Assignment 2: Case Study #2

Overview

As you continue to practice the psychological concepts youre learning in this course, youre honing the problem solving and self and social awareness skills that will help you navigate social situations in your life and career. Youre discovering how to apply these skills to understand the behaviors of others, improve your relationships, and make informed decisions based on reliable information.

And no matter what kind of situation you encounter at school, home, or work, youre learning how to recognize and manage your emotions so they dont get the best of you!

Now, its time to practice the skills and concepts to help your friend Gloria navigate a difficult workplace situation.

Case Study and Questions

Gloria and Lakeisha are co-workers who are assigned to work on a project together. Lakeisha is very organized and wants them to do really well on this project. To help them get started, Lakeisha took some initiative and prepared a list of to-do items along with due dates. She even color-coded the list to indicate which partner will do each item and sends an email to Gloria with the to-do list. Lakeisha wants her partner to know that shes serious about their success.

Gloria is happy her teammate has shown initiative but is surprised by Lakeishas to-do list and feels a bit uncomfortable because she feels like Lakeisha is micromanaging her. Gloria wants to do her part on the project but is feeling anxious because she doesnt know where she fits in, and it is making her worried about working on this project. She wonders how she can succeed on this project if Lakeisha is already the leader. When working for a previous employer, Gloria felt anxious about her ability to successfully complete a project and attempted to communicate her feelings with a co-worker; however, her co-worker didnt seem to understand Glorias concerns and said that she should just ignore her feelings and get the work done.

As Gloria ponders having a conversation with Lakeisha, she starts to feel overwhelmed and thinks it might just be easier to be removed from the project. Using your problem solving and self and social awareness skills and what you have learned about personality traits and emotions, answer the questions below to help Gloria calm her anxiety and find a solution to her problem:

1. From Chapter 3 in the webtext, what did you learn about the big 5 personality traits?

2. Consider Gloria and Lakeishas different approaches to the project. On which one of the Big 5 personality traits do they most differ? How do they differ?

3. Chapter 6 in the webtext focused on emotions. Using what you learned, give advice to Gloria on how she can identify and regulate her own emotions so that she can stick with this project, and be successful.

4. If you were in this situation, how confident are you that you could successfully resolve a workplace conflict like the one that Gloria faced? What past experiences or knowledge influence your answer

2 PYRAMIDS AND A CONE

EXERCISE 1: MASLOWS HIERARCHY OF HUMAN NEEDS

View the 3 video clips below:
Creation of Wilson the Volleyball
I Made Fire
I’m Sorry Wilson
Discussion: In the movie, Castaway, the protagonist, Chuck Noland, played by Tom Hanks, is aboard an airplane that crashes into the ocean during a storm, and he is immediately confronted by his own human needs.  He needs to escape the sinking plane and swim to the surface.  Chuck needs to find land.  When he does make it to an island, he gathers food and water, finds a place to sleep and makes fire.  He is very pleased with himself for making fire with elemental materials and without any help.  He examines the resources around him which include the airplane cargo that has washed ashore.  Among these are ice skates and a packaged Wilson brand volleyball.  In the process of making fire, he injures his hand, and discovers that when he grabs the volleyball with his bleeding hand, it leaves a rough image of a face on the ball, and he continues to decorate it.  He names it Wilson after the brand name on the packaging, and it becomes his companion.  Chuck talks to Wilson, appears to listen to Wilson, and at the end, when Wilson falls overboard in rough seas, he cries out and apologizes to Wilson for leaving him behind.  Chuck uses the ice skates as a cutting tool and even extracts one of his own very painfully infected teeth with an ice skate.  Near the end of his time on the island, we find out that he had been planning to hang himself if his loneliness ever overwhelmed him.
Chuck spends several years alone on the island, but finally decides he must try to make it back to civilization.

