Discussion: Methods
As you build a research article summary in the Discussion, you put together three key points: the studys purpose, the methods, and the findings. If the purpose answers the Why? question (Why was this study conducted?), then the methods answer the How? (How did the researchers conduct the study?).

For this Discussion, you summarize the methods of the sample research study and reflect on the process.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the materials on summarizing and using citations.
Access the research article found in the Learning Resources.
By Day 4
Post your initial 1- to 2-paragraph response that addresses the following:

What was the method(s) used by the authors in the study? Summarize the methods in your own words and include a citation.
Additionally, reflect on the process of summarizing the methods. Pose any questions and/or explain challenges that came up during the process.
By Day 6
Respond to at least two colleagues by doing one of the following:

Give feedback on their summary.
Share insights on summarizing the methods.
Address one of the questions or challenges your colleague posed, based on your experience.
By Day 7

Submit 1 double-spaced page (around 250 words) of the you are working on. Please paste the assignment instructions into your draft so that your instructor understands the purpose of the assignment. Your instructor will provide feedback by Day 6. The feedback will focus on the writing aspects only.

Consider these questions, for the article youve selected:
What is the central topic or set of related topics of your selected article?
What is the central question or set of questions asked by the writer(s) of your selected article?
What is the thesis or central claim of your selected article?
What evidence is used by the author of your selected article to support its thesis or central claim?
Is your selected article convincing? Why?
Is your selected article compelling or interesting? Why?
How does the information contained in your selected article relate to or impact your community (however you define it)?
Craft an essay (four-paragraph minimum) that summarizes the purpose, central claim, and ley evidence as well as analyze the authors biases and assumptions; the  effectiveness of the evidence, organization and conclusions; and, the intended audience of the article youve chosen
The essay should include a minimum of two paraphrases and two quotes from the article youve chosen
Provide a Works Cited or References entry for the article at the end of your post
Respond to two of your peers essays
Make sure to make connections between your responses and their own; your experiences and those revealed in the video; and, the general clarity of the ideas presented

Assignment: Completed Matrix With Narrative
As you complete the work on your matrix, observe how the approaches are similar and different across and down the cells. You will need to draw on those observations as you develop your narrative this week. As you prepare to develop your narrative, it is also important to organize your references so that you can refer back to the original sources. For this Assignment, you will create a brief narrative summarizing what you have learned, citing your sources. This Assignment will be a helpful guide as you read other qualitative studies for your capstone.

To prepare for this Assignment:

Review the work that you have done in the last two weeks, making sure that each cell in the matrix is completed.
Create your reference list, including books and methodological articles on each area. You can use the ones listed in the Learning Resources and search for your own as well.
By Day 5
Write a 2- to 3-page narrative. In your narrative, be sure to respond to the following:

Summarize what you have learned about the similarities and differences among the approaches.
Describe how what youve learned by developing the matrix has allowed you to choose the approach that you plan to use for your research plan in this course.
Identify the approach you intend to use for your research question.
Describe your rationale for your choice of approach.
Submit your Qualitative Research Approaches Matrix Template (which you worked on during Weeks 2 and 3) and your narrative to your Instructor.

Workshop: Qualitative Research Workshop: Week 4
In this weeks Workshop, visit your unique thread and carefully review how your research problem and purpose have evolved and what you have learned about the different approaches.

By Day 3
Post a response to the following prompts:

Present your research question as two or three versions, based on the different approaches you have explored that seem most appropriate to your research problem and purpose.
Make a case for why each approach would work.
Identify the approach you believe best fits your research question. Then, re-formulate the question based on the approach you selected.
Describe how the approach you selected will direct the procedures you will later develop.
Summarize your choice of theoretical framework for your prospectus. Justify how your choice aligns with your current choice of research question and approach. If they are not aligned, choose a more appropriate framework.
Given your choice of approach, describe what data collection tools will be most appropriate to consider. Note: This is not a commitment to use all of the tools you identify; rather, it is meant to be a reflection on what is possible given your choice of approach.
By Day 5
Review two of your classmates responses in their unique threads. Provide feedback on each classmates proposed approach and the formulation of his or her question. Consider these questions as you develop your feedback:

Would you formulate the question another way? If so, why?
What challenges do you foresee in conducting the research using the approach your classmate has chosen? What might she or he do differently?
