The juvenile justice system continues to evolve and separate juveniles from adults. With any evolution, there is always resistance to change, and, some can even say, fear of the unknown. According to Dharmbir Rai Sharma (n.d.), from a psychological perspective there is a kinship between fear and darkness: “Darkness implies ignorance in the sense that we cannot see anything, so we do not know what lies in there. This is perhaps the reason for a very widespread use of the phrase ‘fear of the unknown'” (para. 3).

Resistance comes with hesitancies when it comes to changing the way juveniles are adjudicated, treated, rehabilitated, et cetera. There could be deliberations on their placement (adult prison or juvenile detention facilities), treatment (if they could be rehabilitated), to name a few. There is always controversy over whether or not juveniles should be treated as adults.

For this discussion, read the following case vignette and answer the questions below. Use information from professional sources to support your thinking.

Chris has a significant delinquent history, including theft of property, breaking and entering, possession with intention to distribute, and domestic violence. Chris is 18 and is a few credits shy of obtaining his high school diploma. His probation officer knows that Chris has the potential to do well; however, he is easily influenced by the wrong crowd of delinquent peers/friends. Chris is currently charged with possession of a firearm, and the district attorney wants to charge him as an adult. His probation officer and attorney want him adjudicated as a juvenile and sent to a rehabilitation facility, as rehabilitation has not been a part of his treatment in the past.

What are some conflicts that may occur between law professionals and psychology professionals when it comes to juvenile defendants?
What case would you make for Chris from the point of view of a legal professional, or what case would you make from the point of view of a mental health professional?

Theresa and Mike understand that building the culture they envision requires effective communication, collaboration, and participative problem solving. They envision creating an organization such that Joe and other employees will know exactly what to do when faced with choices that involve ethics. As the first step in embedding clear ethical processes in the organization, they realize they need to devise a code of conduct. Both companies have operated with an unwritten code that was never formalized. The consultant is asked to help them understand the purpose and content of an excellent code of conduct and how they should go about developing it.

Review the scenario for this course, and answer the following questions:

*What is the purpose of a code of conduct?
*Evaluate the code of conduct of Levi Strauss, and describe the ethical principles it includes.
*In your own work experience, have you seen similar ethical principles used in organizations and, if so, which ones?

My topic
Describe the field of forensic psychology.
Explain a course of action for treatment that may be recommended by a forensic psychologist in the selected case study.

Case study I chose:
Jessica is a 17 year old female who has been charged with robbing a local convenience store. Jessica has been arrested twice prior to this arrest for other delinquent behavior (truancy and fighting at school). Jessica has had behavior issues at school and her grades range from D’s to F’s. She misses school often and has been arrested for truancy in the past. Jessica has also been in over 10 fights within the last year at school and has been arrested for assaulting another student with a bat. Jessica has been known to associate with other delinquent peers who have similar histories at school.

This time, upon being arrested, Jessica was taken to adult lock up/jail. Jessica was placed in a holding cell with other adult females while waiting for her hearing and was assaulted (fighting) by a 25 year old female while there. Jessica became very depressed and was referred to a forensic psychologist. After be evaluated, it was determined that Jessica is the oldest child out of seven and that she tries to be the provider for her family as her mother is on drugs and is not around much and her father died when she was 13. Jessica has been in and out of facilities, but has not been to a rehabilitation facility.

For this case, Forensic Psychologists should:

Consider the ethics of the case in general and the unique considerations due to the age and circumstances of the client.
Judge how ethical principles and standards can be applied to address ethical concerns and treatment.
Adhere to the APA Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct to make professional recommendations for the best treatment approach of a juvenile.
Consider what concerns there are for juveniles in adult jails.
Determine if Jessica’s age is sufficient enough criterion for lock up in an adult jail.

2. You will write a paper describing the topics you chose. I’m not overly worried about length, four double-spaced pages is probably enough. I will be looking for in-depth research with thoughtful discussion. I’ll collect a rough draft around week 9 and return it to you with comments. The final draft will be due on finals week.

Note that this is a research paper! You will need to go to the library and use the internet to find sources. Newspaper articles, books, research papers, websites, magazines are all viable sources. A big part of this is learning to use the library resources, so take your time with that. You will need to cite your sources based on a convention. i.e: MLA convention https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/02/ (Links to an external site.)

Find 2 sources that are in favor of using the technology on a large scale and 2 sources that are opposed. For each source:

Summarize the arguments made by the source
Discuss the perspective of the author (what is the question they are addressing, what do they find most important).
What sources or research methods did the author use?
Which of the sources you found is most convincing and why?