With his Hierarchy of Human Needs, Abraham Maslow was telling us that certain human needs take priority over others and that we must achieve the base (bottom) needs before we can attend to the higher needs.  Where do you see the behaviors of the castaway as they indicate the various human needs?  See if you can find 1 or 2 examples of how he addresses or attains each need in the Castaway story.  One example has been done for you:

EXAMPLES (FROM THE STORY) OF THE ATTAINMENT OF HUMAN NEEDS
Self-Actualization: _________________________________________________________________
Esteem:  _________________________________________________________________________
Belongingness: ____________________________________________________________________
Safety: __________________________________________________________________________
Physiological: Air – Escape the sinking plane, and ___________________________________
In one brief paragraph, tell us how you interpret or understand the characters creation of Wilson and his reaction when Wilson falls overboard?

EXERCISE 2: BLOOMS TAXONOMY (Modified) 6 LEVELS OF COGNITION

For further information, please visit this link from the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching: https://cft.vanderbilt.edu/guides-sub-pages/blooms-taxonomy/
Just as Maslow believed that his pyramid needed a strong and foundation, Bloom places remembering (originally knowledge) at the base of his pyramid, topped by ever higher, yet dependent, levels of cognitive ability and accomplishment.  In the exercise below, there may be more than one correct answer, but try to choose the most correct. Number 3 has been done for you.

MATCH THE LEVEL OF COGNITION WITH EACH OF THE 6 ACHIEVEMENTS PRESENTED:
1.    A student learns the names of the 6 basic nutrients.  _________________
2.    A student assesses the effects of various dietary changes on competitive cross country runners.
_________________
3.    A student is able to distinguish the component parts of a balanced meal and what each component contributes to health.  Analyze (examine component parts to see how they affect the whole)
4.    A student is able to voice a reason for a behavioral prescription in his own words.  _________________
5.    A student is able to construct a model program of behavior change for a previously unaddressed population and behavior  _________________
6.    A student is able to use label-reading skills learned in class when buying food in a store.

EXERCISE 3: DALES CONE OF EXPERIENCE

http://teacherworld.com/potdale.html
Dales cone of experience indicates how much a learner remembers, retains and is able to apply based on the type of educational experience he or she undergoes.  Students learn and retain more as they are more actively involved in the learning process.  Think of an example from your own life where you learned something well because of a high level of participation and involvement in the learning experience and write it in the space provided below.
EXERCISE 4: AUTHENTICITY
The word authentic appears in the University of the State of New York Publication, A Guidance Document for Achieving the New York State Standards in Health Education, which you are now familiar with (if you werent before). Here is the entry:
Authentic: Health education needs to provide real life learning experiences and personal applications of health knowledge and skills in relevant situations. Assessments need to demonstrate the actual personal application of health knowledge and skills through personal wellness plans, logs, reflective journals, demonstrations, simulations, role-plays, community service learning and other tangible products and performances.
Label the following types of assessment as either A for Authentic or T for Traditional:
_____ Multiple choice test
_____ Pretend shopping trip to a real supermarket
_____ Role playing
_____ Keeping a dietary journal
_____ Essay test
_____ Practicing hand washing at a kindergarten sink
_____ Writing a letter to a public official about a dangerous intersection

EXERCISE 5: SYNTHESIS OF LEARNING
You have just completed 4 exercises: Maslows Hierarchy, Blooms Taxonomy, Dales Cone, and Authenticity.  Write a 200 to 300-word double-spaced essay stating how you believe the knowledge gained from each exercise could help you to become a better health educator.  Begin your essay on this page.

Discuss five of the most influential variables in language acquisition and development. Discuss in detail if parents should use baby talk with their children or should they use adult speech. Discuss the affects that baby talk may have on children, discuss if parent should correct their child’s language, why or why not. You may find it necessary to research some scholarly articles and not give opinion.

For this journal entry, you will read and reflect upon “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander in They Say, I Say (Ch. 16). In order to successfully complete this journal entry, you will need to identify the conversation Alexander is participating in about race, criminal justice, and mass incarceration. You should use the templates we have learned about so far in order to help you write a reflective journal entry of 300-500 words based on the questions and assignment criteria below. One way to approach this assignment would be to use and adapt the “Template of Templates” in the Introduction to your textbook.

