Submit: Annotation of a Qualitative Research Article

This week, you will submit the annotation of a qualitative research article on a topic of your interest. Narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, and phenomenology are examples of types of research designs or approaches used in qualitative research.

An annotation consists of three separate paragraphs that cover three respective components: summary, analysis, and application. These three components convey the relevance and value of the source. As such, an annotation demonstrates your critical thinking about, and authority on, the source topic. This weeks annotation is a precursor to the annotated bibliography assignment due in Week 10.

An annotated bibliography is a document containing selected sources accompanied by a respective annotation of each source. In preparation for your own future research, an annotated bibliography provides a background for understanding a portion of the existing literature on a particular topic. It is also a useful first step in gathering sources in preparation for writing a subsequent literature review as part of a dissertation.

Please review the assignment instructions below and click on the underlined words for information about how to craft each component of an annotation.

It is recommended that you use the grading rubric as a self-evaluation tool before submitting your assignment.

  1. Use the Walden library database to search for a qualitative research article from a peer-reviewed journal on a topic of your interest.
  2. Before you read the full article and begin your annotation, locate the methodology section in the article to be sure that the article describes a qualitative study. Confirm that one of the types of qualitative research designs or approaches, such as narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, or phenomenology, was used in the study.
  3. Annotate one qualitative research article from a peer-reviewed journal on a topic of your interest.
  4. Provide the reference list entry for this article in APA Style followed by a three-paragraph annotation that includes:
    • A summary
    • An analysis
    • An application as illustrated in this example
    • Format your annotation in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced. A separate References list page is not needed for this assignment.

Write a 1- to 2-page summary paper that addresses the following:

Briefly summarize the patient case study you were assigned, including each of the three decisions you took for the patient presented.

Based on the decisions you recommended for the patient case study, explain whether you believe the decisions provided were supported by the evidence-based literature. Be specific and provide examples. Be sure to support your response with evidence and references from outside resources.

What were you hoping to achieve with the decisions you recommended for the patient case study you were assigned? Support your response with evidence and references from outside resources.

Explain any difference between what you expected to achieve with each of the decisions and the results of the decision in the exercise. Describe whether they were different. Be specific and provide examples.

Stanford University medical researchers conducted a study on the correlation between the use of fertility drugs and ovarian cancer.  Their study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, concludes that the use of the fertility drugs, Pergonal and Serophene, may increase the risk of ovarian cancer by three times.  The lead author of the studies, Professor Alice Whittemore, stated, “Our finding in regard to fertility drugs is by no means certain.  It is based on very small numbers and is really very tenuous.”

FDA Commissioner David Kessler would like the infertility drug manufacturers to disclose the study findings and offer a warning on the drug packages.  He notes, “Even though the epidemiology study is still preliminary, women have a right to know what is known.  We’re not looking to make more of this than there is.”

If you were a manufacturer of one of the drugs, would you voluntarily disclose the study information? Why or why not?

Module 2 Assessment
Sociological Perspective on Aging

A sociological perspective on aging highlights the role that social structure plays in shaping the choices and experiences of aging individuals. That is, sociologists recognize that while we are acting, feeling, reasoning beings that attach meaning to our behaviour, there are also important structural forces that influence our choices and experiences. For example, an individuals choice to dye their greying hair may be influenced by the powerful forces of the media and cultural expectations of aging. Similarly, an older persons choice to participate in community events may depend on their access to economic resources and transportation. Taking a sociological perspective, then, involves realizing that age-related experiences are more than private, personal issues. Choices and experiences of the elderly also depend on the ways in which our society is organized at a given history, including its distribution of wealth, political and economic system, cultural patterns, dominant social roles, and power relationships between groups (Funk, 2016, p.3).

Learning Objectives:
Identify social structures in the social world that may influence aging individuals.
Discuss how social structures can be used to explain individual choices and experiences of the elderly.

Instructions:

Write a 1 1 page response (not including title page and reference page) to the following question:

How does social structure influence the choices and experiences of aging individuals?

You must identify two social structures from the social world and discuss how they may influence choices and experiences of aging individuals.

Social structures include such concepts as social stratification, inequality, social institutions (such as political, economic, education, health and family systems), cultural patterns, roles and status to name a few.

Your paper should include the following paragraphs:

Introduction
Introduce the social structures you will discuss.
What is the relevance of focusing on how we organize our society to studying the aging population?
Body
What is meant by the term social structure?
Identify 2 social structures that shape the lives of older individuals.
Define each of the 2 social structures using sources from course material.
Discuss how the structures influence the choices and experiences of aging.
Provide support for your discussion by referring to textbook and additional course material.
Conclusion
    Briefly summarize the main points.
What are the implications of explaining age-related issues by looking at social structures?

To help you respond to the question above, please refer to Required Readings for this module:
A.    Textbook Reading: Chapter 1 “Choices and Constraints in Aging: Theoretical Approaches and Sociological Contributions” (Funk, 2016)
B.    Social Structures, Social Inequality, and the Life Course: Wister, Andrew V. (2019). Social structures, Social Inequality, and the Life Course. In Aging as a social process: Canada and Beyond, Seventh Edition (p. 166-178). Don Mills, Ontario: Oxford University Press. (pdf document on D2L)

Guidelines:
Responses to the question should not exceed 1 pages in length (not including title and reference page).
APA formatting, citing, and referencing guidelines must be followed.
Assessments missing a reference list or in-text citations will not be graded. All assignments will be checked to ensure academic honesty.
Create a MS Word Document (.doc or .docx) and upload to the Module 2 Assessment dropbox in D2L by the due date. Assignments submitted late will be subject to a five percent reduction of the total grade for every day past the due date, including weekends (e.g., if the assignment is three days late, 3 X 5% = 15% will be deducted resulting in a maximum letter grade of A). Assignments more than seven calendar days past the due date, without written approval for extension, will receive a grade of zero (0).

How did the cyberattack impact data loss, financial loss, cleanup cost, and the loss of reputation?
If you were the manager of this company, what are some key steps you would have taken to prevent cyberattacks and enhance cyber security?
Recommend information that should be in the cloud and describe which information should not be in the cloud. Be sure to include in your recommendation your thoughts on preventing cyberattacks, addressing security concerns, or strengthening network infrastructure.

In this assignment, you will develop two separate infographics (informative posters) to discuss two separate health issues relevant to the LGBT communities. In each infographic you will discuss:

  • What is the health problem
  • Which group(s) are most likely to be at risk
  • What social/behavioral/health system determinants affect this
  • Identify at least two potential interventions/activities the community, community health agency, community health nurse could offer to prevent and or support this health issue
  • What resistance might be met in implementing the intervention/activity
