A reading response should accomplish two primary things: first, it should summarize the text and second, it should evaluate that text. All supplemental readings take some sort of stance on a particular political issue or topic. More specifically, they try to explain some sort of political phenomenon. The authors may be right, they may be wrong, they may do a poor job of shedding light on or explaining a political phenomenon, etc. In these reading responses, you will take a position and judge these authors their interpretations the political world.

Examine supply chain management and global supply chain concepts supportive of operations management efforts.
PC-3.2: Interact with others in a professional manner using appropriate communication and presentation skills.

Once, the world seemed smaller, with businesses having scope within their national supply chains. Now, business leaders need to consider the concept of glocalization, a hybrid word of global and local, they need to think globally and act locally. It is important within the context of business, that supply chain management (SCM) supports operations management (OM) efforts.

In the modern world, there really only is the global supply chain, however it can be considered from both general theoretical and applied practical perspectives.

Directions

In this Assessment, you will compose and informative essay in which you specifically address the parts listed below.

Part 1: Examine the supply chain management and global supply chain concepts supportive of operations management efforts. They are as follows:

SCM Theory

Select a part of general SCM Theory to examine more closely. Conduct online research to support your writing with credible sources. In particular, demonstrate your knowledge of how supply chain management supports operations management efforts.

Global SCM Practice

Select a part of the application of Global SCM practice to examine more closely. Conduct online research to support your writing with credible sources. In particular, demonstrate your knowledge of how global supply chain management supports operations management efforts.

Part 2: Close your paper with the following observations from your research:

The importance of professional interaction, communication, and presentation skills within the operations management and SCM environments.

Ensure each topic is covered to appropriate breadth and depth demonstrating knowledge of the module concept.

Minimum Submission Requirements

This Assessment should be a separate Microsoft Word document, preferably in the most current .docx file format.
In addition to the APA 6th edition style title page and reference page; ensure your paper covers the assigned topics, with a focus on quality. The following items provide additional guidance as to writing expectations.
Respond to the questions in a thorough manner, providing specific examples of concepts, topics, definitions, and other elements asked for in the questions. Your paper should be highly organized, logical, and focused.
It must be written in Standard English; demonstrating exceptional content, organization, style, grammar, and mechanics.
Your paper should provide a clearly established sustained viewpoint and purpose.
Your writing should be well ordered, logical, and unified; as well as original and insightful.
Ensure your paper uses APA 6th edition format for content, with properly indented paragraphs, and a minimum of 3-full pages (minimum 750 words) covering the assigned topics to appropriate depth.
A separate page at the end of your research paper should contain a list of references, in APA 6th edition format. Use your textbook, the Library, and the internet for credible research.
Ensure you have at a minimum three quality references supporting your work: defining words, or using dictionaries, wikis, or encyclopedias, does not count as a quality reference, or meet university standards for credible online research.
Be sure to cite both in-text and reference list citations were appropriate and reference all sources. Your sources and content should follow proper APA 6th edition citation style. Review the APA formatting and citation style resources found in the Writing Center. The Writing Center can be found in the Academic Success Center in the Academic Tools area of your course.  (It should include a cover sheet, paper is double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point font, correct citations, Standard English with no spelling or punctuation errors, and correct references at the bottom of the last page.)

1. Choose two topics of your choice to compare and contrast. You are not required to do any research for this essay, so this assignment encourages you to pick topics you know about so that you can use your own knowledge to build the content of the essay. Below, there will be some examples of compare and contrast topics, but you may pick your own. Ask your instructor if you have difficulty in finding topics.

2. When you choose your topics, spend some time brainstorming to find three items you can compare between the two topics. The example here is how in the Unit 5 lecture notes we found the items of Cost, Size and Teachers for our Community College and University essay. Again, the items you choose will be your decision about what you would like your essay to focus on. Use your judgment of what you feel is most important to discuss between the two topics.

3. Decide whether to use the Topic-by-Topic pattern or the Item-by-Item pattern. Either pattern is valid, so use the one you are most comfortable with. When you decide on your pattern, create an Outline as we did in the Unit 5 notes for Community Colleges and Universities.

4. Be sure that your essay has an Introduction that has the four points listed in the lecture notes, not necessarily in the order given in the notes: Topic, Thesis, Attention Grabber, Signposting. (Note, if you decide to write the essay inductively by not having the thesis in the introduction but in the conclusion, that is acceptable, so in place of the thesis in the introduction, you may ask a question and/or explain the purpose of the essay).

5. With your outline, you will write the essay filling in all the details for each point in the outline.

6. Be sure to have a conclusion where you evaluate and analyze the topics. This conclusion could be more than one paragraph, and you will likely develop it after writing all the other points of the essay. Part 3 of the Unit 5 notes show how the essay evaluated and analyzed the two types of schools to question the saying “you get what you pay for.”

