Forum Question: During this course we will be exploring many facets of Anthropology. I think it is important to remember those early practitioners of the field who really are responsible for guiding and shaping anthropology into the science it is today.  Anthropology has always been about understanding how humans live. Bronislaw Malinowski was considered a master of the skill of living with a group and observing how they respond to the world around them. He virtually created the field of ethnography and felt that the only real way to learn about a society is to be a participant observer.  Why would direct contact be such a useful vehicle for gaining information about a society? What ethics might be involved in conducting research with religious groups and/or of religious practices? Could the presence of an observer in the group affect the observations being made?

Forum Question:  Watch Dr. Boroditsky’s talk about language and thought.  Some researchers have suggested that a person’s language determines what he or she can and cannot think. This is called linguistic determinism or the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Another position says that language influences, but does not determine, what individuals can think. A third position is that language does not influence ones’ thoughts at all.  Which position is best supported by the evidence presented in Dr. Boroditsky’s talk and our course materials?  Does your opinion or personal experience fit with the science?  Why or why not?

Week 4 literature –  Write 1 Paragraph about something you read from the following excerpts. These are relatively short reads and not too heavy on the theoretical stuff.

This weeks literature is centered movements from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Week 4 film – Write 1 Paragraph about something you saw in the film.

This weeks film is a behind the scenes look at the founding of Death Row records in the early 1990s. It focuses on stories with the record label and is a documentary-style movie that features artists and practitioners from the era.

Week 4 listening –  Write 1 Paragraph about something you heard or watched from these playlists. Try and listen to each year and briefly discuss some things you notice 1) about one specific video  or song and 2) any change over time you notice in sounds and aesthetics.

Dashboard Requirements:
Create one dashboard with the following:
    At least three panes in one dashboard.
    At least three different visualization types in the dashboard. (e.g. bar chart, scatterplot, map, etc.)
    Each visualization should illustrate different relationships (e.g., don’t just make a pie chart and a bar chart from the same data).
    One pane should interactively drive all of the others (see hints below).

Students will be researching a peer-reviewed journal article relating to business communications and preparing a Power Point presentation.  The selected article must be a minimum of 15 pages and printed within the past four years.  If students are not familiar with the CBU library and the proper procedures on how to locate a peer-reviewed article, they should contact the either the librarian or their professor for assistance.

In regards to the Power Point slides, each presentation must follow the guidelines offered in the CBU APA Manual (located in the Course Information folder).  Students are encouraged to use their creativity with professional slide animation and transitions.

Guidelines:

-Presentation must have at least 10 slides
-Title and reference slides are not included in slide total
-You are to summarize the article by providing the following information:
    -Author’s name and background – this may require additional research (i.e., education, career)
    -Purpose of the article (summary of what this article is about)
    -Significant lessons learned (summary of what you learned or found interesting)

Synopsis
Mark Swann, the director of human resources at General Appliances, needs to develop a recruiting strategy due to the growth of the company, as well as the impending retirement of a large portion of its aging workforce. Swann is particularly concerned about recruiting assembly line employees. He has hired you as a consultant to assist him in formulating a plan.

Requirements – Your report for the case study must include the following sections:
1. Cover Page
2. Overview Summarize the case scenario (one paragraph)
3. Discussion Questions Answer the discussion questions listed below
4. Conclusion Briefly reflect your thoughts and opinions based on the case (one paragraph)
5. Reference Page

In addition to the information in the case study itself, students should utilize a minimum of three sources, which can include the textbook and/or any recommended supplemental material, in order to complete this assignment.  These sources must be credible and scholarly (i.e., no unvetted blog posts or use of Wikipedia).  Industry organizations such as SHRM, as well as publications such as the Harvard Business Review and other peer-reviewed journals, are all good examples of credible sources. Remember to use parenthetical in-text citations in APA format throughout your paper to indicate the source of your information.

Discussion Questions

1. The job satisfaction rate at General Appliances is much higher than the national average. What role does this culture play at the company, and how might it be an advantage during the recruitment process?

Format
All papers must be completed in APA format.  This assignment should be between 2-3 pages in length (the cover page and reference page do not count towards this minimum), and must be typed using Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, and with one-inch margins. Papers should also be spell-checked and grammar-checked.
An abstract is not required, and will not count towards the 2-3 page length requirement if included.  It is preferred that students not copy and paste the discussion questions into their papers; if the questions are included, they will not count towards the page requirement minimum.

The website should include the following:

1.    A summary of the chosen culture including a short history.

2.    A brief explanation of some beliefs and traditions of the culture.

3.    Description of the instruments used in that cultures music.

4.    Explanation of the key attributes of the cultures music, including melody, harmony, timbre, texture, rhythm and form.

5.    Specific introduction to one piece of music from the culture. Include at least one example of the music, such as through linking to YouTube performances. Be sure to include a description of the musical example.

The above elements can either be included on one page of your website or separated into different pages.

Include your name on your website. Your website should include photos and video (either linked or embedded). Embedded photos and videos need to be cited.

Your choice of world music must be a style of traditional music that is non-Western or not from the Western tradition of music, therefore avoid choosing styles of music from the U.S., Canada, or Europe, including Jazz or any type of pop music (including hip hop). For example, a pop or rock band from Europe or Japan would not be appropriate for this assignment. Celtic or Irish music are also not appropriate styles of music because these are European styles of music. Also, because most students are already familiar with Reggae music, do not choose Reggae for your topic.

There are hundreds of styles of music from each continent that are not covered in the course materials. For example, Dagomban and Ewe music is covered in the Africa section of our e-text. This music is from Ghana, but there are other tribes in Ghana, who have a unique style of music. Another example is Southeast Asia. Javanese and Balinese music is in the course reading, but there are many Southeast Asian countries and cultures that are not addressed in the course materials. If you are not sure if your chosen topic is a style of non-Western music, contact your instructor, who will provide guidance on your topic selection.

Sources must be valid, academic sources (i.e. Please do not use non-academic websites, such as Wikipedia or About.com). Your website should not contain more than 15% direct quotes and direct quotes must be in quotation marks. Direct quotes and paraphrased material must be cited in the body of the text and in a reference section.