For your consideration:

What conversation is Alexander participating in? Who is her “They Say” and what does she think about their point(s) of view?
What is the general claim made by Alexander in this essay?
What is the most important critique she offers in her essay?
What do you think about her claims and evidence?
Assignment Grading Criteria

The journal entry reflects critical thinking and the ability to apply concepts from the relevant textbook chapters.
The journal entry illustrates careful reading and college-level comprehension of the assigned text.
The journal entry is well-developed and shows thought and planning.
The journal entry is well-written and organized.

Again, you need to answer any two of the discussion questions below. You can just make one posting. Discussion questions for Module 3:

1. Discuss a scenario in which an organization you know or someone you know (i.e., you can hide yourself or your employer) has ended up with a suboptimal decision because of some of the ten barriers listed in Exhibit 6.2 (plunging in, frame blindness, lack of frame control, etc.).

2. Assess the capacity utilization of a process you know (preferably in the health care industry).

3. Think of a research question that can be solved by collecting relevant data and conducting quantitative analysis in an organization you know. You need to identify the dependent variable and the independent variable(s).

4. Describe a quality/process improvement project that you are familiar with. Discuss the issue that the project aimed to address, the quality/performance before and after the intervention, and lessons learned.

5. The link below provides the quality of care data for all VA Medical Centers (VAMCs).

https://www.va.gov/QUALITYOFCARE/measure-up/Strategic_Analytics_for_Improvement_and_Learning_SAIL.asp (Links to an external site.)

Select a VAMC of interest, identify one quality or efficiency gap (copy and paste the facility name, measure values in the submission), and offer some brief recommendations for improvement.

Of course, you can post questions related to Module 3 here and fellow students and I will help you.

Overview

The purpose of this assignment is to continue your practice with the rhetorical, academic moves you are learning in your textbook, the “They Say, I Say” format, in order to compose a short response to a text. In They Say, I Say, you are learning how to define what others are saying, as well as craft your own response in order to produce academic writing and response. For this essay, you will work on synthesizing your skills in comprehension, analysis, summary/paraphrase/quotation, response, and anticipating objections.

Furthermore, today’s employers place a lot of value on thinking critically, ethical judgment and integrity, intercultural skills, innovation, and a life-long desire to learn. One way to continue to learn outside of school, get exposure to new ideas, and hone your own position is by regularly reading, viewing, and listening to high quality material, as well as discussing it with others. This assignment will allow you to organize your use of the templates in They Say, I Say, as well as show the progress you are making in the acquisition of academic skills and desirable professional qualities.

Academic Values: Critical Thinking, Critical Analysis, Discourse, Claims Based on Evidence, Close Reading, Basic Web Research

Process

For this assignment, you will locate, analyze, and respond to a review or critical viewpoint related to a television show, podcast, movie, album, video game, social media platform, or other cultural product that you enjoy. You should choose an article that reviews or makes a critical argument about the tv show, movie, podcast, album or cultural product. (Here is an example of the type of article you might analyze about Game of Thrones: “Game of Thrones and the Paradox of Female Beauty  (Links to an external site.).) After reading this assignment, you should start looking for an article on the internet that might interest you. Good examples of publications with thoughtful reviews and analysis include The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Atlantic.

In order to respond to the text, you must first read it and comprehend the author(s) viewpoint, position, or argument. The first part of your assignment will therefore be an explanation of the author’s position using summary, paraphrase, and perhaps some quotation. The second part of the assignment will be your response, using the concepts you learned in Chapters 4, 5, and 6 of They Say, I Say. Your essay will start to bring together and synthesize your growing understanding of the templates in They Say, I Say, and the practice with them we have been doing in this course, as well as introduce basic internet research.

Therefore, on this assignment you will be assessed on comprehension, summary, analysis, understanding of the rhetorical situation, and the logic of your own response. You will also begin to use MLA format in order to design your document and cite your source(s) and practice generating an original title for your essay. Remember, you are not expected to know everything there is to know about academic reading, writing, and rhetoric, but to show that you are building the skills necessary for success in academic and professional contexts. The more practice you have, the better you will become!