7. Include a title for the essay.

8. Read over the essay several times to see if you need to make any revisions. Also, proofread the essay to make corrections. It is a good idea to let at least one other person read your essay for revision and proofreading. Your reader could be a friend or family member, or it could even be someone you connect with in class. It is fine to get together with a classmate to e-mail essays back in forth for proofreading and revision.

The essay needs to be at least two full pages following the MLA formatting guidelines of 1-inch margins, double spacing between lines, Times New Roman 12 type.

Writer’s notebook 3.1

You have just read “Skeptics May Object,” about including opposing viewpoints in your argument.  Now let’s practice doing so.

You should already have chosen your topic and written a working thesis for the upcoming argument essay.   Now, construct a short argument (300 words) that takes the opposite position of your working thesis.  For example, if your working thesis is about banning guns on campus, then in this assignment you should argue the opposite, that guns should be allowed.  So, whatever your thesis is, construct an opposing argument.

The purpose here is to make sure that you understand the opposing viewpoints related to your topic.  Only by understanding and anticipating what skeptics might be thinking can you effectively establish common ground and counter opposing viewpoints.

In approximately 300 words, reflect and respond to Richard Lederer’s “English is a Crazy Language.”   In your response, address one or more of the following questions.

1. Briefly describe the rhetorical situation of the the article.  What do you think is Lederer’s purpose.

2. Some of the “crazy” aspects of English can be explained by the etymology of specific words.    For example, Lederer tells us that “there is no egg in eggplant” and he is right.  However, the name can be explained by conducting a little research.  Early varieties of the eggplant in Europe were not large and purple like the ones we eat today.  Rather,  they were small and white or yellow, like eggs.  Choose one of Lederer’s examples of “crazy” words and briefly research the etymology of that word.

3.  If you speak another language, discuss some of the “crazy” things about that language.

Feel free to discuss other aspects of the article that interest or amuse you.

Writer’s notebook 4.2

Use the following questions to help you formulate a reflection/response to Boroditsky’s article.  Of course, you may also include ideas or concerns that most interest you.

  1. How would you answer the question that Boroditsky poses to her students: which cognitive faculty would you most hate to lose?
  2. Are languages merely tools for expressing thoughts, or do they actually shape our thoughts?  What is your opinion?  Provide some examples from your own experience for support.
  3. Notice how the author includes opposing viewpoints into her essay.  Which opposing viewpoints do you find most convincing?

Look ahead to the instructions for Essay #3, the literary analysis.   For that essay you will be asked to write an analysis of one of the stories included in the short stories folder in this unit.

For this journal assignment I want you to select the story you will use for your final essay and explore potential topics. The first step in approaching a literary analysis is to familiarize yourself with the story.  That means reading it more than once and exploring a variety of possible topics. One way to explore topics is described in your reading from this unit:

After reading your story, a topic may just jump out at you, or you may have recognized a pattern or identified a problem that youd like to think about in more detail. What is a pattern or a problem?

A pattern can be the recurrence of certain kinds of imagery or events. Usually, repetition of particular aspects of a story (similar events in the plot, similar descriptions, even repetition of particular words) tends to render those elements more conspicuous.

A problem, on the other hand, is something in the story that bugs you or that doesnt seem to add up. A character might act in some way thats unaccountable, a narrator may leave out what we think is important information (or may focus on something that seems trivial), or a narrator or character may offer an explanation that doesnt seem to make sense to us. Not all problems lead in interesting directions, but some definitely do and even seem to be important parts of the story. (UNC Writing Center)

Identify at least one pattern or problem with the story you have chosen.  Describe the pattern or problem in detail, using quotations from the story where necessary.  After you have done this, try to make connections between that pattern or problem and the theme of the story.  These ideas may or may not become part of your essay; that’s Ok.  The purpose here is not to write a rough draft, but simply to become more familiar with the story.

This journal entry should be at least 300 words. Click the link above to submit the assignment.

 Writer’s notebook 5.2

You should have already read the instructions for the essay that concludes this Unit.  You also should have already chosen the short story you will write about.  Now it is time to begin conducting research.

For this journal assignment you will create a brief annotated bibliography.  What is an annotated bibliography you ask?

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. (Cornell Library Guides)

Locate at least four secondary sources (sources other than the story itself)  that you intend to use in your upcoming essay, prepare an MLA citation for each and then annotate each entry by explaining how the source is relevant to your essay.  Your research should be guided by the type of analysis you plan to conduct for the essay (i.e. biographical, historical, psychological, etc.). It would be a good idea to review Finding and Evaluating Sources from Unit 3 so that you know how to choose credible sources.

