Assignment: Preparing a Professional Development Plan

A construction crew does not begin to build a new house without the architects blueprint. Though issues may arise during construction that require changes to the blueprint, a blueprint serves as the necessary plan for construction and helps the crew visualize and track the impact of any changes.

Most business initiatives begin with some sort of plan, though type and quality vary. As a business professional, you may have heard of the value of strategic planning and may have even been part of a strategic planning process. Yet, many independent scholars begin a doctoral program without a clear vision or plan for achieving their goals.

Detailing your goals and developing a plan in writing provides you with a document to which you can refer in order to maintain your focus. Having a plan in place will help you visualize the impact of challenges and opportunities that arise so that you can make changes to your plans and goals as often as necessary to ensure your personal and professional satisfaction and success.

To prepare for this Assignment, consider the personal SWOT analysis you completed and the goals you developed in Week 1. Reflect upon your experiences so far in this program and any insights you have gained since you created those goals. In addition, review your PLN plan from Week 4 and the results of The New Drivers of Leadership Self-Assessment that you completed this week. Finally, return to the interactive media Voices of DBA Students. This time, focus on the independent scholars descriptions of their goals, their plans, and the challenges they faced in achieving their goals. You will use the Professional Development Plan template to complete this Assignment.

By Day 7
Submit a 5- to 7-page (excluding a title page and References section) Professional Development Plan (PDP). In your Plan, do the following:

Further develop the goals you crafted in Week 1 of this course. Each goals narrative must incorporate the following:
A statement of your goal
An explanation of your motivation for wanting to achieve the goal and how it relates to your personal values
A brief description of the steps you intend to take to accomplish your goal, including any relevant tools, strategies, or resources
An explanation of how you plan to use technology and/or social media to promote completion of your goal
An explanation of how these steps reflect consideration of personal strengths and weaknesses relevant to the goal
A timeline for completion of your goal
Use your SWOT analysis, PLN, and The New Drivers of Leadership Self-Assessment results as guides to ensure alignment.
Include appropriate references cited in accordance with appropriate APA formatting. Your References section must include a minimum of five APA-formatted, scholarly citations. Your resources must include the following:
Two to three readings (e.g., book, periodical, journal, etc.)
At least two forms of technology and/or social media sites that will contribute to the formation of your own PDP
At least one other resource (e.g., SWOT analysis, The New Drivers of Leadership Self-Assessment results, and/or your Personal Learning Network [PLN] plan)
Be sure to use the Professional Development Plan Template, located in this weeks Learning Resources, to complete this Assignment. Also, refer to the Week 5 Assignment Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this rubric to assess your work. Please Note: You must include a minimum of five APA-formatted, scholarly citations for this Assignment.

Discussion: Leadership Style and Constructive Feedback
All of us by nature easily fall in love with our own ideas, our own words. Excellence is born of intelligent criticism. And maturity is the product of the self-confidence that seeks, accepts and benefits from criticism.
William Marsteller, Creative Management: A Euphemism for Common Sense

Regardless of your professional status, effective communicationparticularly the giving and receiving of effective feedbackis vital for the achievement of your goals. Whether your feedback is meant to inspire, motivate, resolve an issue, congratulate, or reprimand, you can achieve positive outcomes given the right delivery. Even in circumstances when you need to deliver difficult constructive feedback to someone, good communication skills can facilitate the recipients willing acceptance of your message. Giving and receiving constructive feedback is the norm throughout this doctoral program. For some doctoral scholars, it is second nature to give and receive constructive feedback, while others struggle for various reasons. You are gaining experience with this process during each weekly Discussion and, in some instances, your feedback experience is unique, such as in the Pretend You Are the Instructor Discussion you completed. Nevertheless, there are countless individuals who will provide you with feedback and many to whom you will give feedback. Developing the tactful skills of communication often takes practice, and understanding your personal leadership style is helpful.

This week you will assess your leadership style, and you will give and receive constructive feedback during your Discussion concerning the outcomes of your assessment. Additionally, you will construct your Personal Development Plan as a guide for your success.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the materials in the Learning Resources and complete The New Drivers of Leadership Self-Assessment, adapted from Casse (2014).

By Day 3
Post an assessment of your results. In your assessment, do the following:

Summarize your findings, including your scores for each Driver (energy, focus, speed, and challenge).
Evaluate the validity of this assessment, including whether you agree or disagree with the scores.
Explain how self-assessments such as the one you completed can help you know [yourself] in terms of strengths and weaknesses (Casse, 2014, p. 30).
Delineate the measures you will take to improve your leadership competencies.
Refer to the Week 5 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this rubric to assess your work.

Read a selection of your colleagues responses.

