There will be two discussion questions listed below. By the due date assigned respond to one of the discussion questions and submit your response to the Discussion Area. Discussion Question 1:

You have just been hired by a company as an economist and strategic planner. Your company has asked you to generate a report explaining the consequences of the market structure in which the company operates. Assume that the market structure is an oligopoly. Explain to management how this structure could influence decision making, especially pricing, output, advertising, and the use of resources in an oligopolistic market, as compared to other market structures. Justify your answer.

Discussion Question 2:

Price discrimination is the practice of charging different customers or groups of customers different prices for the same product.

    Why does price discrimination occur?
    Describe the conditions that must be present for price discrimination to occur.
    Justify your answer.

(1) Email-essay scenario: The data science team you work on Netflix, is interested in using a data analysis technique new to the team/company. You were tasked with gaining a general overview of the technique and writing a medium length email (~3 paragraphs) to summarize your findings. Include:

a description of the technique for a technical audience, you want to give them an introduction to the method that will be a jumping off point for them learning more detail and discussing the method
explain the value of the method
the types of data it can be used for
the method’s limitations
Choosing a technique: Choose a data analysis technique you are interested in learning more about, based on your analytics skill level. For example, if you’ve never done a regression, pick a regression or correlation or something simpler. If you have more analytics experience, use this as an opportunity to learn more about a method you’re interested in or dig deeper into a method from another class. You are welcome to describe how this analysis method could be used for the data / business question from your case study.

Some ideas: regression, cross-validation, filtering (signal processing), deep learning, principal components analysis (PCA), random forests, randomization techniques, support vector machine (SVM)

Select and research any U.S. business. Then, go to – https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook – to research China international expansion of business operations.

Prepare a Word document of the general background information regarding China (e.g., location, size, and brief timeline of the main historical events and relevant exchange rate arrangements of the country, with more emphasis on recent events).

In a minimum of 500 words, be sure to include the following:
1. historical timeline of the countrys background, developments, and significant events;
2. location;
3. size; and
4. other descriptive event information.