A sample MLA annotated bibliography can be found here:

Each student is responsible for writing 4 short (2 double-spaced pages) response papers that summarize and integrate the readings for one week.
The position papers should be at a minimum, 500 words (double-spaced), 12 point font. Please include your name, student  ID, date, and course number on the top right of the first page. Please write the paper using a standard essay structure with in text citations and a bibliography. Please include a word count.
Response papers might consider the following:

-What is/are the central topic(s) of the papers?

-Why is this issue vital to investigate according to the author?

-What evidence is brought to bear among the papers about the topic/issue/question?

-What are the findings of the studies?

-What parts of the articles did you find persuasive or unpersuasive? Why?

-Did you find some of the individual articles/studies to be better than others? Why?

Please note, the questions above are suggestions. I do not expect you to answer all of these questions for each reading. This would result in a very long response paper

his written assignment should be 4 pages-long, 12-pt-font, 1-inch margin all around, double-spaced. You will be graded based on the articulation of your ideas and analysis!

THIS IS ABOUT YOU! I WANT TO HEAR YOUR VOICES! BE HONEST & TRUTHFUL!

This paper should NOT be a summary of your life but a critical explanation/ analysis/ assessment of meaning of your racial/ethnic identity in the context of your presence in the U.S.

This identity paper is about developing an introspective analysis of who you are and how you have become yourself. More precisely, I want you to think critically and reflect on the process by which you have developed your identity. There is NO RIGHT or WRONG! Knowing that race, ethnicity and other identification markers are socially defined, what are the meanings associated with who you are, about what you are trying to achieve and the struggles you face everyday?

This week in class we reviewed how companies track and visuals key metrics and KPIs. For projects in which metrics can be measured in an automated fashion, these may be visualized with constantly updated Dashboards. (e.g. Netflix viewing data). For projects in which metrics cannot be calculated in an automated manner, and/or are only calculated quarterly/yearly, an Outcome Report may be produced. Based on this week’s email-essay and your knowledge of the Salesforce or Netflix case, use Tableau to mock up Dashboards or an Outcome Report using simulated data.

(1) Simulated data. Do not go looking for data. You are making your own!

I want you to simulate 2 KPIs for your case over some period of time. See Simulating Data section above for tutorial video and example code.

For a Dashboard, you’d probably have the numbers by the minute to daily. For an Outcome Report, you’ll probably simulate values on a daily, monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis.
Make realistic simulated data. I don’t need you to get the numbers precisely right, but I’d like to see them within an order of magnitude of reality and the variation in the numbers to make sense (e.g. if you think the trend of your KPI will be increasing, make sure the trend of your KPI is increasing)
(2) Create a Dashboard or Outcome Report for the KPIs in Tableau

Using what you learned from the visualization material this week, create a Dashboard or Outcome Report in Tableau for the data. See Simulating Data section above for tutorial video that includes using Tableau.

The purpose of these graphs is to allow the viewer to quickly assess the outcomes (as far as KPIs) for the project. Make the graphs easy to interpret – use legends, plot in an easy to read way, etc
Make minimum 2 graphs in Tableau (min one for each KPI)
Submission

For this assignment, please take screenshots or make a PDF of your Tableau visualizations. Your submission can be in PDF or PPT(X) format. You may also include the link to your Tableau project. You will describe and explain your Outcome Report or Dashboard in part (3), which will be a separate submission. (I will grade them next to each other, though.) I don’t need to see your code/Excel notebook/etc.

(3) Dashboard or Outcome Report – Describe and explain

In place of a short answer this week, I want you to describe an explain your Dashboard or Outcome Report mock-ups. Please include:

Definitions of the KPIs/metrics you included in your mock-ups
Why you included each KPI/metric
Why a metric was relevant to one or both teams
Why you choose to display the metric in the way you choose
Other requirements:

Use in line citations where appropriate
Include a reference list/bibliography as appropriate
Minimum 300 words

Length: Minimum of 600 words

Total points: 250 points

Due date: Sunday, February 9, 2020

Miami Florida is considered ground zero for climate change (), in particular rising seas will not only drown coastal sections of the city but will disrupt our local supply of drinking water.

Based on what you have learned so far from this class, discuss the following:

  • Explain where the drinking water from South Florida primarily comes from and why would rising sea levels disrupt this supply?
  • What efforts can be made and are being made to mitigate the effects of rising seas on our drinking water?
  • If you were a local politician, what advice would you give to state and federal officials on the best way to ensure residents in South Florida had a steady supply of drinking water for many years to come?