By Day 5
Respond to at least two of your colleagues postings as follows:

Provide constructive feedback on your colleagues assessment by addressing the following questions:
In what ways has your colleague provided a thorough self-assessment based on the outcome?
In what ways could your colleague provide stronger evidence for or against the validity of his or her scores?
Based on your colleagues self-assessment, what are some additional, specific suggestions you have for enhancing his or her leadership competencies?
In your response, consider both the content and clarity of writing. To support your assertions, provide appropriately cited references, either from this weeks Learning Resources or from your own research. Remember to balance positive feedback with constructive criticism where appropriate.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what insights you gained as a result of reading the comments your colleagues made.

Assignment: The Power of Connection: Building a Personal Learning Network
Relationships are all there is. Everything in the universe only exists because it is in relationship to everything else. Nothing exists in isolation. We have to stop pretending we are individuals who can go it alone.
Margaret Wheatley, Turning to One Another: Simple Conversations to Restore Hope to the Future

The rise of social media and its power to instantaneously connect people to others is a testament to just how interconnected the world has become. Social media has become an important way to form and maintain relationships. Many people use social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to keep in touch with family, friends, and colleagues. Businesses search for new ways to connect with current and future customers. How many people, however, have recognized the potential of social media as a powerful learning tool?

Forward-thinking educators have begun purposefully building online social networks, known as Personal Learning Networks (PLN)s, of colleagues and experts in the field. Rather than see social networks as an annoyance or way of wasting time, these educators have made them an invaluable means of personal and professional growth. Business professionals can benefit from following their lead. Creating a PLN often is a guide for professionals and committed lifelong learners to help build relationships with others from all over the world. With careful work and commitment to building and maintaining a PLN, the possibilities for connection are endless.

To prepare for this Assignment, review the materials in the Learning Resources and consider novel ways in which you might use technology to foster new connections and seek information and advice.

By Day 7
Submit a 3- to 5-page paper in which you create the plan for your PLN. Your paper should include the following:

A description of what networks and tools you will use to create your PLN, including a brief rationale for each
Information you will present in your professional profile (which may be placed on one or more social media platforms), including specific text you will use to identify yourself and your interests for those who might be interested in following you or joining your PLN
A categorized, annotated list of at least 5 people or groups that you might add to your PLN (through their Twitter feed, blog, LinkedIn page, etc.), including the following for each person or group:
A brief (12 paragraphs) rationale for why you would include the person or group in your PLN
A brief (1 paragraph) description of the process by which you found the person or group you added to your PLN, e.g., by browsing a groups Twitter feed and then deciding to add it to your own PLN, by locating another person the groups feed follows, by finding a group on Facebook and deciding to send a friend request to an individual within that group, etc.
Support your work with a minimum of two specific citations per page from this weeks Learning Resources and/or additional scholarly sources.
Be sure to use the APA Course Paper Template (6th Ed.) to complete this Assignment. Also, refer to the Week 4 Assignment Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this rubric to assess your work. Please Note: For each page of your paper, you must include a minimum of two APA-formatted scholarly citations.

Communities are, in essence, places where members are bonded to one another by mutual commitments and special relationships, where they share a set of ideas and values that they feel compelled to follow.
Thomas Sergiovanni, Small Schools, Great Expectations

From the time they are born, people learn from otherslong before they are aware of it. In many cultures, small family units gradually widen into larger communities, including communities of formal education that include teachers and independent scholars. In addition, within these larger communities, people often join smaller communities, such as sports teams, organizations, and informal friendship groups. As people progress through higher education, they make additional conscious choices about the communities of which they become a part, including those specifically geared toward learning and growth.

As a DBA independent scholar at Walden, you are not alone. You have made a conscious, self-directed decision to become part of the Walden learning community. Of course, at times it may be tempting, as you sit at your computer, to think of your pursuit of your degree as a solitary effort. It will take conscious commitment to engage as an active member who both learns from and contributes to a learning community.

As you watch and listen to others talk about the experience of being part of the Walden learning community and attending residency, reflect on the opportunities and responsibilities that exist for you. Consider your support strategy as you prepare your analysis.

To prepare for this Discussion, review this weeks readings and view the media Being Part of a Learning Community and Attending Residency. Also, listen to the insights offered by Walden DBA independent scholars in the interactive media piece Voices of DBA Students. Focus on the students explanations of what it means to be a part of the Walden learning community and their descriptions of their residency experience. Consider the weeks literature, along with your SWOT analysis, and assess your support needs.

By Day 3
Post an analysis of your role in your new learning community, including the support you require to complete your doctoral degree. In your analysis, be sure to do the following:

Detail the steps you will take to establish your role in your new learning community.
Categorize by your goals the individuals that are or will become members of your learning community.
Assess how these individuals will support you in achieving your goals.
Evaluate when and how you will reach out to your learning community to share your goals and needs.
Identify challenges to building your learning community.
Analyze your goals for residencyin particular, what you hope to contribute and what you hope to gain from spending time with others in your learning community.
Be sure to support your work with a minimum of two specific citations from this weeks Learning Resources and one or more additional scholarly sources.

Refer to the Week 4 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this rubric to assess your work.

Read a selection of your colleagues postings.

