Complete a 2-3 page sociological analysis of your name, looking at how your naming may have been impacted by culture, gender, and time period.

Introduction

Sociology is interested in better understanding the social contexts of our social lives. Much of what we experience in life is impacted by the culture in which we live. The ways of life found around the world differ, not only in forms of dress, preferred foods, and musical tastes, but also in family patterns and beliefs about right and wrong. These differences can be attributed to cultureour collective beliefs, values, and objects. While we oftentimes see names as a reflection of who we are as individuals, they are the product of larger social forces. Using your sociological imagination, you can reflect on your name and how it is impacted by culture.

Note: Many resources will be coming from The Society Pages blog. While it is good to question the validity of most blogs, The Society Pages contains blog posts from experts in the field of sociology and thus have higher validity.

Demonstration of Proficiency

    • Examine the role of culture in naming.

Based on what you learned from your research, discuss your own name. How is something as simple as a name shaped by the social world around us? How has your name been impacted by time period, culture, your gender, et cetera? How might your name be different if you had been born one hundred years earlier? Why?

In your first essay you will answer the following question: How did the Twin Towers and Building 7 come down at free-fall speed?  The answer is of course controversial.  Your answer will necessarily be an argument.  But frame it less as provocation than persuasion.  Present your case as if you were a lawyer in court wanting to keep the jury with you.  Do not make them afraid or put them on the defensive.  Begin with what we all agree on.  Lead them by degrees to see the event as you do.
So in your first paragraph revisit the day, honor its victims, and present what the world witnessed.  Represent the tragedy in factual detail: the buildings, the planes, the collapses, and the number of victims.  Bring the event into sharp focus.  End your first paragraph with your modestly presented claim about how the buildings came down so fast.  Do not merely assert.  Give us a strong reason to believe you, a reason your essay will prove.
In your second paragraph, give us background: stipulate in greater detail the height of the buildings, their construction and structure, the times of the crashes, of the collapses, and of associated events.  And consider the physical aftermath at the World Trade Centerthe pulverized debris, the molten metal.
Then, in the body of your essay, make your case.  Set up the body of your essaythe third paragraph onto be sections under a series of headings.  Compose those headings to be a sequence that progresses toward understanding.  Make each heading the signpost to a substantive discussion.  Each heading represents your title to a sub-story of the big story.  Compose the headings to be like chapter titles.  Their sequence, however, will be primarily logical rather than chronological.  Think of the headings as points you need to make to convince the jury.  Play with the sequence until it seems persuasive.  Make each section necessary and substantive.
Close by bringing us into the present.  What is the relevance of September 11, 2001, now, more than eighteen years on?  Why does that date matter?  How is it still in the news, still in our lives?  Do not merely recap and do not use the phrase In conclusion    Instead, give us something new and factual that makes clear the relevance now of what you have proved.

Context:Your organization is evaluating the quality of its call center operations. One of the most important metrics in a call center is Time in Queue (TiQ), which is the time a customer has to wait before he/she is serviced by a Customer Service Representative (CSR). If a customer has to wait for too long, he/she is more likely to get discouraged and hang up. Furthermore, customers who have to wait too long in the queue typically report a negative overall experience with the call. Youve conducted an exhaustive literature review and found that the average TiQ in your industry is 2.5 minutes (150 seconds).

Another important metric is Service Time (ST), also known as Handle Time, which is the time a CSR spends servicing the customer. CSRs with more experience and deeper knowledge tend to resolve customer calls faster. Companies can improve average ST by providing more training to their CSRs or even by channeling calls according to area of expertise. Last month your company had an average ST of approximately 3.5 minutes (210 seconds). In an effort to improve this metric, the company has implemented a new protocol that channels calls to CSRs based on area of expertise. The new protocol (PE) is being tested side-by-side with the traditional (PT) protocol.

Instructions:

Access the file. Each row in the database corresponds to a different call. The column variables are as follows:

  • ProtocolType: indicates protocol type, either PT or PE
  • QueueTime: Time in Queue, in seconds
  • ServiceTime: Service Time, in seconds
  • Perform a test of hypothesis to determine whether the average TiQ is lower than the industry standard of 2.5 minutes (150 seconds). Use a significance level of =0.05.
  • Evaluate if the company should allocate more resources to improve its average TiQ.
  • Perform a test of hypothesis to determine whether the average ST with service protocol PE is lower than with the PT protocol. Use a significance level of =0.05.
  • Assess if the new protocol served its purpose. (Hint: this should be a test of means for 2 independent groups.)
  • Submit your calculations and a 175-word summary of your conclusions.
