causes of the Mexican-American War. 2) How did the internal political contexts of both Mexico and the US shape the march to war and its outcome?

Essay Topic
Analyze how changing values and advertising led to the 1929 crash and Great Depression mentioned by Payne in Crash! To support your analysis, use information from at least two chapters in Crash!, information from the class textbook, and one primary source image.

Because images can be used to shape public opinion, one paragraph in your essay should analyze a primary source photograph or print advertisement related to the focus of your essay. For example, on page nineteen in Crash! there is a picture of a World War I buy-bonds advertisement, on page forty-one there is an automobile ad, and on page 110 there is a photograph of National Recovery Administration (NRA) supporters. One of your essay paragraphs should be devoted to analyzing one image you find on your own. Using images found in The American Yawp or Crash! will cost you some points on the essay; find your own image to analyze.

The essay should be 1,000 words long including quotations but excluding citations, heading, bibliography, works cited, and other such auxiliary information.

Organization
An organized essay should have an:

Introduction paragraph
First body paragraph
Second body paragraph
Third body paragraph
Conclusion paragraph
Make sure the introduction paragraph has a thesis sentence. The essay should smoothly transition from one idea to the next. Each paragraph should focus on one point or source with the goal of having the essay as a whole supporting your thesis.

Please follow this basic formatting information:

Single space the essay
Use a standard font and type size (12-point font and Arial or Times New Roman)
Use black type
Avoid bold or other highlighted forms of type
Avoid bullet or numbered lists in a short essay like the ones assigned in this class.
No heading, works cited page, nor bibliography is required. Canvas will automatically state all the information in a typical heading (name, date, course). Since you will only be using the assigned sources in the essay, no works cited nor bibliography page is required.

Direct Quotes
Use direct quotes, but use direct quotes sparingly. Avoid using long quotes or block quotes in short essays like the ones in this class. Direct quotes should not be used just to extend the length of the paper; direct quotes should be used because they are the best way to support, reinforce, the point you are making in your paragraph or essay. Make sure to cite your information as shown in the instructions below.

A few short direct quotes may be helpful, but in most cases, answer in your own words; however, still cite specific information even if it is not in the form of a direct quote.

Outside (Additional) Sources
Base your essay only on the assigned readings. However tempting it may be, do not use sources that are not assigned. The assigned sources have more than enough information to complete each written assignment.

Citations
It is very important to cite information in your essays as shown in these instructions.

Cite all the specific information used in essays. Cite all specific information. Of course, cite direct quotes. Also cite specific information even if the information is not in a direct quote. Again, make sure to cite specific information, even if not in direct quotes, used in an essay.

Cite your information in the body of the essay at the end of sentences. Avoid endnotes or footnotes. Cite your information in the following ways.

What type of primary source is the source you selected? (Is it a diary excerpt, a treaty, a letter, a speech, etc.?)
Who produced the source?
When was written?
Why was the source written?
What questions does this source raise?
What is the author’s frame of reference.  (Think about this one a bit.  What is the author’s worldview or perspective.  What is it about the author that makes him/her think the way that do? Perhaps, the author possesses biases?  And what are the implications of that frame of reference? *Frame of a reference is a world view or a bias.  Everyone has one. Many factors shape frame of reference such as gender, culture, socio-economic status, race, upbringing, life experiences, etc.
Why is this source significant?

Select a building from the list below and analyze its design in terms of its larger social, material and environmental contexts. Draw from the lectures and two of the assigned readings to help you describe the transformation of modern architecture at mid-century within the larger intellectual framework of architectural notions of regionalism. In other words, use the readings to help you explain how your building is an illustration of a modernist notion of regionalism, and discuss your building in terms of design characteristics, such as the buildings form, materiality, spatial organization, and structure, as they relate to climate,  local (sustainable) building materials and construction techniques, social living patterns, and cultural traditions and influences. Your analysis should be interpretive, as well as critical, and should include at least six images, carefully selected to demonstrate your major points.

I wanted to remind you that your essay on The Souls of Black Folk is due this Friday, October 16. Be sure to answer the essay question as specifically as possible.  You need to focus on what DuBois says about the “value and purpose of education” for black people.  Do not provide general information about who DuBois was and what else he did during his career.  Use your 3-4 pages (typed, double spaced) to explain his main ideas about education.  Use only the book for your source of information.

W.E.B. DuBoiss The Souls of Black Folk is a landmark work of American literature. DuBoiss collection of essays, published in 1903, document the plight of black Americans and advance an argument for how black Americans might cross the veil that divides them from white America. Over the span of the twentieth century, DuBoiss vision for black Americans advancement became the dominant perspective for racial equality.

For your essay assignment, I want you to explain how DuBois envisioned the value and purpose of education for black Americans.  Be sure to explain how his perspectives on education differed from those of Booker T. Washington.  Be as specific as possible in explaining the various dimensions of how and why he believed education was central to blacks achievement of equality.

Please note: do not use any other source for this essay assignment other than The Souls of Black Folk.  If you quote from the book, and please do so sparingly and only when absolutely necessary, indicate the page number in parentheses following the quoted material.

Your introduction should be succinct and highlight the main perspectives on education you will discuss. Your conclusion should briefly reiterate the educational issues you have explained.

Please write a research paper built on the concepts from the Research Proposal provided.
– Times New Roman
– 12 Font
– Include a table of contents
– Identify headings such as Introduction, Research question, purpose statement, research methodology.
– Please use scholarly and credible references; books, peer-reviewed journals or articles for referencing

1. A reflection paper is your identification of the main themes of the readings integrated with your classroom experience and how both affect your thinking and practice.
2. A reflection paper is your chance to add your thoughts and analysis to what you have read and experienced. It is meant to illustrate your understanding of the material and how it affects your ideas.
3. Unlike research papers, reflection papers are written in a less formal style, with the author’s ideas and perspective being the focus of the essay. To substantiate these ideas, you must also incorporate supporting evidence from the article you have chosen and/or outside sources into your reflection paper.
3. Begin by jotting down some of the reading material and class experiences that stand out in your mind. Decide why they stand out to you.
4. Using the first person singular (I), relate the readings and classes to your previous knowledge and experience and consider if and how what you have read and learned changes your thinking on the particular topic. How so?
5. In your first two paragraphs, you must identify the readingss that you will be reflecting on (state name of authors and title of readings). Briefly discuss the subject of the articles and talk about your preconceptions of the subject, as well as a brief summary of your initial reaction.
6. In the body of the essay, you can discuss the articles one at a time. You can discuss the first article and then in your discussion of the second, make connections or engage with the first article. Or, you can choose to discuss 2 to 3 main points that are made in both articles that are similar or maybe they are different arguments. What do you agree/disagree with? You can make links with your own personal lives, events in your communities, events in the news etc. You can also draw on a class film/documentary. Remember, a good compare/contrast essay doesn’t only point out how the subjects are similar or different (or even both!). It uses those points to make a meaningful argument about the subjects.
7. As you conclude your essay, discuss what you learned from the readings? What questions did the readings raise? What are the implications of what you have read?
8. If you include any other articles, please cite them. Include in-text references and a reference page for any materials you cite using APA or Chicago Manual of Style citation formatting.
