The Welsh abdominal aortic aneurysm screening programme (WAAASP) in UK invites all men aged 65 to have an abdominal ultrasound scan performed at one visit to a screening centre.
The programme employs technicians that only perform this type of scan. There are normally 3 or 4 technicians at each screening centre, there are 3 separate screening technician teams, one each for North Wales, South West and South East Wales. All the teams move around different centres within each region.
The measurement value used to determine whether an aneurysm is present or not is 3cm.
3cm or above on the scan means that you have an aneurysm and that you will have regular scans from then on, or referral to a vascular surgeon if the aneurysm is 5.5cm or larger.
Under 3cm means no further scans are required.
Using appropriate vocabulary and terminology, describe what type of variations in measurements may occur when using ultrasound scans to screen a population for abdominal aortic aneurysms and how these variations may be predicted and dealt with. (70% x total marks)
Discuss the implications of the programme on individuals having the scan. (30% x total marks)

Pick a disease affecting one of the body regions we have discussed.
Decide on a title for your essay that addresses a question relating to this disease.
Explain the anatomy and histology of the area in both health and disease, and use your explanation as the basis for answering your question.
Address the following concerns as an integral part of your essay

How much do we understand about the causes and effects of this particular disease?
How could we improve our knowledge?
What specific information would we acquire about the disease from using different investigative methods?

Guidelines:
This essay should follow the normal essay structure-
Title, introduction, essay body and conclusion.

The body of the essay is in two sections-
30-40% gross anatomical and histological description of structure and function, normal and diseased:
Give a detailed description of the gross and histological anatomy of the organ. Include relevant developmental information, innervation and vasculature in your description. Use your anatomical/histological description to explain the function and dysfunction of the organ. Explain how the changes in micro and macro structure are associated with the changes in function experienced by the patient.
Use appropriate images/illustrations in your description. You may use images from Creative Commons which you then add labels to yourself. All images must be accurately cited.
60-70% discussion of questions:
Use appropriate images/illustrations in your explanation. You may use images from Creative Commons which you then add labels to yourself. All images must be accurately cited.
How much do we understand the causes and effects of this particular disease?
Answer this using a literature review
What specific information would we acquire about the disease from using different investigative methods?
Critically analyse, compare and contrast the different methods used in 3 disparate studies which are all addressing a similar question. What type of information is gathered through each method? What aspects of the question do these methods answer?
How could we improve our knowledge?
Based on your analysis of how the different types of methodology used in each of the studies you have included in your comparative study, extrapolate at least one logical next step in the investigation of this disease.

N.B. You will need to go beyond the material covered in the anatomy lectures, using the relevant academic literature to support the points that you make in your essay.
All sources and images must be properly referenced using Bangor Harvard referencing guidelines.