By Day 5
Respond to at least two of your colleagues postings in one of the following ways:

Propose how you might support your colleague in meeting his or her goals for being part of the learning community and residency.
Provide an analysis of how your colleagues views of his or her role in the learning community resonate with your own.
Offer suggestions to minimize challenges when building a learning community.
Please note that, for each response, you must include a minimum of one appropriately cited scholarly reference.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what insights you gained as a result of reading the comments your colleagues made.

Assignment: Global Crisis ManagementA Case Study
Product recalls have become increasingly commonplace. In fact, American media reports often contain information concerning product recalls of everything from food products to toys and cars. These recalls are also increasing in global frequency in recent years. A product-harm crisis, which often necessitates a product recall, can have tremendous human and financial costs. No industry or brandno matter how large or well knownis immune to the impact of such a crisis, as proven by Toyota. Toyotas leadership team dealt with a massive recall effort. This recall, among other recalls, is indicative of the importance of company safety strategies (Rajasekera, 2013). Even though many leaders hope to eliminate or at least minimize product-harm crises, given recent trends and the high-stakes consequences, business leaders are interested in knowing what to expect in case of a product-harm crisisparticularly in consumer and stock market reactions. Researchers continue to study what factors influence those reactions and hope to use their findings to build viable product-harm crisis response strategies.

Despite Toyotas historic brand reputation of quality and the trust consumers had in the Toyota products, the recall caused many to question how the company will remain competitive. Toyotas leaders faced challenges because over 6 million vehicles were recalled for safety defects, requiring Toyota to rethink their strategies to regain their position in the automobile industry and avoid destroying their customers loyalty and stakeholders confidence in their products and return on investments.

You will examine Toyotas real-life case and develop recommendations that would help Toyotas global leaders recover their brand loyalty.

To prepare for this Assignment, read the case, Challenges to Toyota Caused by Recall Problems, Social Networks, and Digitisation.

By Day 7
Submit a 3- to 5-page scholarly analysis in which you do the following:

Evaluate the definition of product-harm crisis within the context of the Toyota case study.
Identify the problems the Toyota leaders must solve.
Analyze the organizational changes that were successful and unsuccessful.
Synthesize your analysis of the literature to develop one or more recommendations for strategies Toyota might used to manage this product-harm crisis and recover brand loyalty in the global market.
Support your work with a minimum of two specific citations per page from this weeks Learning Resources and/or additional scholarly sources.
Be sure to use the APA Course Paper Template (6th Ed.) to complete this Assignment. Also, refer to the Week 3 Assignment Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this rubric to assess your work. Please Note: For each page of your paper, you must include a minimum of two APA-formatted scholarly citations.

NOTE!! The MBTI score combination to be used is ISTJ. This is to be written in 1st person form pertaining to business with some personal references if desired. Use headings for each part. Use in-text citations only of provided attachments; no reference page. Resources are attached.

The purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and
useful in people’s lives. The essence of the theory is that much seemingly random variation in the behavior is quite orderly and consistent in the way individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment. However, the random variations can cause conflicts, and understanding them helps improve our ability to work with coworkers, managers and even our friends and family. Based upon your in-class results of the Myers-Briggs
self-exam tiled: Management Styles (textbook pp. 109-111), find your Purdue University results located under course resources tab in Blackboard, course resources, doc sharing. Then, click on your MBTI PDF type (ISFJ, ESTP etc.). Then, read your MBTI type in that document, and the MBTI handouts provided in class. Written parts include (page numbers are approximating): Written in first person complete all parts: (Use if I)

Part One: 1 2 pages: List and discuss all 4 of your MBTI letters combinations (each letter separately) . For example, my overall MBTI score is ESFJ. I agree that I am an extrovert because…. I disagree because… I also agree with my Sensing score because… There should be 4 short paragraphs for part one that give examples to support your conclusions.

Part Two: 1-page: In two to three paragraphs, discuss two areas that you learned about yourself and what could you learn about your peers who have different MBTI scores.

Part Three: 1 to 2 pages: Use the MBTI Purdue Result Headings (attached) of: 1) Personality, 2) career, 3) home (optional) and, 4) midlife (one paragraph for each). Do not discuss matters of sexual relationships, etc. The key here is to perform a self-assessment based upon what you read and whether you agree or disagree and why. Keep this business relationship focused but keep in mind, that sometimes your personal relationships transfer into business relationships. Give examples, state what you learned.

Part Four: 1 page: Self-assessment: Using the handouts/resources, STRESS handout, and course text, discuss how you might use your MBTI results to have a better interpersonal relationship with people in an organization. This part must be 2 pages of written work. You have learned about possible conflicts with other MBIT types in class,
which should have you thinking about how your personality differs from others, so give examples, and dont forget to look under the Emotional Intelligence Tips handout and the MBTI Power Point for help. Using and citing both the handouts, Power Point and textbook will ensure a good grade, as it demonstrates you are making a connection to the resources and your thoughts on how to improve.
